Liziwe's Guest House warmly welcomes all guests. Since opening it's doors in 2005, this township accommodation has managed to develop a great reputation among both international and domestic travellers. We have 3 bedrooms with bath ensuite and 4 bedrooms with shower ensuite .Three bedrooms have a balcony with a view of the township and Table Mountain in the backdrop. We also offer township walking tours which is a favorite amongst our guests. We are also very close to Mzoli's place a barbecue hot spot so if you have never been to Guguletu visit us for a tour of our neighborhood and something to eat at Mzoli's butchery. After something to eat take a stroll down the road to Liziwe's Guesthouse where you can spend the night for an unforgettable African experience of a Lifetime.

The guest house is very convenient to the airport. Great place to stay if catching an early flight. The owners Donald and Liziwe couldn’t be more accommodating. Very friendly and helpful. Rooms basic but clean. No food served at this time, but Donald suggested places near by to eat. I would definitely stay here again.

My wife and I were met at the airport by Andrew from Liziwe’s, spent one night in Room 3 of the guesthouse, and then given a private tour of Gugulethu and the Cape Peninsula before being dropped off at our longer-term accommodations in the Bo Kaap. We had arranged everything ahead of time by email, and it was clear from the beginning that Andrew (the property’s manager and tour guide) was organized, conscientious, and interested in planning out a day that best matched our needs.

It was a weeknight in the winter, so there were no tour groups around, and we appeared to be the only guests the night we stayed. We were given room 3, which was clean and comfortable. The view from the room and its balcony in the morning were stunning, with the sun on the mountain and the gentle activity of kids heading off to school. I wish our schedule had allowed a few more nights to really enjoy the rhythms of township life.

Dinner and breakfast at the guesthouse were simple but hearty and relaxed. Liziwe is sweet and charming, as is her husband Donald, with whom we talked for the better part of an hour after dinner. Andrew was an excellent host for our full-day tour the next day, chatty and informative without being obsequious or intrusive. The vehicle and its driver were safe and comfortable, and the tailored itinerary was well worth the money we paid.

I highly recommend at least a night or two at Liziwe’s, and perhaps longer if you have your own vehicle and want a safe, convenient base for exploring the region.

We spent 2 nights at Liziwe's on our arrival into South Africa. A genuine Township stay hosted by an amazing family. Lovely ensuite bedroom. Superb views over the Township to Table Mountain. Balcony safety railings to be put in when can be afforded, Donald fiercely proud of his achievements building Liziwe's without borrowing any money and is respected for doing so. Book direct with Liziwe's rather than through an agent to put all your money back into the Township. Take the Township tour with Andrew and Donald. The real deal. A very safe and interesting experience. liziwes@telkomsa.net

We wanted to end our two week trip to South Africa with a township tour, and we had the great fortune to find Andrew to take us! He made the whole thing very easy, from the initial prompt response to our inquiry (and it was a very last minute thing!), to the great instructions he gave us for driving ourselves there, to making sure we got to Mzolis' restaurant, and then to the airport on time.

Andrew gave us a fantastic tour. He started with a background of South Africa & its complicated history, in the manner of a great storyteller. At first we were really wondering what we had gotten ourselves into, a white guy in the townships? But Andrew actually is one of only three white people living in Gugulethu and is such a decent person, he obviously won over the community. He is very concerned about giving back to the community and helping to develop it in way that has integrity. An example is having Danwe, a young man from the community, working and learning along side him, apprenticing to become a tour guide (Danwe is an excellent young man and will be great at it!).

Andrew gave us new insights into the townships, helped us understand life there in a non-condescending and realistic, yet optimistic way. We felt like we could ask him any questions we wanted to (and we did, hundreds of them)! He really loves his job and it shows.

I had an amazing time in Guguletu! Liziwe's Guesthouse is an absolutely beautiful space and I received the best hospitality possible. The guesthouse is located right in the middle of the Guguletu township, which really provides a unique experience (and a very rewarding one, too). The people in the township are so very friendly and you will be welcomed with open arms. I was made to feel right at home despite the fact that it's very different from the USA! I really wish I could go back already.
I can't say enough about Andrew and Donald, who will make your time amazing. They go out of their way to make sure that you are happy, safe, and enjoying everything. It also helps that they know Guguletu (and much of Cape Town) like the back of their hands. You will leave this place feeling like you've made lifetime friends. It really is a special experience and an absolute must-see if you are visiting Cape Town.
Even if you don't stay in the guesthouse, you absolutely must take a township tour with Liziwe's Tours. You will learn so much and meet so many interesting people... I couldn't have had it any better and it was the most rewarding thing I did in all of Cape Town (which of course is saying a lot).
I am so thankful to them for leaving a permanent mark on my heart and making my time memorable.

Please also read the article I wrote about my experience in Guguletu. I offer my honest description. It has meant a lot to me to be able to give back to such kind people! You can access it here: http://www.lasplash.com/publish/International_151/visiting-cape-town-south-africa.php

All in all, a life-changing experience and one you will never forget!

We stayed at Liziwes for a night during our travels in South Africa based on a recommendation in the lonely planet, and what an incredible experience!

We have to admit, being British and driving through the townships and shanty towns to get to the guesthouse made us more than a little apprehensive! But we received a wonderful welcome from Liziwe and Donald, and especially Andrew who was a fantastic host.

Firstly staying here is 100% safe and we did not encounter ANY problems whatsoever. The guesthouse is in the township and not in a shanty town. The rooms are decorated to a good standard and cater for every need, with a lovely balcony and ensuite shower room. Sadly the guesthouse is currently being renovated and the kitchen was closed, so we cannot comment on the food here (much to our disappointment based on previous reviews!)

Andrew took us on a 2-3 hour walking tour of the township, which includes a visit into the adjoining shanty town and to various memorials. There is another staff member who walks behind during the tour to ensure you are not hassled, but all of the people we met and passed were very friendly and greeted us politely. The children would come running up to us for high 5's and we never once felt uneasy. Andrew was a fantastic tour guide, made us feel very welcome and gladly answered any questions we had. The walking tour was a great experience and we felt we learnt so much about this towns important history. Andrew then took us to eat at Mzolis Place which was fantastic and we loved the food and vibe there.

It is so easy to form preconceived ideas about the townships, but you cannot judge a book by its cover and we definitely learnt this. Staying at Liziwes was a very real and humbling experience but one we throughly enjoyed and felt that we came away with much greater understanding and respect for these South African people. We would highly recommend this to everyone.

While at home in New Zealand, I was trawling around the internet looking for accommodation for our family (2 adults, 2 kids age 6 and 9) while in Cape Town. I came across Liziwi's Guest House. I thought it looked interesting and proceeded to contact them. Bookings were made, and confirmed with ease. When we arrived we were given the warmest welcome, and felt utterly at home. Andrew and Donald (Liziwi happened to be away at the time) couldn't have been kinder to us all. We arrived a bit late, but no problem, food was ordered from Rocky's take out and my son still claims they're the best chicken wings he's ever eaten. The next day we were taken on a tour of the Township, and had the history of the area explained. That night more delicious food from Rocky. I'm really pleased that we all had the experience of staying here, and it's certainly helped me understand a little of what life in the Townships is really like. This is a guest house you will never forget, and I couldn't recommend the experience highly enough.

Response from Liziwes, Owner at Liziwe's Guest House & Tours
Responded 28 Feb 2017
Dear Anne and Family Hope that this email finds you well and that the kids are all grown up happy and healthy. We are all doing fine but unfortunately we have had some really bad luck and our business is really going to suffer should we not be able to get our building sorted out. It is quite a long story and I did send an email and pictures to 'faulknernz@gmail.com'. I am really not sure whether you did receive the mail so I decided to see if I could contact you through tripadvisor. Hoping to hear from you Liziwe

I absolutely agree that a bus tour of a township is not enough to get a real feel for the area, plus it's hard to know whether your money is really going to the people in the township. Staying at Liziwe's is a way to get to know the township better, and you can feel confident that your money is going to the people who really live and work there.

Liziwe's guesthouse was painstakingly built by hand over 8 years by Liziwe's husband Donald. Even at 62 years old, he's still working on expanding the guesthouse, brick by brick. They hire their neighbors are cleaners and guides, so everyone in the neighborhood benefits from the guests that come in. Every Christmas a percentage of their tour proceeds even go towards hosting a huge neighborhood Christmas party, where every child gets a present!

Our room was very comfortable, with both a single and a double bed, a television, and a bathroom with a big tub. Breakfast is included in your room rate (just R500 for two people), and you can arrange to have Liziwe cook dinner for you, complete with a bottle of wine, for just R80 per person. Donald and his nephew joined us, and we enjoyed hearing their stories about growing up in the township and how the culture has changed post-apartheid. Liziwe is also a great cook, and we loved our dinner of stewed pork, rice, spinach, and butternut squash. We had an afternoon tour with Donald and his colleague Andrew, which was fascinating, and it was especially neat to see where part of Invictus was filmed (right down the road from Liziwe's!).

Mzoli's, Gugulethu's most famous establishment, a semi-outdoor BBQ joint that all kinds of people flock to every weekend, is also within walking distance, so if you're planning on going there, it's quite easy to combine it with a stay at Liziwe's. I highly recommend Liziwe's to anyone visiting Cape Town. We felt very safe and comfortable the entire time, and it gives you at least a small taste of township life.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay with Liziwe and Donald. Their hospitality is unmatched. Sitting around the table after dinner talking with them over glasses of wine was delightful. Tour of the townships with Andrew is DON"T miss!
