Detailed Reviews
The Hostelrie at Goodrich is in a great location to explore the Wye Valley with many local walks. The staff are friendly and helpful and food excellent. The whole hotel is dog friendly and all staff were very welcoming to our Labrador. Breakfast was plentiful with locally sourced bacon, sausages and eggs. Our room was not huge but warm and comfortable and entirely adequate with soft towels and plenty of hot water

First and foremost we felt very safe in these uncertain times. Plenty of social distancing, plenty of outdoor space and well ventilated in dining room. Able to eat outside if preferred. Perfect location to stay, a short drive to the bank of the River Wye to picnic and watch canoes, paddle boards and swimmers. Beautiful, clean rooms and all staff worked hard to make our stay enjoyable. Beds very comfortable, beautifully clean bedding and towels. Nothing was too much trouble for Front of House, Graham and his colleagues. Even with a busy Friday evening we felt very relaxed and everything was calm. Plenty of space for parking. Breakfast superb and included in price of stay. We had an excellent meal on Friday evening, some guests may prefer a wider choice. Perhaps display of the daily evening menu on the reception desk would allow guests to consider dining options. We were not clear if the menu changed daily. One small suggestion for the rooms would be to consider instant coffee sachets, small milk cartons and biscuits need to be packaged. Nice touch to have bottled water in the room. Overall the best stay we could have asked for and any reservations about staying overnight and congregating with people other than your family were taken away. Would certainly recommend and would stay here again. Thanks once again for a fabulous stay in Huntsham & Coppett.

Kate and Daniel successfully combine a friendly, relaxed atmosphere with superior cuisine and very comfortable rooms. The hotel is set in a hamlet surrounded by beautiful countryside, a bonus is that it is dog friendly and so one can really enjoy exploring the area with all the family. The food was delicious, staff very friendly and efficient and Kate was a perfect hostess. Our room was most comfortable with superior linen, a mini fridge with fresh milk, a cafetière for réal coffee: in fact, everything one could ask for.
I very much look forward to returning and wish Kate and Daniel all the success they deserve

Four years have passed since we last spent a rather raucous, but hilarious evening in The Hostelrie. On a flying visit to the area, the opportunity for a lunch in the garden arose unexpectedly and so with haste we booked in to what was promised to be a special experience, an upgrade, if you will, on what we had previously experienced.
First impressions were good as we made our way past the main indoor bar, refurbishment in this area was a significant improvement, the same was true of the dining room. The garden however, was less exciting and certainly not as impressive as the inside. Whilst smart new umbrellas (unused) were available at the tables, the very worn and weathered tables and benches looked out of place. A swing at the end of the garden looked in dire need of attention with one of the key ropes detached from its anchor and simply rolled up in a knot. Suffice to say we weren't using the swing, but would we have wanted a gang of active youngsters on board ? Probably not. But l digress.
To the food and service, the reason we were there!
The menu allowed for a group to identify at least one dish each that they were excited to order, although it would be fair to say that for a small local pub in Herefordshire the price of the dishes resulted in a sharp intake of breath from more than one in the party. The first challenge was trying to identify starteres from mains within the menu. Choices were fairly limited and there was nothing immediately available on the menu for vegans, although a couple of dishes could be reworked to accommodate all requirements. My choice was a smoked mackerel and horseradish pate, that was perfectly edible, but frankly lacking in taste, the accompanying bread with a single drizzle of oil and balsamic onion accompaniment failed to lift the dish. Don't get me wrong, every plate of the table was cleared but no one was smacking their lips, or loudly proclaiming that "you must try this". It was a lunch menu, dinners may be better, but as a group, well, let's just say that we were all left wanting.
To the service, no condiments on the table or offered to us. Table left uncleared of glasses and crockery, one hour after the last time the waitress came to the table. No attempt to offer additional drinks after post-meal coffees had been served despite the fact we were sitting in the sun for a substantial period of time. We were not offered a bill but had to go and find a member of staff to bring it to us, a process that took longer than expected. Overall, table service was perfunctory.
Sadly, the group left disappointed.

Response from Katherine Balanovsky, Owner at The Hostelrie at Goodrich
Responded 20 Aug 2021
Good afternoon Sandjaw, Thank you for taking the time to review your experience at the Hostelrie. I am delighted that you considered the extensive refurbishment that we have carried out in the pub & restaurant to be an improvement. We are however slightly baffled by your comment that the garden was not "exciting"; most reviewers find it an attractive & relaxing feature of the property. Equally your comment regarding unused umbrellas? We always open the umbrellas before lunch services & as for the worn & weathered tables this is an outdoor beer garden in a small, local pub in Herefordshire... I agree that the swing is a problem & was broken from over enthusiastic use some days ago & we have had immense difficulty finding tradesmen to get it removed. You are right it looks an absolute mess. Our lunchtime menu now reflects the varying requirements of our guests. Some prefer smaller meals, some sandwiches & some a three course meal. We do rather believe the price gives a very good indication of whether the dish is intended as a starter or main, I do apologise if you found this a challenge. Whilst we acknowledge that our prices may not be the cheapest in the area we know that they are in line with most establishments that are comparable - & overall we believe our prices to be exceptionally good value considering our dishes are made fresh, from scratch, to order, daily (incidentally we know our prices are are no different to those under the previous ownership of this establishment as this was our intention). Our menu we acknowledge is not extensive. This is deliberate. We do not possess a microwave, rarely use freezers & all food is cooked to order. We prefer to have a small menu as this can best reflect who we are & what we do. We do ask for dietary requirements & allergies at time of booking (you advised you were vegetarian - not vegan) & we can usually accommodate vegans, but as they are still a minority keeping a dish permanently on the menu would result in waste - which we are very against. Your review has prompted us to add a comment to our menu stating that if you are vegan to mention it to a member of staff - so thank you. I find your comment on the smoked mackerel frankly, odd. This freshly homemade dish is often singled out by guests as being particularly enjoyable. Also I would suggest that smoked mackerel, horseradish, & balsamic onions are not tasteless flavours - it would be difficult to make them so. Obviously the food was at least acceptable, or the plates would not have been cleared; it a shame you did not mention your disappointment at the time so we could do something for you, although it may not have seemed valid given that all plates were cleared. Regarding the condiments, I know people have mixed feelings on this. We do believe in seasoning food appropriately but always ask if anyone would like anything else once all food has been taken to the table. If asked, we always happily bring condiments but we are not telepathic. I do apologise if there was a wait in clearing the table - however I seriously challenge that there was an hour's wait; you were checked on frequently. As the proprietor I am very aware of customers needs & although you were in the garden I/we did frequently observe to give you the opportunity to ask for anything; we do not like to be too intrusive on our guests. It is also our policy to let guests ask for the bill, this was asked for twice within minutes by two different members of your party going to & from the ladies. It took less than 5 minutes to bring out. Whilst we always welcome reviews, we do consider that you may have been looking to find fault given the implausibility of several of your comments. I would stress that as the new owners we have only be open 4 months during a very challenging period for hospitality in general & perhaps a particularly challenging time to start a new business. We really care about what we do & what our guests experience, & we do acknowledge that we are still learning & establishing ourselves. We are pleased to be able to say that most people do enjoy their experience with us, as can be seen from our other reviewers. Best wishes Katherine

Three mature adults with limited appetites booked a 13.00 Sunday Lunch. The ales were well presented and the bar area, where we ate was pleasant enough The inn was not particularly busy. The support staff were very efficient and helpful but the manager/owner had all the customer service skills of Mr.Bean on a bad hair day as he showed us to our table. We wanted a roast but didn't want the set 2/3 course lunch but Mr.Bean was quite adamant we had to. The meat was cooked well, the vegetables were thoughtfully presented but the amount of vegetables for the 3 of us was inadequate and even a mouse would have begged for more.. We asked for some more potatoes and when they arrived it appeared as if they were the scrapings from the previous Sundays roasting tin AND we were charged for them. The cheese board had a varied selection on offer with a tasty chutney on the side. Coffee was served with one lump of sugar on the side; and what no obligatory biscuit/chocolate? The luncheon was spoilt by Mr.Bean, what seemed like penny pinching and neglect of detail. Perhaps Mr.Bean should realise he is in the hospitality and not the hostility business.

We booked late and the only available dog friendly room was the family room, so our fault. However for a B+B rate in excess of £160 per night, we had expected more.
Positives. Good Covid protection and measures. Very friendly and helpful staff. Very animal friendly. Great location and good parking.
For improvement. Room in need of updating and redecoration (bathroom had been updated but cheaply). Insufficient accessible plugs. Tiny and old TV. Poor WIFI (required as little to no mobile signal). Little breakfast choice and unimaginative. Supper was good homemade pub style food. Dining room again needs updating.
This lovely building - and staff - could offer so much more (and better value) with updating and imagination with the food.

We stayed here with our dog, and a friend who brought his dog and we all really enjoyed our 2 night stay for The New Year.
The meals were excellent, piping hot and large portions. The staff really went out of the way to make it a lovely time for us - it was spotlessly clean - we would recommend this Inn and will go back in the near future - The New Years Eve entertainment, so we were told, was cancelled but that did not matter. Lovely place and lovely people!!

We visited the Hostelrie on a Friday evening-every effort had been made to make us feel safe & welcome post Covid. We had a super spacious table, the food was good & Graham was extremely kind to our huge dog!!
The ambience was friendly & although everyone was socially distanced, they achieved a buzzing atmosphere.
We enjoyed our meal, a nice bottle of wine & the whole experience of ‘being out’
Would recommend and will definitely return

We booked here for lunch on our way to our holiday cottage. We had a lovely table in the garden and were given one menu which was a fixed price lunch menu, only two choices for each course, priced at £18 for 2 courses or £23 for 3 courses. We had 3 courses, the food and the service were excellent. My husband paid the bill and we felt we had had a lovely lunch and gave the waiter a generous tip. When we reached
our destination we rechecked out bill. Instead of paying £23 each for our food we had been charged for each course individually resulting in an overcharge of £8! So our lovely lunch left us feeling robbed. During our week's holiday we had 3 further attempts to overcharge by restaurants which when challenged were claimed to be errors.I know they have been through a hard time recently and need to earn some money but this is not the way to get the support of the paying public.

Lovely hotel nestled in the village of Goodrich, two minutes from the castle. Victorian gothic style building, clean and contemporary inside, warm wooden bar, and stylish restaurant with sparkling glassware. Food was fresh and delicious, best halloumi burger I have had. Wonderful choice of wines and particularly liked the wine suggestion with each menu option.
Excellent coffee served in caffitiers even in Bedrooms. Wide choice at breakfast (vegetarian options more than usual😁).
Service was attentive and friendly. Good WiFi. Room/bathroom was spotless, beds very clean and comfortable, linen and towels fresh, shower hot and easy to use, great Bramley toiletries that smelt heavenly. Would stay there again and recommend.
