Jabu treated us like royalty. Will definitely visit again. The place is just magic but the service was the best ever. The food was amazing and made us feel very special. The accommodation was immaculate.

Stayed at the Wild and Free for two nights and it was absolutely amazing. The food and accommodations could not have been better. I stayed in the leopard suite and was even better than I expected. Thank you.

As a special gift for my 70th birthday, the family arranged for the two of us to go to Wild and Free for 2 days. What an amazing experience it was! We were met by a smiling Susan with a hot towel and juice as we climbed out of our car and John was there to take our suitcases to our room. Jabu, the legendary chef, manager and wonderful host all rolled into one, welcomed us warmly. We were treated to a cappuccino while we waited for our room to be ready, We had arrived earlier than book-in time so as to enjoy the surroundings but did not have to wait long! The main lodge is so tastefully furnished and the view magnificent. John took us up the hill to our beautiful honeymoon suite- how exciting to be upgraded! The room was beautiful with a four-poster bed with netting - like in a fairy-tale! There was an indoor bath and an outdoor shower. The "loo with a view" looked out onto another tent-like room which had a day bed and out -door jacuzzi set under a wild fig tree. Just below this was a lovely deck which seemed suspended over the bush. What struck us was the absolute silence which enveloped us. Other than bird-song there was nothing to disturb the tranquility. The room had every luxury one would require, including fluffy gowns and most welcome slippers, hand cream, bubble bath, bath salts, tea, coffee and rusks, a fully-stocked bar fridge, air con etc etc etc. And then there were the meals! Oh my word! Jabu's cooking and presentation of each dish was amazing and we rolled out of there every night! Torches were provided for the walk up to our chalet and we appreciated the exercise after all that delicious food! Our room looked beautiful in the soft candle-light with chocolates (that we just could not eat till the next day due to the meal we had just enjoyed!) waiting on our turned -down beds. The game drives with Seun were most enjoyable and informative and finding the female cheetah on our last evening as we were heading back to the lodge in the dusk was the cherry on the top! Seun's perseverance had certainly paid off! Having a roaring fire waiting for us when we got back, along with warm towels to wipe off the bushveld dust, as well as a welcome drink was yet another treat by this wonderful staff . We have traveled extensively world-wide and we can honestly rate Wild and Free as the best accommodation and service we have ever enjoyed! Well done, Jabu and your team!

Ok, so for those of you that skim over reviews or just need the basics, here it is: what an absolutely amazing place. You cannot go wrong. There are game reserves out there for double the price that won’t give you this experience. Service is super personal without being intrusive and you really do feel like you have your own private game lodge. And the food...well what can I say it was unreal. For those of you that like detailed reviews, here goes: TRANSPORT: Its exactly 2 hours from Joburg airport to the main reserve and then about another 30 minutes on graded gravel roads. If you are self-driving follow their directions closely as once in the game reserve itself it can be tricky. We arranged a return transfer through the lodge with Penquin Tours (info@penquintours.com). They were fantastic and the owner, Francois, has some incredibly fascinating stories to tell. Safe, efficient transport in a nice, air-conditioned minivan. You could probably book directly with them but if the lodge does it, it is more convenient. LODGE: Met on arrival by Marieke with an ice-cold mocktail and ice cold flannels. Thank goodness as it was 35 plus! We were given a quick tour of the lodge and met chef extraordinaire, Jabu. He’s such a jolly character and immediately asked us what we sorts of food we liked, any allergies etc, a nice touch. ROOMS: We stayed in the Monkey Suite which is magnificent. It doesn’t have an outdoor bath or Jacuzzi, just an outdoor shower (there is an indoor bath & shower as well) however it is the biggest of the 4 suites and has an upstairs lounge level. Marieke showed us the other suites briefly before other guests arrived and they are all amazing. Giraffe room has an outdoor hot tub but Leopard Suite (honeymoon suite) has an awesome outdoor bed if you choose to. All rooms are absolutely spotless and well stocked with fancy toiletries/products, quality towels and linens and good mattresses. It is so quiet and serene out there that you will never struggle to sleep anyway. The aircon struggled a bit in the larger Monkey Suite however I don’t think this would be an issue in the smaller rooms. Not a criticism though as it was particularly hot when we went. Be aware that there are several pathways and some steps to and from the main lodge and rooms so if you have any major walking difficulties, just be aware. FACILITIES: The main lodge is simply stunning. It is built as a perfect mix of a lodge and a private home. There are ample areas to sit and read as well as a nice bar area. Outside the pool deck has a magnificent view and we spotted some animals quite close by such as giraffe and zebras. There are only ever 8 guests at any time so no issues with space or sunbeds etc. The Wi-Fi is free of charge however it wasn’t great and dropped out some times. Again, not a critisicism as this is out in the middle of the bush and if you choose a game lodge based on the quality of its internet connection, then that’s frankly a bit sad. FOOD & DRINK: If you’ve read the other reviews, then believe the hype! How Jabu manages to surprise you at every sitting is incredible. Some reviewers have said there was too much red meat on the menu. Yes, there was red meat, but we also had amazing chicken sosaties and light salad snacks. Besides, I’m not sure quite what people are expecting at a bush lodge in South Africa? The staff are always on hand to offer you a drink but there are also well-stocked minibars in each suite. PLEASE NOTE: many reviews and certain websites have said that this is an all-inclusive lodge...drinks/beverages are NOT included (including bottled water). No big deal but just be aware before you go as “all-inclusive” is not what it means in European terms. If you like any particular type of drink, let them know in advance and they will ensure they have some for you. While we were there, there was us and another group of 6. Although we wouldn’t have minded sitting all together, they made a real effort to give us and the other group privacy, which we thought was really thoughtful. ACTIVITIES: There are 2 game drives a day led by the inimitable Jan. I appreciate that most people want to see the Big 5 when in Africa but if you listen carefully Jan has a wealth of knowledge about all sorts of wildlife, especially birds. He’s an excellent tracker too. We struggled to find the elephants the first day but Jan made it his personal mission to find them the next day. He followed tracks and dung for about an hour and we eventually found them. There’s not the masses of animals you may see in Kruger but there’s also not the masses of self-drive tourists climbing out their vehicles to get a closer shot of lions. In fact, it gave us a much better feeling of satisfaction when we did find something. The lions are in a separate enclosure (book in advance with W&F – about R450 pp) as they pick up diseases from the buffalo. However, when I say enclosure, we are talking several hundred hectares, not a drive-in cage! Only my old nemesis the leopard eluded us, otherwise we had great sightings of everything else. You can do other activities such as Elephant Intercation, Cheetah walks, horse rides etc but this is not offered by W&F themselves and needs to be done at the larger concessions in the reserve. W&F are happy to arrange this for you though. There are massages and treatments available and these are done by Marieke as well. My wife had a massage and loved it. The massages are done in a beautiful, secluded spot a walk away from the main lodge. STAFF: The staff really do make this place and they all work so hard. I don’t know how they all managed to fit so much into a day. I really hope they are appreciated by their employers as although the setting is incredible, it simply wouldn’t be the same experience without them. And don’t forget to tip them, especially if you are visiting with Pounds/Dollars, they really do work hard to deserve it. Our thanks go to Jabu, Marieke, Jan, Progress and Brenda for a simply unforgettable stay. Feel free to email me if you have any particular questions: dietzpix@yahoo.com

I loved this Lodge. Fantastic views, the honeymoon suite is the best I have ever stayed in (as were the other rooms), the food was amazing and the staff went out of their way to be friendly and helpful. The Lodge can only accommodate 8 guests at a time, so this is what I call real exclusivity. No young children are allowed and therefore the perfect place to get away and re-charge your batteries. Highly recommended and I will definitely be back.

After a scenic route through the park with rinos and a giraffe crossing our Path we were welcomed by Marieke. She showed us our room which was big, private, beautiful and very nicely decorated. During our stay she was the perfect and friendly host with golden hands. Try a massage at the wild and Free! This was the start of a lovely 3 day Bush experience. The FOOD prepared by Jabu was lovely. He knows how to please people not only in preparation but hè also gives great attention to the visual details of the FOOD. Susan took really good care of our room , after breakfast everything was clean allready and at night when we came back after diner the candles were lit and the lights and the choclats were welcoming us. Jan the driver is a good ranger, hè knows a lot and likes to share his knowledge. He did everything in his power to find the big five which we in the end saw all. We also had the pleasure to meet the owner Linda and her friends. She explained her Vision regarding her lodge, the privacy, comfort, home away from home feeling, FOOD, game drives etc. The one thing we know now, since this was our first bush experience this won't be our last. Thank you all so much. Really hope to be back Sometime. All the best for you, love Appie en Mir
