Marataba Mountain Lodge offers seekers a soulful safari adventure, a place to balance alone time and meaningful connections with others who share this approach to life. This remote retreat overlooks the breath-taking Waterfall Valley, with wide-angle vistas of the Waterberg escarpment. Fully solar powered, five private Luxury Rooms blend into the environment, and offer a king-sized bed, fireplace, en-suite rain shower, and shaded viewing deck. On hotter days, guests can enjoy the guest pool at the main lodge. Enjoy game drives with our professional field guides, bush walks, morning and sunset water safaris, or a night under the stars in Thabametsi Treehouse. Bush dinners and boma dinners are filled with conversation of all the adventure of a safari. Marataba is a privately managed section of the malaria-free Marakele National Park. The park is a ‘place of sanctuary’, as its Tswana name suggests, conserving 67 000ha (165 560ac) of the Limpopo Waterberg’s biodiversity, as well as Iron Age sites of great historical significance. The game here is impressive in number and diversity due to Marataba’s location in a transition zone between the dry western and the wetter eastern regions of South Africa. Its wildlife includes the Big Five and abundant bird species, with the largest colony of endangered Cape vultures (including 800 breeding pairs) in the world to be found here. Rare plant species of yellowwood and cedar trees, ancient cycads, and fern trees flourish here. Marataba is also malaria free.

We were at Marataba for the first part of our honeymoon and were immediately greeted with drinks, snacks and a drive to the Mountain Lodge after checking in at Safari Lodge.

We loved every part of stay - especially as it was our first safari, we have been thoroughly spoilt and not sure whether we can go another one!
Steph and her team including Andre were attentive without being intrusive and catered for all of our needs during our stay. Steph organised our Covid test to enable us to travel on to our next destination and the process was seamless. Andre even provided delicious off-menu chilli sauce which he made himself, it was delicious with eggs for brunch.

Sean was our guide and he is incredibly knowledgable, kind and thorough. He organised a walking safari for us and other guests and was a great opportunity to view Marataba on foot as well as found us a great sun-downer location for our last night. He was tenacious in his approach to find us the best animal sightings and nothing can top the leopard in a tree during our boat trip!

We were lucky enough to book a night in the Tree Lodge and this was a delightful experience. We were dropped off with enough food to sink a ship and spent the night watching the stars (navigating the constellations with the iPad provided). It was unreal to wake up, watch the sunrise with a cup of coffee surrounded only by the noise of the baboons, kudu and birds. Highly recommend!

A beautifully designed and executed, intimate lodge in the heart of the Waterberg Biosphere. Excellent game viewing and luxe accommodation. The hosts and rangers are attentive and eager to make the stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. Game drives, hikes and bush walks as well as a sunset river cruise are executed excellently. A few minor changes to the rooms like a snack for coffee, a few glossy mags/books would complete the experience perfectly. The wine list should be somewhat more impressive at this price point. The scenery and safari experience is impeccable!

Three nights at Marataba Mountain Lodge is the perfect way to get out of town, be in the fresh air, see wonderful game and be thoroughly spoilt. The team at the lodge take care of your every need - Steph the lodge manager is so friendly and welcoming, Gary keeps you fed with wonderful meals and Chris is the perfect host. Hendrik, our ranger was very knowledgeable and did his best to make sure we saw as much as possible. Thank you all for making our trip out of town so memorable.

Pure bliss at Marataba Mountain Lodge. As you gaze out across spectacular landscape towards the magnificent Waterberg Mountain range you can appreciate Limpopo at her finest. Mountain Eco suites are understated and perfectly appointed with spectacular glass frontages. The More Team understands unobtrusive service excellence and are warm and hospitable. Robyn our guide and Anneline our butler made our 3 night stay exceptional, and Enoch was charming. Meals were generous but a little inconsistent in quality. Special dietary requirements were well accommodated. Game driver with Robyn were holistic and professional. She has a wide range of interests including grasses and stars. We were spoilt on a morning water Safari where we saw pythons basking in the reeds along the river and had exceptional birthday sundowners on the side of a dam watching hippos frolic as the sunset. An all round fine experience. The people, the place and unspoilt South Africa at its best. Mountain lodge is not for anyone with mobility issues as the rooms are up a rocky, steep path. The Lodge is also set deep into the reserve so it takes a while to drive into the valley and plains, but we loved the seclusion. Would highly recommended Marataba Mountain Lodge if you are looking for peace and tranquillity.

I can only echo what other recent reviews have said with respect to the delightful and capable staff, outstanding food, and matchless views. Due to scheduling issues (my group spent only 2 nights there) we did only two game drives, one of which was truncated, and we mostly saw rhino, rhino, and more rhino! But any deficiency was made up for by the magnificent setting. The river cruise down in the "flatland" was also a real treat as the setting sun lit up the escarpments and our guide spotted a small python in the reeds!

I have only two quibbles. Our "bush walk" required us to go back down to the plains, where we trudged around in a circle in a vast open grassland which was mostly sand, with a few trees. We didn't have plants to learn about or tracks for the guides to explain. We were told by our group guide that South Africa puts limits on bush walks for "older people;" frankly, I would have been willing to skip this one in favor of a game driver. The lodge was originally built for walkers and I believe there are much more interesting trails near the lodge.

The other issue was that the walkways between the cabins is rough, uneven stone, with irregular steps. At least two of my group of four found it a challenge to negotiate (admittedly, we're seniors, but not at all decrepit!). We even suggested that a discreet handrail be installed and were told that it was being considered but they had to get the "esthetics" right. Hey, some rough-hewn wooden stakes and a coarse rope would look great and would allow us old geezers to move much more confidently.

A unique place and for the right person, not to be missed.

We could not have asked for a warmer and better welcome from the staff members. Nerine was so helpful and nothing was too much for her. Hendrik is so knowledgeable about the bush and taught us so much in his own unique style! Chris was always around us ensuring that we don’t go thirsty or hungry.
The views and the sightings were incredible and we saw some very unusual animals that kept our game drives exciting!
A wonderful place to visit and highly recommend. Thank you everyone at Marataba!

The most incredible 4 days of our lives. My husband spoilt me to a romantic getaway to Marataba Mountian lodge for two nights and one night stay in the Treehouse.
Absolute magic!

The mountain lodge was beyond imagination. Chante the manager who set the complete ton from the second we walked in, was always smiling and couldn’t do enough for us.
Andre the absolute best ‘butler’ around! Made sure we were always well looked after, drinks at the pool area kept flowing and we were always served the most incredible food, from the time we woke up. He made each person feel like they were his only guests at the lodge. Nothing was every too much for him.
Hendrick was the most incredible game ranger. His passion for his job came through every game drive/walk and water safari.
The knowledge that he shared on every animal to the most finer details in the bush. Every drive/walk with him was an absolute adventure and he made sure we got the best out of every game drive.
The Treehouse.... I cannot even put into words what an incredible experience that was, from star gazing, to hearing lions roaring... It was without a doubt a bucket list experience I will remember for ever.

I hope we can go back and enjoy this magic again one day.
Miss you already Marataba ❤️

From the moment we arrived we were warmly welcomed. The food made by chef Gary and chef Martin is exceptional. Jen and her team are simply fantastic. We spent a night In the tree house and watched a pride of lions wander past pausing to glance up at us as we finished our dinner. If you do have an opportunity to stay here the wifi in the lodge is excellent, there is no phone reception so we used watts app to keep in contact with home. Dining is set out individually unlike many lodges so you can enjoy your privacy if you wish or as in our case we got on very well with others at the lodge and enjoyed chatting and a glass of wine toasting the sightings of the day which included leopard, pangolin , rhino, cheetah and lions. The guide we had , Hugh was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic, we asked many questions including about the geology of the region and found he knew the answers off the top of his head in great detail. 5 stars simply doesn’t do this place justice. The rooms are fantastic, extremely comfortable with a well stocked bar, excellent coffee machine and still and sparkling water in ample supply. The path is steep and rugged so a head torch is useful. If visiting in winter as we did then gloves and a warm fleece for early mornings and late afternoons are very useful. Water bottles and blankets were provided on the morning and afternoon safaris and greatly appreciated.

Dear Peter and Katherine It was such a pleasure, and I think we enjoyed your stay even more. We are still talking about those night vision goggles. Your sightings were truly amazing and you definitely experienced the magic. Hugh loved sharing his knowledge and sends a warm greeting your way. The whole team is smiling broadly after reading your kind words. We hope your memories of Marataba keep you both going until the next time you can join us for that afternoon chardonnay, dinners by the fire and under the stars, fun conversations, and more. Stay well. Kind regards Jennifer Maher, Marataba Luxury Lodges

The remoteness of Mountain Lodge, and the fact that no children are allowed there, more than made up for the small-ish size of the suites!

Set in a secluded valley, with a stunning view, Mountain Lodge is a great place to get away from it all.

Amazing good, great service, and the staff's attention to details make it a worthwhile stay.

Don't expect extensive game viewing, compared to the lowveld game reserves, but the views and remoteness more than make up for it. Despite this, we saw many rhinos, including a very payful baby rhino, lions, the elusive African Wild Cat, as well as hyenas, elephants, etc.

Highly recommend a night stay at the treehouse, but that is very much weather-dependent!

Be warned though, that this area gets really cold in winter, so I would not recommend going any later than mid-April.

Dear 'Nakkiran' We were so happy to read your review. The magic of Marataba Mountain Lodge has to be experienced to be understood. The breathtaking view and the energy of the mountains around us still impacts us every single day, and we love nothing more than to share it with our guests. Our eco-friendly Lodge has been carefully designed to have minimal impact on the environment. The orientation and size of each of the Suites was planned to capitalise on comfort and the view, and to take as little space from the mountainside as possible. You've hit the nail on the head when it comes to Marataba's wildlife. The rhino sightings are legendary (thanks to the efforts of the conservation team on the ground), and you can expect to see the unexpected (along with the predators and elephants) while adventuring these vast open landscapes. You really do feel as if you are out there on your own, considering only a couple of lodges traverse 21000 hectares of untouched wilderness. Although it does get chilly in winter, that's actually one of our favourite times of the year! There are few things as pleasing as sharing company around the warmth of the fire, under cosy blankets and with a glass of good red wine under the bright heavens that never end. We stoke the coals in the fireplaces in each of our Eco-Suites at sundown, and always make sure that hot water bottles are prepped and ready for early morning game drives, and at bed time. The bush is a lot clearer, so the animals are easier to find. It really is a very special time in the wild, and many prefer the more moderate (but still warm) day time temperatures. Please do come and visit us again - we'd love the pleasure of your company, and are sure that you'll always experience something new. We still do. Sincerely, Nerine Madden General Manager, Marataba Luxury Lodges

An idyllic hideaway. This lodge provides excellent service, comfort and solitude with breathtaking views over the valley.
If you want quietness and privacy then this is an oasis . The accommodation is comfortable and the food is excellent.
The manager , Jen and her staff are friendly, helpful and professional. They key is also the flexibility they offer regarding meals , timings and willingness to arrange daytime bush walks etc.
Another star , was Laz , our field guide. She was a truly inspirational person , her life story is fascinating , and her passion for the bush is infectious. In 30 years of plentiful bush experiences all over South Africa , this ranked in my top 3 for sightings. Incredible Lion and Cheetah sightings and I saw some firsts too , including a Black Mamba ( not for the faint hearted!). The game is plentiful in Marataba and is in excellent condition too. I will be returning ASAP
Thank you to everyone who looked after me.

Hi Melissa My wife walked with normal sneakers. Its better to wear jeans on the walks to protect your legs. Trail walks arent challenging at all. You walk on level ground for 2/3 hours. It was magnificent. We loved this lodge so much since its very private, and each guest gets lots of personal attention. Dont go to the Marataba Safari Lodge, rather try the Trails one. You will enjoy the walks in the bush alot !
