#1 of 2 Speciality lodging in Marakele National Park
Travellers' Choice
Marataba is a malaria-free 21 000ha (51 890ac) private concession within the Big5 Marakele National Park (Limpopo, South Africa). Just four hours from Johannesburg, this is a sanctuary where busy people can find themselves again by connecting with nature. We were rendered breathless by the dramatic Waterberg mountains, vast plains, rich animal diversity and winding rivers cutting through the landscape of the Marakele National Park. Rich red mountain rock meets lush green plains (where you will find yellowwood and cedar trees, 5m high cycads and tree ferns). All of the large game species from elephant and rhino to the big cats, as well as an amazing variety of birds (including the largest colony of endangered Cape vultures in the world, with more than 800 breeding pairs) have settled here. Marataba Safari Lodge is a simple extension of the natural environment beyond its walls - rich, bold, organic and patently magnificent. Whether you prefer your own company or that of new-found friends, there are a number of spots from which to soak up the view - hammock, pool lounger or grassy patch. On the menu for your pleasure is a smorgasbord of activities from which to choose. Whether game drive, walking trail, sunset river excursion on Miss Mara, or a private dinner for two, there is never enough time to exhaust the many ways there are to love this place.

We have been at Marataba the second time as we really like the place. Even though the overall experience was great again we had been very disappointed with the booking. We booked and paid our stay in full about two months before our visit. The Friday evening before our departure on Sunday we received an email that due to an admin error we would need to pay an additional EUR450. We could not speak to anyone as everyone left for the weekend. We decided nevertheless to leave for Marataba on Sunday. We were able to speak again with the agent and she apologized but mentioned that the Marataba management insisted on the payment. During the entire stay noone from the management contacted us, no apologies, nothing. When we checked out and had to pay the forced extra charge no management was available. This was a very poor client experience and we will surely not come back for a third time. Errors can happen but there are better ways to deal with them.

Went away for an Executive getaway. This is a very relaxing yet hot venue in November. Drink lots of water. The food is grest, service round the pool is great. The staff at the lodge are all very friendly and helping. You must take up a few game drives. Lots of wild life to see. Animals are in grest condition. Robyn is an excellent game ranger. Will definitely recommend this lodge.

Marataba is a very special place. I felt a real connection to the reserve – and is shockingly beautiful. We had the privilege of having two guides – a guide from our tour company that stayed with us throughout our 10-day safari and a local guide at each of the three safari lodges. Our local guide at Marataba, JJ, was great. We had many special encounters during our 2 night stay at Marataba Safari Lodge. We started with a white rhino mother and calf, followed by a large male who is not the calf’s father. The mother defended the calf right in front of us. We then saw cheetah brothers who formed a coalition. As the sun fell, the brothers spotted a male kudu and started to advance on it. The next day, we saw a 3m African Rock Python and a female cheetah with her three cubs. That night we went on a river cruise surrounded by hippo and countless birds and then saw a male lion situated perfectly on a dam. Marataba is a really special place. The main lodge was beautiful and the team was just amazing. We stayed in a tent – but it can only be described as glamping at its finest. The tent has a permanent structure supporting it – and is absolutely beautiful inside. The bathroom itself almost tempted me to stay back from a game drive in order to indulge. The bed was so comfortable. The tent just made it feel so authentic. I would return to the Marataba Safari Lodge in a moment. It was perfect service, in a beautiful setting with unique lodgings that were a highlight of our 2.5 week trip to South Africa.

Room Tip: Some of the tents are a bit far from the lodge - but all very beautiful and equally appointed.

Marataba Safari lodge totally blindsided us - we were expecting to have a relaxing anniversary weekend near-ish to Johannesburg, but this place took it to a whole new level. From the sincerity and warmth of the welcome and introduction, we knew this was going to be a different experience. We met Stohm who would be our guide for the duration of our stay. It'd be hard to find a game ranger as cool, sharp and passionate as Stohm. The level of personalised attention was just incredible. We're reasonably experienced safari-goers and he managed to make it all come alive. We absolutely loved our game drives and bush walk with him. The food was excellent all round and staff were perfectly attentive without being intrusive. The room had magnificent views and the whole place was subtly and tastefully decorated without the usual afro-chic cliches. We were given some extra attention because of our anniversary which was very thoughtful - we were very grateful for that. We will not hesitate to take our family to Marataba, which will hopefully be soon.

During two weeks honeymoon we stayed for 4 days / 3 nights. The food at each meal was absolutely delicious. The staff at the lodge were so accommodating and made us feel right at home in the middle of the most beautiful mountain country. Our room was very comfortable with specular views of the mountains and animals that came right up to our front door. We ate lunch and swam in pool surrounded by monkeys, impala and warthogs but never once felt afraid. Our guide, Frinette, was amazing. She took us all over the preserve for both day and night drives. She was so knowledgeable and passionate about the animals. We learned so much (about animals, the stars and how to order drinks in Afrikaans) and got amazing photographs of all the big 5 (except the leopard but we saw Cheetah with Cubs eating a kudu which was even better). She took photographs for us, made drinks for us at our breaks and was so warm and engaging that she became a highlight of our trip to Africa. Staying at the lodge was unforgettable part of our honeymoon and we would love to come back.
