My partner and I visited the Lion Sands Resort and stayed at the Ivory Lodge (this is the flagship property for the resort) for our honeymoon, which was a wonderful experience. The rooms are private, and beautifully designed and maintained. At this property they also have a small communal bar/lounge, a sun deck for dining and a small restaurant. It’s very intimate and the majority of time you will spend our on the bush tours; or in your room. If you are looking for a more lively, social experience I would suggest the River Lodge which has a large Fire pit , gift shop, and larger bar area (about 20 rooms vs. the 9 at Ivory). The Ivory Lodge however- is without a doubt, more luxurious.

The staff is very welcoming and accommodating, offering fresh hand towels after every bush ride, a glass of bubbly, and is happy to escort you to your room before and after experiences to ensure you are safe and fulfill your every need. You have the same tour guide, butler and cleaning staff for the duration of your stay which makes the experience very personal and customized.

The food is well presented and flavorful, but you have to be open to trying some eclectic and exotic foods (kudu, ostrich, deer, curries etc.) They are accommodating and will make exceptions (they even have kosher option) but you need to be open to something new. Not for a picky eater.

Food and beverage is all inclusive. The details are top notch and the overall experience is very much 5 Star. Would highly recommend this resort, for the perfect 3-4 day vacation (anything longer then that is mundane and repetitive).

Top notch lodge: beautiful architecture, stunning location, spacious and comfortable rooms, tasty food, excellent guides and trackers, great spa, very attentive staff.

We arrived at the river lodge straight from J‘burg /our international flight into SA. Within minutes of arrival at the lodge and first game drive we found ourselves decompressing from everyday and corporate stress. Game drives take place for 3 hours twice a day (5.30am and 4.30pm). The safari vehicles are the most comfortable we have ever experienced and with max. 6 people on each vehicle. Cruising through the beautiful landscape open air so comfortably is already a mediative and highly enjoyable experience, the incredible animal sightings (which in our case happened every day during the 4 days we stayed there) is a plus. Our guide Gus and tracker Tony were simply fantastic. Experts in their field leading to sightings of Big 6 + more and incredibly friendly too. It was a pleasure spending our time in the company of such impressive people. During morning drives there is a coffee & snack stop and in the afternoon there are sundowners with snacks. Gus and Tony always took us to incredibly scenic locations to enjoy these treats. We cannot stop rewatching the videos we made and hopefully experience this live again soon.

The lodge itself is very stylish and in a stunning location next to Sabie river. Just lounging by the beautiful pool in between game drives is bliss with antilopes grazing nearby and making the whole experience serene beyond words. There is a little gym, a creative gallery and a boutique on-site. The food is mostly very good. Very good snacks are available prior to each game drive in the lounge, breakfast is delicious, for lunch & dinner there are 3 options to choose from followed by a sweet dessert or fruit. The wine and bubbly in the all-inclusive package was ok, but I think there would be better options in the same price class in a country like South Africa.

The spa therapists were great. We went for a deep tissue massage, which was heavenly. Also the great Africology products are available in rooms and are sold in the spa. Finally, our butler Elliott was beyond attentive. Once he knew our preferences, he would pro-actively spoil us for example by already heading our way with our favorite drinks for lunch and dinner. Also once he saw how I prepare my morning muesli (with all bran and almond milk) he went on to prepare it for me exactly as I like it. I never felt so breakfast pampered before!

A clear COVID protocol was in place incl. daily measures of temperatures, wearing mask in public areas, mini breakfast buffet brought to each table etc.

My husband and I booked during the early stages of lockdown. This enabled ordinary South Africans like us, to experience the luxury and kind generosity of Lion Sands. Often one finds that on specials the service providers skimp and offer a lesser service. At NO time did I feel as if we were getting the discounted package. For that I commend the whole team. Lorain the chef produced the most delightful gourmet food. The combinations, the balance and not to forget the wonderful plating provided a wonderful food experience. Solly our butler was kind, attentive and anticipated our every need. Anthony and Andries our guide and tracker were lovely. Trying hard to give us the best possible game viewing, sharing knowledge. The room was immaculate and so well designed - decor delightful. My kind of style.
We would be honoured and privileged to have another chance to visit you and hopefully SOON. Thank you

The location, the service, the attention to detail, the luxurious accommodations, and the safari guides made this trip well worth any cost. Our Abercrombie & Kent tour guide, Cameron Pearce, was knowledgeable, captivating, and full of energy. The safari guides knew exactly where to locate the most exciting animals and the animal activities. The “Big 5” and more made multiple appearances, sometimes virtually within reaching distance of our safari vehicle. The food was well prepared, presented, abundant, and delicious. I do not hesitate to recommend the tour company, the safari lodge, and most assuredly Cameron Pearce our A&K tour director.

My fiance and I stayed at Lion Sands River Lodge for 4 nights and 5 days. From the moment we landed, everything was prepared for us. Our guide picked us up and stopped on the way to the lodge to see some incredible animals. They prepare food prior to every game drive by a 5 star kitchen, meals are served after the game drives, and there are even drink/snack stops during the game drives! The rooms are maintained and cleaned several times per day, and you are assigned a personal butler from the moment you arrive until the moment you depart. The staff will take care of everything you need, before you even ask!

Our guide, Jamie, and our tracker, Lloyd, made an amazing team. Their communication among themselves and the other trackers led to an incredible game watching experience. They provided us the opportunity to see every animal on our list, up close and personal, in their natural state. They strove to provide the best experience possible, and they certainly delivered on that. Jamie took us on a bush walk that allowed us to experience the safari from a whole new point of view. He provided incredible information and details about each and every species of animals, birds, and plants that we encountered. Highly recommend these two! They were amazing!

Overall, the Lion Sands staff, accommodations, and privacy provided us with the most amazing experience of our lives. The treehouse lodge provided us with an opportunity to be part of the African Bush in a way that I never dreamed. A huge thank you to everyone who helped make this trip the trip of a lifetime!

This was the second Safari of our trip to Africa ( first one at Lukimbi) lion sands has a very modern feel to it with very modern and spacious lodges.
Food and drink is plentiful and quality is very good, but of course you are there for the Safari drives and LionSands did not disappoint (Irish) Mike and Patrick were absolutely brilliant a good team, full of knowledge but also great fun. Mike even organised a private room one evening after our drive so we could watch the highlights of the last day of the Test match, brilliant service !!!
We were lucky to share a jeep with great people (David, Richard, Raphael and Fernanda ) which made the Safari drives great fun but also made the evenings into great social occasions. (Don’t get me started about Amarulla )
My only issue with Lion Sands was the level of tip that was suggested, ( although it does tell you this is discretionary,we always like to leave something for good service) I thought this was excessive given what you pay, I sincerely hope this is not because staff are not paid a decent wage as they certainly deserve it

Spent the night star gazing the African skies....the treehouse luxury setup offers both comfort and the location is isolated in the bush to offer ultimate camping experience.
The flexibility of the Safari offered us an opportunity to see the big 5 up close. The lodge provided gourmet meals, bush breakfasts, boma dinners and packed picnic basket for treehouse dinners and breakfast.
Slept peacefully under the mosquito nets!!

My husband and I just checked out and I am happy to say this was the best experience we’ve had traveling. We have been all over- Thailand, China, Europe, Caribbean, etc- and you won’t find a better experience or nicer staff.

Quintin was our guide and Noel was our tracker and we are happy to now call them friends. Their passion and knowledge was outstanding and every safari was a new experience. We were so impressed by them.

Ntumbe was our personal waitress (everyone gets one) who had an amazing memory and had our dietary restrictions memorized before we arrived. She was exceptional. The food was honestly incredible and very impressive for the middle of a safari, and we have very picky taste and high expectations. Food is always available and you’ll never be hungry. This was all inclusive.

The days are set up where you go out on 2 safaris per day then have down time in the middle. If you are wondering if you will actually see animals, YOU WILL. Sometimes too close for comfort. You can reach out and touch lions, it is incredible. The guides also have immense respect for the animals and nature and it is evident by how comfortable the animals are around the vehicles. My only critique would be to have more guest activity during this down time. This being said they do have a pool, gym, bar, etc.

This is family friendly but I think teenagers and younger would get a little bored during the day if you stayed more than 3 days.

I thought this would be a once in a lifetime trip but we will absolutely be back. The entire staff is so thoughtful and each day was well planned. All the travel is more than worth it. Thank you so much to all the staff, especially Quitin, Noel, and Ntumbe!

We cannot say enough good things about Lion Sands. From the moment you’re picked up at the airport to the moment you leave you feel like family. The grounds and rooms are meticulously maintained and the location right on the river is great for animal sightings.

You don’t go hungry at the lodge and have a great selection of food. We had a chance to try some new options like ostrich too. Givens our butler was very attentive and kind. He knew our preferences (like the chili sauce…very good) and made sure we were well taken care of.

The spa was great. The masseuses were very good and made sure we left feeling better than when we came.

Our guide Cruz, guide in training Joyce and tracker Lloyd were amazing! They were so knowledgeable and determined to give us a great experience. More than that they are great people. We miss them!

We also stayed one night in the Kingston treehouse which we highly recommend. It was so peaceful and came with all the necessary amenities. Givens made sure we had plenty of great food and drinks too.

Can’t say enough good things about our experience!

The staff went above and beyond to make our stay amazing. When an uninvited 4 legged visitor ( just a friendly hyena!) came into our our lodging during a safari drive, ( a true testament that this is in a prime wildlife viewing location!) the staff made sure that everything that was damaged was replaced, including expensive medical equipment! We were then offered to stay at their ultra exclusive Ivory Lodge in a private villa, that is larger than an average NYC apartment, complete with huge private plunge pool that is deep, clean and refreshing. Lion Sands River Lodge and Lion Sands Ivory Lodge are located in close proximity, but are quite different. It is impossible to say which is better. Although Ivory Lodge is the super luxury option, with guest privacy a priority, the comradery at River Lodge is warm and welcoming. Also, at River Lodge, a fantastic photography center has resources to download photos and print them onto canvas. It is possible to rent a camera and lens, allowing guests to take professional pictures without lugging around heavy equipment or purchasing expensive zoom lenses. Plus there is the assistance of Fortune, the resident photography expert. He can help to edit the pictures, give you tips, and a run down on how to use the camera features, ensuring you will come home with National Geographic quality shots, printed on canvas. (This service is available at both lodges, but is accessible without needing a game vehicle from River Lodge) At the rustic but sophisticated bar at River Lodge, a sip of South African Gin, Inverroche Amber, concluded our first afternoon game drive. Thanks to OZ, our game drive guide, for also guiding us at the bar! During our 3 days of game drives we saw all the big 5. Plentiful lions, elephant, leopard, giraffe, zebra, crocodiles, and numerous bovidae and birds. On our second day, our incredibly observant tracker, Evans, and our determined driver and guide, Lee, put us at the scene of a fresh kill before the other vehicle arrived. Her driving finesse off road was as exciting as witnessing the lions feast on fresh zebra! Finally, perhaps the most unique feature of staying at either lodge, is the opportunity to stay under the stars, in the middle of the bush, in the safety of a treehouse! A packed gourmet dinner (and breakfast in the morning) was set up overlooking the sunset. It was an evening of lavish style in the wild. Off grid, the two treehouses available to rent, both have toilette facilities and running water. The bed and linens are crisp, clean and comfortable. It is was perfect merger of remoteness and luxury and the experience punctuated our extraordinary stay. I most definitely recommend staying here!

A safari adventure by all accounts. Thank you for your wonderful feedback. Our lodges all have their unique personalities, and you certainly captured the essence of River and Ivory lodges well. Being on safari is a fine blend of those private moments along with the moments of shared experience. We are glad you loved all of it - the wildlife, the treehouse, our creative lab, our people, and our location. Every day has its own unfolding magic. We hope you will join us again! Thank you for reaching out. We have the following options open to families at Lion Sands River Lodge: 1. A triple Luxury Room, where all three are accommodated in one room. The 13 year old child would be charged at 50% of our adults sharing rate. 2. Inter-leading Luxury Rooms (two adjoining rooms, where the 13 year old would be in his/her own room, and would be charged the adult single rate - children only qualify for the discounted rate if sharing with adults). 3. A 2-bedroom Family River Suite (the 13 year old child would be charged at 50% of our adults sharing rate) Our team is on standby to provide further information should you require.

I was there for a week last week, and had zero mosquito bites despite being outdoors for the majority (including a treehouse stay). I stopped malarone two days into our trip actually as it was a pain to take and mozzies seemed non existent this time of year, but I guess it’s always better safe than sorry.
