Just 1.5 hours from Kigali is a hidden gem perfect for a weekend escape. The owners of Umva have taken time to really create a space that feels like home, from the rooms to the shared areas. The rooms, made with compacted earth walls, have beautiful views of the lake but are at the same time cosy and private (and the bathrooms have hot water!), whilst the lounge area has comfortable couches and hammocks for whiling away the hours. The stay includes access to the kayaks and stand-up paddle boards and there's also a tennis court and yoga deck (for those looking for something less active). The staff were friendly and attentive and the food was delicious: served communal style with good vegetarian options. The WiFi was also good, and a study/library area was under construction for those looking for a relaxing remote work location. Whether you're looking for a luxurious stopover on the way back from Akagera, or an active (or relaxing) weekend getaway, Umva has it all.

Only just over an hour from Kigali this was a wonderful weekend getaway. It's an adult only place which can probably accommodate somewhere around 20 people at capacity. The price was very reasonable for the quality of service, facilities and accommodation. This is particularly relevant in a part of the world where prices for good hotels can be very high indeed.

The rooms are lovely. I was in a pod which had a beautiful lake view. The building and fittings were all of good quality and well finished. Everything was spotlessly clean. The design was perfect.

Food: Great options for each meal. Breakfast was a buffet with hot food to order. Lunch was a choice of mains and dinner was a 6 or 7 course meal round a community table. I couldn't fault it. They have their own vegetable garden. You pay for drinks on an honor system.

Setting and Facilities: Excellent there is plenty to do - yoga, kayaking, paddleboard, birding, tennis, massage - probably more but I didn't check it all out. The communal buildings are well appointed with comfy seating areas, hammocks, fire, terrace. I was impressed with the design of the building, it blended in to the environment beautifully in line with their sustainable ethics

The only thing I could fault was that the coffee was way too strong and over brewed. But I am being picky here!

As I live in Kigali - I will be back for another weekend and I am certain I will enjoy it just as much.

Well done!

Room Tip: Facing the lake choose a room on the right hand side if possible. Apparently they are quieter.

We stayed at Umva on Lake Muhazi for one night, as short break to get out of the city and enjoy a lake we had not yet visited.

Prior to arrival we received welcoming emails, with clear instructions and online check mechanism that streamlined the whole process. After a short easy drive from Kigali, we were welcomed in and directed straight to our rooms before being provided an excellent welcome drink and briefing. As this is a new lodge, you expect some bumps in the service, but the team they have put together are very relaxed and pleasant and managed their blended roles well, both with checking, room support and meal service.

As you arrive you are greeted the individual builds amongst the green bank of Lake Muhazi. The rooms are aesthetically design to keep in tone with the design and minimal intrusion on the locations. The buildings are designed with rammed earth walls and simple brick work which creates a very pleasing atmosphere through the lodge. We stayed in the birdhouse, which is tall build with seating space, bathroom on entrance and a mezzanine above where you sleep. Mornings are treat from mezzanine as you get full view of the bird life across the lake shore.

There are a range of activities you can undertake at Umva, including kayaking, paddle boards, tennis and there are plans for massage as well if i remember correctly. The equipment is in good condition and one of the team is one hand to provide support and guidance (as well as cold beer should you require it).

The main lodge building hosts a dinning area with a dramatic live edge table, small kitchen area for drinks and ice and an open deck with seating, hammocks and fire place to the side. The bar works on a honesty system, guests can serve themselves and share their bill at the end of the stay. Dinning is done via a set meal with all guests eating together as a shares experience. This created a great atmosphere, where you are encouraged to meet different people and continue conversations after dinner by the fire. The food is well prepared, fresh starters, well cooked and seasoned meat (beef cooked medium as asked, rather than well cooked), the vegetarian option looked good as well. They also can make ice cream in house, which i always a bonus! Breakfast is more served from the normal hours, but also well cooked, with options for eggs, porridge etc.

This is a unique experience for Rwanda, its proximity to Kigali is great. The atmosphere created by the joined dinning is enjoyable. Great for trips out of the city for the weekend, even work retreats etc...

My partner and I had an incredible experience staying at UMVA over Valentines Day weekend and I would seriously recommend it for other couples, looking for a romantic get-away.

From the moment we arrived, the staff were attentive and friendly, providing us with helpful tips about fun activities to check out during the day (we ended up going Kayaking down Lake Muhazi, which was a lot of fun).

Our room was beautifully decorated, quiet and peaceful, and provided an incredible view of Lake Muhazi. My favourite aspect of our room must be the shower: it was really thoughtfully designed, with wooden floor boards that naturally attract heat, which is somewhat similar to a sauna experience - super relaxing.

If you're travelling to UMVA, I would encourage you to combine this trip with a visit to Akagera National Park, which is relatively short drive away (amazing and affordable safari experience).

We had a wonderful 3 night stay at Umva Muhazi. We were able to stay during a family weekend, and had a terrific time with our two small kids. The location is very convenient to Kigali, only 1.5 hours, which made getting there a breeze, just a short jaunt off the main road past Rwamagana. The facilities are very well appointed and the staff incredibly warm and accommodating. We found it an easy place to stay with kids, with plenty of room to run around. The many kayaks, which you can use any time, were a great way to get the kids doing something new, and to get in some exercise. The food is also A+. We so enjoyed the varied, local, and multi-course meals each night. The community dinner also made the place feel more like home than a hotel. Overall we were incredibly impressed with Umva and we all can't wait to go back!

Recommended by friends we took a two days escape from Kigali. Being four friends we booked the spacious bungalow. The rooms and surrounding are delicate, very high standard. In particularly the bathrooms are worth mentioning.

the common areas are spacious but invites to make contact with other guests, of you like that. The staff are always available to make you comfortable and offers varied activities, some for free other at a resonable fee.

All cabins are facing the lake. During daytime you will see many many bird species, and at night you will here even more, in a cacophony with frigs and insects. Amazing symphoni of nature.

The food need to be mentionned in particularly. The chef and his staff of servants provides world class food for all meals. We had two lunch, dinner and breakfast. Their "trust-bar", self service and self billing with magnets on the menu, keeps track of your drinking. The prices are modest, atvleast for local beers.

At last I will mention the buisness /seminar center fully equiped with all the tech you need. I spent 3 hours in a Teams meeting with my company in Norway. The wifi was fast and stabil. My new "home office"?

If you are looking for an actice og relaxed escape, UMVA is the place.

We had the chance to stay at Umva before the official opening and the place is truly amazing. Grab a coffee, this review is gonna be long haha.
The view is fully green (no house in sight!) everywhere you look, beautiful birds hanging around, of course the peacefulness of the lake… So calm and resting without being too far from Kigali.
The pods are well designed, the rammed earth gives a natural look and the room was comfy and packed with nice attentions (don’t want to spoil it for you so you’ll see by yourself!).
The common area is also very comfy and designed to relax and share moments. I loved the concept of the community dinning table, if you are feeling like meeting new people this place is a nice way to go about it, for friendship to start or just a nice experience outside of your usual circle. The food was great, the chef is playing with different flavors while using common and local ingredients and it was really enjoyable. It’s also nice to have vegan and veggie option!
Lastly the activities are fun and I really enjoyed the kayaking on the lake, such a peaceful moment.
The service is also impeccable which adds to the overall experience. As a conclusion, I absolutely recommend this place for a stay!

Umva is a gem, just 1h30 drive from Kigali.

The team was welcoming and the service was excellent. Make you feel at home.

The food was delicious and we really enjoyed the big dining table were all guests have dinner together. Very convivial.

My kids favorite part was kayaking on the lake.
Mine was reading in one of their hammocks.

The place is beautiful and well-built. The use of construction material, the small details in the room, the confortable beds, everything has been well thought of.

We have already booked our next stay!

What an incredible place to escape the city and see the beautiful Rwandan countryside.

The rooms are all private lake facing structures with huge windows and incredible views. Each space (we stayed in 3!) was uniquely designed, feels very private, and has great amenities (lotion, robes, slippers, drinking water, etc).

The common areas are well thought out, encourage engagement with other guests, and none lacks an outstanding lake view- great to watch local fisherman at dusk in canoes or cows coming to drink on the opposite bank in the early morning.

The food was a delicious 6 course meal served community style by the friendly staff. Lots of great wine and liquor options all served on an honor system.

I would recommend to someone on a big once in a lifetime trip or a weekend getaway from Kigali. Will be back
