We booked a spacious sea-facing room at short notice. The price was very reasonable - and the sea was so close you could smell it. Getting to Kalk Bay or Muizenberg is an easy walk, so a car is not essential.
The hosts (Pat and Mike) were very friendly and knowledgeable. The breakfast was wholesome and varied. If the weather permits, sit on the verandah for breakfast (and feel like you are on holiday)!

I have stayed about 8 times at Sonnekus over the years. Every time has been wonderful. This time I stayed from 8th March to 27th April. Much of this time was during the lockdown when I was confined to the guesthouse. Even though I could not go out I still enjoyed the ambience of the guesthouse, the ever changing views and moods of False Bay, the sounds of the ocean at night and the fresh sea air. Pat and Mike Allum went out of their way to shop for food for me during the lockdown. Mike even drove me at night to the pick-up point at Cape Town stadium so I could join the coach to Pretoria for the repatriation flight to Melbourne. The breakfast is delicious and varied and a fabulous start to the day in the beautiful dining room. I missed not being able to enjoy the lovely beach across the road. And St James is the best part of Cape Town. I highly recommend Sonnekus!

Popped in for a breakfast catch up with friends. Immediately noticed the steam punk coffee machine and a selection of cakes and biscuits. Chose to sit inside with views of the garden and the ocean, felt relaxed immediately. Breakfast was served speedily and the coffees were delicious. Had a great chat to the owers and wish them well with the refurbished and interesting decorated hotel and cafe. We will be back.

I really disliked the way I was treated by a staff member- there was a payment mix up but I was disregarded when trying to say I had already paid. Ended up paying twice and had to wait for a refund; none of this was my fault as I even sent proof of payment 2 weeks in advance. I felt like I wasn't being taken seriously and brushed aside. Also, there was an extra charge for breakfast which was a surprise; nowhere is it mentioned that bfast would cost extra on website when I made the booking. It is really not acceptable; it was implied that breakfast would be included in the booking cost. Had we known this we would have had breakfast somewhere else that morning. The stay was absolutely wonderful, beautiful accommodation and amazing location! Unfortunately our experience staying there was spoiled by the treatment from staff member as well as breakfast that we felt tricked into paying extra for.

My boyfriend booked a surprise stay through Airbnb for my birthday. The booking was made and paid for a month ago. On Saturday afternoon, we drove for hours only to arrive at 6pm and be told that they had no record of the booking and were full. The booking that had been advertised, booked and paid for, was occupied.

The receptionist, sadly super unhelpful, albeit understandably out of her depth, blamed Airbnb and told us to 'take it up with them' as they had not sent the email with the booking. The message, essentially, was that we should sort it out ourselves. "Not our problem".

We were to find a place to stay at 7pm, birthday plans bitterly ruined. We had made plans in Kalk Bay, for what was supposed to be a special occasion. We got back to a place to stay in Cape Town an hour later, having lost most of the evening. The whole experience was bitterly disappointing and quite grim.

The host/owner was unreachable through the Airbnb channel at the time. Luckily, someone who overheard us at the guest house gave us the owner's personal number. The gentleman who answered essentially repeated "sorry, I just bought the guest house recently, there seem to be issues" - and also blamed Airbnb. We called Airbnb the following morning and they confirmed that our booking request was sent to and confirmed by the host / guesthouse.

The lack of accountability is not okay. The stay had been planned ages in advance, and as a birthday surprise - it is time that we will never get back.

A response from both parties would be the bare minimum, please.

Stayed here with my wife for 14 nights. Booked on 3rd party Booking.com. Read some reviews before booking but unknowingly under a previous owner.
Let us start with the positives.
Right across from the beach and just a walk to Kalk Bay. Staff excluding the owner, very nice and polite. The biscuits and sweet free all day.
Now for the negatives. Owner, impossible to speak to. Ran in and out fast to avoid any eye contact. For guests staying 14 nights to not even ask how our stay is going is very poor. Breakfast was a two tier menu with off the street customers offered a wider selection off a large menu and ourselves that had pre paid through a booking site left with basically egg and bacon on sourdough as a hot offering. Asked to change bacon for sausage one morning and you would have I was asking the waiter for one of his kidneys. This down to no empowerment given from the owner and staff too afraid to make an on the spot decision. Rooms were cluttered and dated. The maids did not have a hoover but used brushes on carpets, just moving the dust around, not good for people with allergic reactions. Would not recommend a stay for anyone particularly people who book through a 3rd party.

A pleasant stay for a short period of time in a guest house where the past whispers to you around every corner; from the lounge to the rooms, to the veranda, all recall a time when life was somewhat more convenient. In summary - all good thank you.

The only negative aspect was the wifi which tended to dip overnight.

A complete mix up with my accommodation at Sonnekus Beach House! My booking was completely ignored through either incompetence or ignorance. I expected some kind of apology (at least) from the Sonnekus reservations team after understanding that they had made an error. But clearly customer satisfaction and apologizing for errors made is NOT a part of the culture at this establishment.
I will not visit Sonnekus Beach Hotel in the future and do not recommend it to others.

I have been coming to Sonnekus for both business and pleasure for short trips over a number of years. It is a lovely 'old style' building that is impeccably maintained, friendly and with excellent service. Nice to see the area is picking up again and nightlife and restaurants were all in full flow on my last visit Good access to small beaches and a really fun tidal pool. Recommend watching the sunrise if you can.

Exceptional service in a historic home framed between the Atlantic Ocean and mountain views. Comfortable rooms with all the requirements to give a luxury feel. The sweet station on the first floor is a nice touch and the restaurant service available is convenient. Short walk to St James and Dalebrook is also within walking distance.
