Detailed Reviews
When arriving at Kosi moon bed and breakfast we were very welcomed by the hosts ray and liz ! I've never met such friendly people before. My boyfriend and I stayed for 6 nights and it was the most beautiful and relaxing trip I've ever been on. We stayed in the house in one of the rooms which were always cleaned very well and were spotless! Ray and Liz took us under their wings while we were there to ensure we had the best possible time. Even went as far as buying us after sun on the first day due to being burnt from the beach. The beaches are very beautiful and so is the lagoons/lakes. We came in a ford fiesta which I WOULDN'T recommend doing as you wont get to the mouth. You NEED a 4x4 in kosi bay. This was the best news years I have had and it was so relaxing with all the beautiful sounds surrounding you. I loved Kosi moon bed and breakfast and so did my boyfriend.

If you want a place where you can unwind, far from the madding crowd, I can highly recommend Ray's place. Accommodation is not luxurious, but that is not why you go there and you have all you need and it is clean and the beds are good. They can serve breakfast and dinner, but that is all optional. Enjoy the walks, the turtles laying eggs (but quite a drive), the beautiful views from the swimming pool, the walks to the lake👍

My husband, our 17-year-old daughter and I spent a night with Ray and Viv at Kosi Moon in mid-December, 2012. As it happened, we sought to return there on our way back from Ponto Du Oro, Mozambique, for a second night as we had enjoyed ourselves, and it was fortunately possible. The fact that we wanted to go back is the best recommendation and can there be anything more to say really?
To provide some details, though, we occupied spacious, clean and thoughtfully-appointed accommodation, tucked away in a peaceful spot near Kosi Bay, with nature all around.
You can bring your own food requirements to do your own cooking in well-appointed kitchen facilities, and being a family, we chose this option but Ray and Viv will also provide you dinner. We saw them providing great meals and their breakfasts were just excellent.
We impress on visitors to follow Ray and Viv's clear instructions to get there. You do need to do all the details. Arrive in daylight too. However, if you get unsure that you're on track, just ask local people. They are very helpful.
Ray and Viv have the most beautfiul domestic pets (dog/cats), which we loved. For us, it's another great part of the experience.
There is no lack of beautiful places to visit nearly if you stay for an extended period. Kosi Bay mouth is the one that we visited and it is magic. There is lots more.
We are Australian and were at Kosi Moon quite early into our 10,000km, month-long experience of wonderful Southern Africa. At Kosi Moon there is gentle beauty. You feel a purity there; but it is that and more, as it is also well thought-out for visitors too. In the words of our daughter: Kosi Moon was SO GOOD.

Ray was polite, but i think due to the fact he was sick maybe we didn't feel the friendliness we encountered everywhere else we met in south africa. I am not sure if this was because we did self catering, but although Ray was polite we did not feel he went out of his way or bend over backwards like everyone else did in every other place we stayed at in South Africa, again not sure if he was mad because we booked self catering or because he was sick. The first night we arrived I called Ray to tell him we would arrive by 6, but then groceries and deflating tires took a bit longer, at 5:45 Ray called us and I thought this was to inquire about our well being but it was in fact to ask if we had any room in car to pick up his friend on other side of road which we did not as we had luggage.
Again when we arrived, Ray showed us to room and told us we can figure out what we want to do next morning, however we had to call ourselves and arrange the tour, We just felt the overall attitude was not helpful, everytime we asked what is there to do he just said you need a 4x4, and we can't do anything without a 4x4, we said we don't mind paying for tours but Ray didn't respond anything to this,
He did lend us snorkeling gear that we did not use as we never found the place to snorkel, and it was very much the attitude of figure everything out yourselves, which I don't mind but would have appreciated knowing in advance, all other guest houses, we have stayed at in Johannesburg, in Kruger, in Malelane, in Sodwana, the owners just went above and beyond
For example in Sodwana bay the owner actually met us on main road, then got into our vehicle and then directed us how to get to the road to guest house, in sodwana the owner even helped us carry all our luggage in, every day we received 3 texts asking where we are, if anything needed to be done, our laundry was even done for us at no request, the maid found the bag and decided to wash it for us, every night we were asked if we needed anything extra, if anything could be done, and this was like that at every place we stayed at its just the south african way, Here we felt very on our own, even when we went on the boat tour with \Steven just his attitude was so much more enthusiastic and helpful he gave us like 5 things to do and offered to take us to see market at mozambique but we could not as we were leaving day after he then told us to ask Ray to take us to market but when we did Ray said he was not going and there was no point to go until 1 anyways.
Although Ray asked us how our day was every day, and gave us snorkeling gear, we did not feel the enthusiasm and over willingness to help and smiles as we experienced everywhere else, and every time we asked the answer was always you can't do anything with a 4x4 and hiring a 4x4 is expensive
the self catering is very so so, our budget was 50 dollars a night, and we both felt it was very expensive for what we got, I think the other rooms ( not the self catering are actually nicer)
We are not picky travelers we have backpacked in peru, nepal, panama, dominican and thailand, we have stayed in hostels from 5 dollars to 20 and 40, and we have stayed in some nice places 70 and 100, we have stayed in places with no water, and no bathrooms where we need to walk to river to shower, and we both felt this was more of a an expensive backpackers then a guest house
1) there is no fan about the small gas stove ( no oven) hence when you cooked all the smoke went inside the room, and it was impossible to breath so we had to open the door, to let it out ( and of course bugs came in, we would have opened the windows but there was no mosquito nets on the windows so again bugs can come in
2) the amenities are very limited, we stayed in sodwana bay holiday homes which was only 38 and this had a full stove and 3 times the amount of glasses, utensil and cookware, here there were only 2 cups, so you can't for example make orange juice and coffee for yourself in morning just one or the other as only 2 cups,
3) there is no door that separates the bathroom and the bedroom hence when your partner goes to bathroom you can literally hear and smell everything, we have been dating for a long time so we don't mind, but for example again in sodwana for 38 dollars, we had a full living room, a kitchen, and a separate huge bedroom and a separate bathroom
4) the shower is in need of replacing, the pressure is very poor, and the covers also need replacement and so do the mosquito nets over bed ( which had 2 holes) and covers which were dated
We felt very crammed as the dining table and bed are very close to each other
It may seem like I am harsh but we both felt 50 dollars is just too expensive for such a place, when we got so much more for so much less in sodwana bay and were just 10 minutes to a beautiful accessible beach
If you come to Kosi Bay I recommend to 1) come with a 4x4 and 2) to camp as you will enjoy the beautiful grounds
maybe its just Kosi Bay is a very expensive area, but we both felt Sodwana was much more beautiful and much more relaxing, we left the accommodation feeling very awkward, and not relaxed we just thought there would be way more to do here, and that the owner would be more helpful in terms of booking things for us, maybe if we had stayed in the rooms and not self catering options it would have been different I don't know, but I would say stay in Sodwana, the beach is a mere 10 minutes away and unlike Kosi Bay very accessible, and like I said it blew our minds what we got there for a mere 38 dollars, I really wish I could give this place a higher rating, trully I do but we both thought it merrited a 2.5/5 and we felt the owner although polite had a very I don't care attitude towards us we personally felt and serious upgrading and repairs are needed in order to charge 50 dollers for this place sorry but its our personal opinion!

we spent 3 nights with Ray and Vivianne . The room was large, very nice with a terrace overlooking the bush , with the lake in the distance. You can do your own cooking ( the kitchen is very big and well equipped) but we prefered to have our meal with our hosts. The place is quite near the Kosi bay lodge, so you have to drive on a sand track to get there, we had no 4x4 car and managed ! We like walking, so they arranged a nice walk to the raphia palm forest with a local guide, and Ray took us to the mouth and we went also to a typical local market at the Mozambic border.A very nice place indeed to stay.

We unfortunately only stayed for one night. It has the perfect, quiet location in the bush away from everything. Ray went to quite a lot of trouble to accommodate us.
The rooms were nice and big and the food was excellent. Very well priced! Will definitely stay longer next time!

We booked a one night stay here, rather last minute as we got to the Kosi Bay Border after it closed. Liz, was warm and friendly on the phone, and provided great directions to get to the place.
Access to Kosi Bay Moon is well sign posted via a sandy road with plenty of bumps. It is quite literally in the bush so a 4x4 with good lights is a prerequisite. We booked two rooms – one with a double bed (and no door to the bathroom) and another with a double bed and then a set of bunk beds (I assume a family room). The furnishings were incredibly dated and the bedding felt like it had not been dusted or cleaned in a while.
Both rooms were very stuffy, with limited light, although there were mosquito nets on each of the beds and old school fans on the ceiling.
The splash pool was hard to swim in due to the high levels of chlorine and there was only a very limited view of the Kosi Bay Lake from the pool deck.
We chose to not have the breakfast (at an additional R75 per person) as we wanted to be by the border early the next morning.
Overall the place felt unloved and stuck in time, although Liz and her husband were wonderful, warm and kind. A little bit of TLC and this place could really be something but as it stands now, I would not return.

We booked for a night in transit to Mozambique. There is a sand road leading to the accommodation and we got stuck in this. When we called the host he said he could not assist us. We had to wait until someone came by with a 4x4 to tow us.
The furnishings, bedding and accommodation were dated and in need of some maintenance and updating. The rooms were dark and there was no shower head in the shower.
Overall, the place felt unloved, the welcome was un-enthusiastic and the price was not value for money.
The nearest town is not tourist friendly and in general, it was not a great experience.
