Track & Trail River Camp is a privately owned lodge located on a stunning spot on the banks of the Luangwa, just at the doorsteps of the South Luangwa National Park. We offer a small owner run safari lodge, specialized in photographic safaris and offer our guests all the comforts, while being located in wilderness. South Luangwa is known for exceptional up-close game viewing. Our Safari Camp is small and quaint with 9 Chalets in total; 6 cater for families as well as singles and couples and 7 rooms offer scenic river front with a direct view of the National Park. Benefit from our expertise and professionalism; our innovation and creativity; unparalleled location and setting (next to the main gate of the South Luangwa National Park); great service to guests. Track and Trail River Camp can be considered as the premier photographic lodge in The Luangwa Valley. Why?... because we have the knowledge and we can help our guests to improve their photography skills while on their safaris.

We started planning our safari almost four years ago, and with Peters help, originally settled on a three location break, with Track & Trail dealing with the additional lodge bookings and the internal flights for us, making the whole planning very easy. Unfortunately COVID intervened and after cancelling the international flights twice, and simplifying the schedule we finally arrived in Mfwue in August 2022. This was our first safari, and in fact our first trip to Africa. We were not disappointed!!
Track & Trail are ideally located, just a few minutes from the entrance to the national park, and on most occasions, we were the first vehicle in, avoiding the dust and able to get an early view of the animals. I have no previous experience of such safaris, or different national parks in Africa, but I can say that South Luangwa has set the bar extremely high! Animal sightings were plentiful and with the benefit of Peter or his team of guides & ‘spotters’, we were treated to a range of animal & bird sightings, informative explanations of animal behavior or photographic techniques culminating in a wonderful and memorable experience! While the big cats and elephants are impressive, we were also shown some of the smaller African wildlife and an abundance of stunning birdlife. This is a company which cares about the whole of African wildlife and not just the big game.
As for the camp itself, it is ideally located and very comfortable. Peter’s wife Chichi, and all the staff made us feel very welcome and relaxed. We were gratefully upgraded to the “honey moon” chalet, which was very spacious and comfortable. The food was delightful and the staff constantly helpful and welcoming.
Whether you are an avid photographer or simply wish to see the wildlife through your own eyes, I have no hesitation in recommending Track & Trail and Peter Geraerdts and his team.
Many thanks Peter for a truly memorable experience.

Their rustic, thatched cottages set along the Luangwa River are beautifully apportioned and incredibly tidy. The South Luangwa gates are only a quick drive away making this lodge a great jumping off point to the Mfuwe Sector. Every day after our daily game drive in the park, we looked forward to the delicious meals that the talented kitchen staff had prepared for us. You will enjoy a real taste of Africa here.

We were fortunate to (finally, after 2 years of Covid delays) stay at this amazing camp very close to the Mfuwe entrance to South Luangwa National Park. We stayed in one of the river chalets which had an extremely comfortable large bed, two seating areas, a large shower, tub and view of the river from two large windows. The room had all the comforts of a luxury lodge and the food was of equally high quality with dishes which varied each day. Exceptionally high quality and levels of service. Chichi and the camp team were so attentive, welcoming and friendly - nothing was too much trouble and we really felt part of a family during our time there.

In terms of game drives, we had booked sole use of a vehicle with Peter as guide for a specialist photographic safari. Peter’s exceptional guiding and knowledge of the bush is enhanced by his photographic skills ensuring we were always in the best place for photographs as well as anticipating animal behaviour. We were able to stay with interesting sightings longer as well as learning some specific photographic techniques. Highlights of our time with Peter included multiple leopard sightings, wild dogs, elephants, over 130 different birds (casual viewing as opposed to concentrating on finding them), amazing scenes with amazing light at dusk and dawn… and many, many owls - we have our best ever spot-light photos due to Peter and Andrew’s (our tracker) skills to find the birds and Peter’s photographic tuition.

We thoroughly recommend Track and Trail River Camp as a place to stay for the Mfuwe sector, with brilliant accommodation, a wonderful swimming pool, gym and bar / restaurant and food at great prices. South Luangwa is magical and we will always opt for Track and Trail River Camp when we return to this area, it would be like returning home.

Outstanding service and experience!

Our group of 7 had the pleasure of experiencing Track & Trail River camp through the recommendation from Ryan at Socially Responsible Safaris @srsafaris.

From the time we arrived until we left the camp, we were treated exceptionally well. The warm greeting from owners Cece & Peter, to the staff smiles from Albert and others made us feel welcome and at home.

The accommodations were spacious, clean and had everything you needed for a comfortable stay. The rooms have fans and big nets over the beds to protect you from mosquitoes along with an incredible view of the river. Listening to the hippos snacking on grass outside your cabin was such a special experience. “Pinch me am I dreaming?” was a constant comment from our group during our stay.

The food is - WOW! We had a few in our group with a few food allergies and restrictions and the chef’s made sure that no detail was missed in providing exceptional options for all.

You feel safe and secure when sleeping as Pearson takes good care to ensure you are safe to your room each night with the open camp it’s exciting to hear what animals travelled through the camp at night.

Vic who was our safari guide was OUTSTANDING! We had many game drives from early morning to late evening and amongst our list we saw giraffe, elephant, hippos, buffalo, zebra, lion & 9 baby lion cubs to much much more! The open air land cruiser was covered to protect you from the sun as well as comfortable seating. He had rain coats when needed, blankets as well as delicious drinks and snacks for our break times.

I can’t say enough about our safari experience and look forward to visiting again!

Track and trail is a family owned and run lodge with lot of warmth and soul to offer to their guests. The place is absolutely magical and reminds one of their own roots. Being in the wild and nature at the same time enjoying the comforts of a lodge. From the start of the booking phase Kirsten was extremely helpful and very professional. All my bookings were handled with ease and all my queries were answered patiently. We were welcomed very warmly by the gorgeous Chichi who is the heart and soul of the lodge. She greeted us with so much warmth and immediately showed us to our chalet. The chalet was absolutely neat and clean and perfect for our stay. Beds were cosy and very comfortable. The chalet overlooks the beautiful luangwa river which is brimming with life. We got to see many birds and hippo families with their new born calf. After our check in from long travels our host Chichi immediately welcomed us to the dining area for a sumptuous meal. With our bellies full of delicious food and the care given to us, we knew we are home for the next few days. Chichi ensured all our food choices were met. She starts work at the crack of dawn ensuring all her guests are well looked after and fed properly. She goes out of her way to know each of her guests and ensures we all are happy. She regularly checks on everyone to ask how our day was, how our drive was, how did we rest. Chi chi only rests once we all retire to our rooms. She is a wonderful warm host and it was an absolute pleasure getting to know her. She is always smiling even though she is juggling many things in a day. She actually reminded me of the super hero Wonder Woman. Big shout out to Team track and trail, Chi Chi, Albert and our wonderful ranger Effi. He took lot of efforts to show us all the animals we possibly could and accommodating all our requests so we could go home with exquisite pictures. We left the lodge with a heavy heart as we knew we are going to miss everything once we return to our busy city life. We will surely visit soon in the near future to enjoy the Zambian warmth and love shown to us. Thankyou for a wonderful trip.

The younger family members camped in an area restricted by electric fencing to keep put any predators, and the almost resident hippos and elephants, whereas I stayed in a very comfortable chalet with a considerable amount of living space. Full mosquito netting in place, and guides to walk you around the site in the dark to avoid any unwanted encounters. Good choice for breakfast and other meals, and game viewing options into South Luangwa the nearby national park. River frontage - and Frank the hippo ambles across the site back to his pool each morning. Raised pool to restrict usage to humans and a small gym. Take cash as power outages can impact on card acceptance

The lodge is situated on the banks of the river, 10 minutes drive from the entrance of the national park. We stayed two nights at the self catering hippo hide which was absolutely magical. You don’t even neer tomleave the porch to see all kinds of wildlife. Hippo Frank, elephants, giraffe, impala, monkeys, we have seen it all at the hippo hide.
We also stayed two nights at the campsite which was very nice as well.
The owners and staff are very nice and helpfull. We had Vic as a guide at game drives and he was very knowedgable.
The swimmingpool is very clean and although the restaurant is not cheap, the food is really really good.
The pricepoint of track and trail is right between the cheapest campsites and very expensive lodges.which makes it perfect ideal id you like a bit of luxury without breaking the bank. Best value for money in the Mfuwe area

In Trak and Trail Rivercamp you have beautiful lodges with great host and hostess and friendly and helpful staff. The cook conjures up delicious dishes on the table. The owner knows a lot about both nature and photography and tells enthusiastically about this. When you take a safari with him or one of his guides, it's garanteed you have a fantastic day with several animals en birds. It is highly recommended.

The camping facilities were situated on grass with each site having it's own braai, washing up facility and electricity power points. There are a couple of thatched structures for shade as well as a few trees. The ablution facilities were clean and they also offered a place to wash clothes. The lodge is situated on the edge of the Luangwa river with breathtaking views across the water from various areas including their elevated pool and loungers from where you can sit and watch the hippos and crocs right in front of you as well as the breathtaking sunsets at night. We ate at the restaurant one night and the food was excellent. The Zambezi bream is highly recommended. We also went on an afternoon/evening game drive into the South Luangwa National Park which was a highlight. We saw lots of interesting game and were also privileged to see a leopard in a tree. Our ranger was very knowledgeable not only about the flora and fauna but also on his general knowledge of the country which was wonderful as we were able to learn more about Zambia. Peter and Chi Chi were outstanding hosts and went above and beyond to help us when we had an emergency to deal with. We had a look at the chalets situated on the edge of the river and have decided that we will definitely go back and stay in one of them.

We stayed here for a week in a beautiful room, overlooking the Luangwa river. With the sound of the hippos in the background it was wonderful to sleep. The meals were also beautiful every time, not only to look at but also the taste was delicious.
We went out for 7 days with Peter twice a day, early in the morning and in the afternoon. He gave us the opportunity to learn to use our camera and spot beautiful animals with the right Light. So we were able to take some nice picture.
Our thanks go to,
Chi Chi and Peter and of course all the staff for a great stay
