My Family and I camped in the Croc Valley River Front Tents for 3 weeks over Dec 2014/Jan 2015.This was our 6th or 7th extended stay at Croc Valley. Even though I have previously reviewed the camp, our stay was so brilliant that we felt it warranted another review. The River Front tents are beautiful, everything works well and is excellently maintained. The views from the tents are incredible and there was always some interesting game to watch.

However the outstanding feature is the Staff and Management.Every single staff member treated us like family and nothing was too much trouble. The photos of Croc Valley sell the destination ....but cannot portray the atmosphere.Every staff member we met at the Camp was superbly helpful, well presented, and genuinely interested in "how your stay is going".The great vibe emanated by the staff extends from the Gardener, Bar Staff to the Guides,Chefs and Management.

This is truly a wonderful place to stay in South Luangwa.

We have already booked our next visit for 2015.

The Emerald Season is a great time to visit, the Camp is quiet and the Game Viewing is excellent.

I and a friend of mine spent 5 nights at Croc Valley Camp this August. I just wanted to see if there is a way to have a top notch safari experience in South Luangwa NP at a budget price. Yes, it is possible if you plan well your stay at this camp. By top notch safari experience I mean comfortable en suite accommodation (the a/c large tents were not available, so we took a self-contained chalet), great guide, full day game drives (so we were able to visit more remote areas of the park), private vehicle in good condition (not shared with other guests). We got everything that we wanted... Just make sure that you negotiate every possible aspect of the safari in advance.

This is a budget camp located on the bank of Luangwa River just outside the park's main gate. They cater to all sort of travelers - overlanders, self-drivers etc. There are accommodations at a different level of comfort - campground, small rooms, a dorm, self contained chalets and a/c Meru style en suite tents. Fabulous views towards the river (get up early for excellent sunrise photographs), good restaurant, bar, swimming pool. It is quite busy, especially during the high season, but does not feel overcrowded.

The chances are that that Herbert (the manager) will reply to your email (in timely manner) and arrange everything for you, including the transfers to camp if you need any. We landed at the airport in Lilongwe, Malawi at two in the morning and the driver was waiting for us. He will also take care of your needs while in camp. Just make sure that you agree on everything that you want in advance, so they will know and able to provide. Print it out, so there will not be any misunderstanding when you arrive (camp is busy and they might not remember every small detail).

The chalets are very spacious and comfortable with plenty of hot water and 24 h. electricity. There is also a fully equipped kitchen with refrigerator, stove, dishes, cutlery etc. Food and service are fine for this type of camp and for the price tag.

The most important for me aspects of the safari were excellent - very experienced and knowledgeable guide (Simon), Land Rover in superb mechanical condition and absolute freedom of choice for the game drives - we could do either full day drives with packed lunch (you will get a real bush lunch with a table and chairs) and visit more remote sections of the park, like Nsefu, for example (something very important, that compensates the fact that the camp is outside the gate) or morning and afternoon drives with the latter turning into a night drive (with an appointed spotter, who illuminates the wildlife with a strong torch light). Having a second person dealing with the torch is also an important aspect of the safari, I have done game drives where the guide is driving and illuminating with the light and it is just not the same. Simon is a freelancer (the camp hires him when they need to), so make sure that you request his services in advance. In general the quality of guiding in South Luangwa is very high, so perhaps you will not go wrong with other guide, too. I can guarantee for Simon (and I am very, very picky about safari gudies).

We enjoyed very much speaking to Vic (Victor) and spending time with him. I am not sure whether he is also a manager, for sure some sort of a boss at the camp.

I would recommend Croc Valley Camp as an excellent choice for an amazing safari in South Luangwa NP. For about a half to one third of the price for a camp inside the park, you will get a private vehicle (if you book one), full day game drives with an excellent guide, comfortable accommodation, great views from camp and good food. If you are in a very tight budget, you can stay at a small tent or room, share game drives with other guests for even less money and still have a great time.

Regarding the park - it is very difficult to me to decide if this is my favorite park / reserve in the whole of Africa. If it's not number one, it is among the first two / three on my list (I have visited 32 African wildlife parks and reserves, so have lots to compare with). One of the two best places on Earth for leopard (the other being Sabi Sand private reserve in S. Africa), the highest number of hippos and crocs on the continent, really wild (especially if you go far from the main gate), lots of lions, beautiful scenery, just a wildlife and nature lover dream.

Herbert, I know that most likely you will be reading this, thanks again for everything and special greetings to you and Vic! Really hope to have enough money and time to visit Croc Valley Camp again in the future!

An awesome place with crazy atmosphere and an indestructible bar to dance on. With drink trays called crocodiles and the staff doing the worm you're in for a helluva time!

Burgers are superb and the game viewing is almost unrivaled.

Did I mention that it's on the banks of one of the longest unaltered rivers in the world?

My wife and I and our two daughters aged 15 and 13 spent three fabulous weeks at Croc Valley from 18 sept until 10 oct 2012.

In 2008 we spent four months camping at Croc Valley and other camps in the valley near mfuwe We returned this year ( sept and oct 2012).Croc Valley is the best out of all the camp in the valley in all respects.

In summary our entire experience at CrocValley was superb.

In terms of location it has the best located camp sites anywhere in Mfuwe….right on the Luangwa River and a few minutes from the main entry gate into South Luangwa National Park.

The adjoining properties feel quite structured and have been built to squash in as much accommodation as possible. This is NOT the case at Croc Valley…it is very very spacious so You feel comfortable and private wherever you camp OR in one of the uber luxury tents en suite.

In terms of Game viewing…Croc Valley employ excellent guides and have really good game viewing vehicles. We did over twenty guided drives in the three weeks we just spent there….the croc valley guides are professional, and deserve their reputation as leaders in their field.

Accomodation and Bar and restaurant are all great BUT the outstanding aspect of Croc valley is the atmosphere. The people that run it and all the Staff are super friendly, welcoming and go out of their way to ensure that all your needs are met.

The Owners and Managers love hosting You and sharing the secrets of the valley.

Croc valley is the best option for visiting Luangwa valley and all the rave reviews on Tripadvisor are truly correct..

Try and spend afternoons in the hammocks gazing over the river or sipping a beer in the pool whilst the ellies cross the river in front of You.

We were at the Croc Valley Lodge for three nights in mid-December as part of our Malawian Style tour. The lodge is perfectly located on the river and a herd of elephants can be found right outside their gate. Our tour guide, Duncan, was especially impressive finding all of the major game that can be seen in the park. The accommodations were great. I can highly recommend the luxury tents. In the morning we got up and spent time just watching the wild life. The baboons at play were especially appealing to our children. Take very seriously their warning of not keeping food in your lodging. Elephants and hippos freely roam through the property and would not hesitate to break in to get a quick meal. I can fully recommend the lodge and if we are in the area ever again it will be our first choice again.

Hi guests to be!

This is the second time I write about Croc Valley, and like the first time ("we arrived in heaven, but please don't worry mum"), we were kindly received by the staff, who recognized and gave us a warm welcome
The road to SL has not changed much, it took us three hours with a small bus. They working on it, I expect it to be finished before my retirement.
The camp is somewhat bigger, more safari-tents that are well protected from the bigger animals that will visit you in the evening and night. Elephants come and graze so close by, you could actually touch them.
We came as a school group with full catering. We loved the meals, though some of the girls started worrying about their weight. The bar is quiet during the evening and night, the prices are very reasonable. One new problem we met: at the border you can only pay in dollars, but in the rest of Zambia, you're supposed to pay in Kwacha's, also at hte gate of the national park.
If you're a schoolgroup you're supposed to bring along a permit from the Zambian Wildlife, stating the dates that you'll visit, and this reduces the admission fees considerably. However, Zambian Wildlife is difficult to reach, or if by chance they answer your mail, they give a statement that you are very welcome in the park and welcome to pay the full fees. The website however states that (international) schools/students pay less, you can bring a copy from the webpage and a signed and stamped statement from your school. I advise to bring a few copies, however, this is not enough for Victoria Falls (advice: in summer, visit the Zimbabwe side, there is really not much to see on the Zambian side and they charge you 14 times more for your admission ticket as an international visitor). They did not accept the school statement, although their website has a special rate for schoolparties.
A third advice to lessen financial problems: the rates at the bank are best. Better than Forex.
If you go to an ATM, you'll need the visa logo, mastercard/maestro in general does not work.

The drives are adventurous, take at least two a day. This time we never saw lions, except at the entrance of Croc valley! That was also the one and only place I ever saw wild dogs chasing.
The camp is safe, guards are on duty.
Water can be taken from the tap. We werte not troubled by musquitoes.
We would visit again for sure!

I went in June to Croc Valley with my sister, her husband and my Mother. We really enjoyed our stay there.

In particular I would like to mention Liesl. A wonderful cheery, efficient and hard working host. Great personality to be in the tourism industry. Then of course is Billy and Herbert the best waiter ever! They were very very efficient and friendly. Herbert gave service with a smile new meaning. We enjoyed friendly conversations with both Billy and Herbert every day. The food also is very nice, particularly the Malva Pudding.

Most importantly I would like to mention, Duncan. A wonderful Guide with a great sense of humor and a lot of knowledge. We were very priveledged to see a pride of nine lions with Duncan. None of the other tour groups of that day got to see them and we were very lucky. Not to mention and very special show from a young leopard.

We stayed in luxury safari tents. They were beautifully situated by the river bank which allowed us a great view of the river and it's inhabitants. Watching the Elephants cross at twighlight was a highlight of the evenings. We also enjoyed sitting by our own personal campfire in front of out tent.

They were clean and comfortable. I really liked the outdoor bathrooms. Showering under the stars is very special.

I did however find the place was in need of maintainence. The tarps over soom of the buildings roofs did detract from the overall beauty. The bathrooms of the tents were gettting a little old and mildewy. The ceiling in the main bar has a lot of cob webs. These things however did not make our stay less enjoyable. They are minor things that I think are on the TO DO LIST. But Liesl seems a very busy person.

There are three new tents built up on cement. These are of a much higher standard, they even have coffee facilities in them. These were just built and used for other guests for the first time while we were there. We were actually jealous of these guests.

However Croc Valley is a great and I do think it is a great place to stay. The staff are very friendly and accomodating.

Croc Valley offers a great option to visit the amazing South Luangwa. Other camps in the area are quite costly, but at Croc Valley, because of their a la carte approach, you can pick and choose the options for your stay with a separate bar tab and therefore you can control your costs. I commend the owners because their approach has made South Luangwa accessible for those who need to control their costs. If you're looking for plush bedding, toiletries and luxury soak tubs, look elsewhere. If you're looking for a well managed camp with good value, clean and hygienic, friendly staff and owners, this is your camp.
When you choose the full board, the rates include all meals, laundry service and activities such as game drives and nature walks.

The manager Herbert and owner Shaw are reasonable and even when our plans changed, they accomodated our change requests. This is particularly important because you can only plan so much sitting in a foreign country.

Tip - They have the best guide and spotter on their payroll in the whole of South Lungwa and perhaps even Zambia. When on a game drive, insist on Simon being your guide and Jackson being the spotter. We've stayed in multiple camps that are many times more expensive, but Simon and Jackson are simply the best. You will be rewarded.

Tip - They have reasonable rates for private drives and for all day game drives. If you have Simon as your guide and a private drive, you're in for a treat.

We did a 3 night, full board package, staying in a riverside tent at Croc Valley. The tent was air conditioned which was great to cool the place for sleeping at night. The ensuite was spacious and clean. Plenty of hot water for showers. We did 3 safari drives and one walking safari at South Luangwa which is really close by. Our guides were knowledgable and we saw so many animals...... 3 leopard sightings, so many elephants, a herd of buffalo, zebras, hippos, giraffes, a lion, impalas, hyenas, crocs and so much more.
The food (included in our package) was good and plentiful. The staff were great and eager to please. Our beds were comfortable. There is a lovely bar which is a nice place to sit and enjoy a drink in the evenings. We felt we got good value for money. Hoping to return some day. Really enjoyed our time there.

Another amazing stay at Croc Valley Camp. Our third trip back to Croc Valley and it delivered everything we expected. Great service, great accommodation, great camp, amazing staff - we could not have been more impressed. Our thanks to Charl Beukes, the owner of Croc Valley, Herbert (camp manager), Thomas and Martin for their great service, with Herbert going out of his way to help - we were made to feel like returning family friends. Internet and WiFi connection was excellent and we were able to easily monitor our businesses from the privacy of our river tent accommodation.

Our stay was in the tented river camp (tent 5), located under the large tree just upstream of the main camp. With a private fireplace on the river bank we had our own private braai each evening (BBQ for those who don't know what a braai is), with fresh food provided by the Chef - food quality was superb. The odd interruption by elephant made for a great cooking experience.

The main attraction for us however is the fact the game wonders around camp all day, everyday. Hippo, elephant, antelope, baboon, vervets, mongeese to name a few wonder in and around the tents, particularly early evening and early morning - no fences or barriers - just simply magic and an absolute privilege to share their world in a non threatening environment. At no stage did any of the wildlife preset a threat in any way - if you treat the game with the respect they deserve you will be rewarded with incredible encounters.

Access to the park was great and our thanks again to Lazarous Banda and the ZAWA gate staff for their courteous service.

All in all we had a very special time at Croc valley and we could not recommend it highly enough to others wishing to visit.

We will be back again next year.

Grant & Wendy Lewthwaite
