read some negative reviews about the beach - thought that the beach was lovely, a small protected cove, with snorkeling ample space, food at restaurant was excellent, staff is outstanding, grounds are lovely and well maintained
Fairmont Orchid was our favorite Hawaii resort for years. We expected things to be different this year, likes face masks in hallways, elevators, restaurants and no free snorkeling gear. But the reality was masks required everywhere on hotel grounds, inside and outside, even with no people around. Very limited room service (you have to ask if you want garbage taken out or towels changed more often than once in 3 days). Restaurants inside main building are closed (beachside ones are available). All shops are closed. Half of the hotel that is closer to the beach is closed. No morning yoga classes. No drinking water by the pool or by the beach unless you rent a sunbed for the whole day. And, by the way, upon arrival, your are greeted with yet another tedious covid test paperwork scan instead of lei. All that really takes away from the experience. If I knew all that, I would have rented an airbnb place instead. Hopefully service will get better soon.…
Everything from our Philipino waitress to rock at the restaurant and the views were amazing. I loved the fact how serious they are about covid and they don’t nickel and dime you on everything. Great hotel
This is a gorgeous hotel. It's in a secluded location (not for you if you want to be in the middle of the action). There is a private beach in a sheltered cove, a natural rock makes the ocean very calm, great for kids. If you swim/snorkel to the rock, there are wild turtles swimming around beside you, since the adjacent beach is their protected habitat. There is also a wade in pool for toddlers and a nice main pool. There is a torch lighting ceremony at dusk.
We spent 9 night at the Fairmont Orchid celebrating a milestone birthday. It’s not our usual style of accommodation, as we typically opt for smaller locally owned or unique boutique resorts when we travel, but we had to book this with less than a week notice. Anyway, we picked the Fairmont because the pictures showed a beautiful beach, the room photos looked nice, and the pools looked great. The restaurants also had food that looked good, and our goal was to mostly relax, as we were supposed to be in French Polynesia this week but they closed the borders 72 hours before our flight. The hotel is large, with over 500 rooms, but during Covid, they are very low on occupancy, so that probably made it much nicer, since it isn’t crowded at all. Based on the lights at night, it appears they had the entire south tower closed. So, take that into consideration depending on when you travel. Also, some of the bars and restaurants are closed during covid, so my experience was limited to what was open. We opted for a Deluxe Oceanview room. We were unclear what this meant before we got there, but here is the scoop. The hotel is shaped like a U. Most of the rooms are considered ocean view, because you can technically see the ocean from the balcony, but it is at an angle. So, the location of your room matters a lot. If you don’t go for Deluxe, you’ll be on the bottom 3 floors, and your view is going to be limited or non-existent, especially if you are further back from the ocean. The “deluxe” means you are on floor 4 or 5, so your ocean view is a bit better, but again, if you are stuck further away from the ocean, you could be unhappy. This isn’t something you can really control. We were lucky, we had a great view from our balcony, as we were closer to the ocean on floor 4. There are very few rooms that are “ocean front” and they were very expensive. Seeing how they were fairly set back from the ocean, I don’t think they are worth the extra cost. If you go to a small resort in Maui or Kauai and do oceanfront, you are practically at the waters edge and that is worth it. The room was fine. It is a very nice hotel room. But, it’s just a hotel room. It is not unique in any way. This again is an area I am influenced by my experiences and preference for boutique hotels where they add little special touches, local art, rooms that vary from each other, and don’t have TV’s. I think my preference for unique comes from staying in many standard hotel rooms on business. When on vacation, I want the room to be special and I absolutely do not want a TV. Here at the Fairmont, the artwork is the normal designs you buy in bulk, the bed is adequate, and has standard white linens. The room had a desk a mini fridge and a closet. The bathroom was clean, you had a stand alone shower, plus a bathtub shower combo (which we used to hang swimsuits) a separate toilet area, and a double sink. The marble is showing it’s age and water damage, but that is just a nitpick. Service overall was very good. This is where my love of small properties starts to impact my ability to be objective. Service in a huge hotel is always attentive and timely, but you are one of so many guests, it lacks that very personal special feel you get at a small property where the employees seem genuinely excited you chose their property. However, when we needed something, they delivered. For example, we asked for yoga mats so we could exercise in our room, and they promptly brought them. Once we needed more Keurig coffee pods and a shower cap, and they came immediately. We spent a few days lounging at the pool, and one of the servers was excellent - attentive and friendly. But, the other one seemed overwhelmed and would get tunnel vision as he walked past you. We had to actually flag him down a few times to get drinks or the bill. One time, we ordered one drink and he brought two....and then charged us for two...was he clever, or incompetent? We ate at Browns twice for dinner and several mornings for breakfast. I have to say, dinner was good, but I was especially impressed with how many healthy delicious options they had for breakfast. Avocado Toast, Steel Cut Oatmeal, Açaí Bowls, Fruit plates, etc. We were happy, even though we were paying sky high prices for the location. It is a beautiful setting overlooking the beach. We were quite indulgent and went to the Spa With No Walls twice. On our first visit, we did the Oceanside deep tissue massages. The setting is spectacular all you can hear is the crashing of the waves. For covid, you have to wear your mask when face up, but when you are face down, they have folded the sheet in a way to provide a “mask” below your face, so you don’t have to wear your mask while face down. Also, to keep the therapists safe, the couple massages are done in separate cabanas. The next treatment we did was the lomi-lomi at the waterfall area. This area was serene and calming and the massage was very relaxing. The beach and snorkeling were fantastic. I loved that I could snorkel several times during a day, as it is my favorite thing to do. The pool was great, and they had an adult area so you could stay a bit away from the kids. The hot tub was nice and hot, we called it the “fire bath” since at most hotels you find lukewarm water, but not here. They were limiting the capacity to one family at a time, so I think they cranked up the heat to move people through quickly, but I liked it! Overall, I had a wonderful time at the Fairmont, but do think I would struggle if the property were at capacity. …
