Detailed Reviews
Loved the apartment we got. Very spacious with plenty of light. Rooms had air conditioning however common sitting area didn’t have air condition. There was a small spare room in the apartment which could have easily fit a washing machine and dryer and been converted to a laundry room. The kitchenette was fully equipped. Bathrooms were clean.
Food at the restaurant was very nice and staff very friendly especially Rohan who went out of his way to ensure our food would be served on time to us.
Set on a golf course and not far from many of the well known wineries

One of the largest and nicest rooms (207) I have stayed in for some time. Clean, modern and everything you need. Great complimentary coffee.
World class estate with so many facilities you can use.
Backs Restaurant:
Small but very affordable menu. Friendly staff.
Valley Restaurant: You can eat about the same breakfast for almost half the price at “Backs”
Negatives:
Golf: This must be the in the top 5 most expensive courses in South Africa to play as a affiliated member. Not really catering for South Africans. As a very avid golfer, I am not willing to pay that fee. Even the discounted rate if you stay in the hotel is exorbitant. 2/10
Access to the estate is shockingly slow and ineffective, especially for hotel staying/returning guests. Every day the same procedure to gain access. Code only valid for 1-day.
R40 for still water in a normal plastic bottle!
Price: 6/10
Staff:9/10
Location: 9/10
Facilities: 9/10
Overall: 8/10
As the estate is so large, a map of the location of all the facilities would be great.

Responded 18 Dec 2023
Dear NelusR I am delighted to have received such detailed feedback from you as guest feedback is imperative for business owners to understand where we are doing well and where there is room for improvement. I will share your great feedback on the hotel and its facilities with my team in order for them to continue to stay positive, motivated and keep exceeding all the guest's expectations. Complimentary water (both still and sparkling) in recycled glass bottles are available in your rooms in the fridges. Food and Beverage Facilities: The same goes for the business owners of the golf course and the outsourced food and beverage outlets. Glad that your experiences at both restaurants were positive and that the quality of the meals met your expectations. I will share your concern of the difference between meals at Pearl Valley Restaurant and Back's restaurant with the owners. Golf: We pride ourselves with top service, top facilities and a golf course currently ranked 3rd in the country. Every day we remind ourselves that we have to provide exceptional services and facilities to stay on par with one of our goals of being the top public accessible course in the country. We offer a bucket list experience and when you drive down the Jack Nicklaus Boulevard after days/ weeks/ months of anticipation, you are met with a team that is willing to do even better that what you expected. Access: Security is the prime USP of Pearl Valley Golf Residential Estate and that of the Greater Val de Vie Estate. Access control will remain a priority to ensure all residents, guests, staff and suppliers are safe at all times. Longer staying guests are able to have their biometrics temporarily registered, bar meeting strict terms and conditions. Apologies for the inconvenience it has caused, but it is for your own safety. I would rather apologies for inconvenience than having to explain an incident. We sincerely hope that we will have the pleasure in welcoming you back in the near future Merry Christmas and we hope you will have a memorable experience with your friends and family during these festive times. Kind regards Mynhardt de Jongh General Manager

My husband and I stayed here with 3 older teenage boys in Feb 22. We booked two rooms and had the most amazing week. We were trying to choose a location where the boys had freedom but access to activities and Pearl Valley was spot on there! Massive early mention to the superb STAFF team, particularly Monique who communicated so well with me prior to the trip and helped me book everything. Peter and Lisa on the reception desk were also so helpful, happy and engaging! The lady in the golf shop was very patient with my booking for the boys and last but not least, the wonderful lady who runs Backs deli by the hotel pool (sorry, trying to remember your name!) - super friendly and always willing to serve the best food and drink to the 5 of us! And the golf buggy shuttle drivers, they love their job, always waving and smiling!
Activities: we all had access to the fitness centre and the choice of two pools to relax beside, the boys played football and rugby on the field, we could walk/jog around the beautiful estate and then we also arranged golf lessons for the boys. Huge thanks to James Wade for his communication with me and patience coaching the boys!
Food: we could choose between the main Clubhouse restaurant and Backs Deli near our room. There were plenty of staff and a varied menu with specials each day. Easy food by the pool was a bonus, especially for the boys if we'd been out for the day. Backs also offer take out food and bakery items. If we were heading off early, the boys would grab a fresh smoothie and a pastry to keep them going in the car! All staff in both restaurants were happy and eager to please, delicious food and well priced.
Rooms: very well designed, consisted of a double bed (or twin), spacious bathroom, patio/balcony, small sofa in front of the TV, desk and then the selling point for me, a small kitchenette area where we could make hot drinks, throw a deli pizza in the oven and chill our drinks in the fridge. Anything we required never seemed a problem for the team at all.
ACCESS: this would be our only complaint - utterly ridiculous entry and exit procedures. Security needs to be tight, agreed, but the routine and rules changed daily and the staff at the gate blamed everyone else for the issues. The amount of time wasted trying to exit and enter was not acceptable and we can't understand why there is not a more efficient system in place.
Other than that point - we would highly recommend this hotel and would like to return next time we are in the area. Great for families, singles and couples alike!

Dear luckybear6 I am delighted to have received such a great comprehensive guest review. How can one not be proud of such a fantastic team that lives to exceeded guests expectations. Thank you for telling the world and now officially becoming the newest ambassador for Pearl Valley Hotel by Mantis. The security procedures, might seem extreme, but I would rather have all guests visiting the hotel and estate, to know that their are safeguarded than not. We truly hope that we will have another opportunity in the near future to welcome you back. Travel safely Kind regards Mynhardt de Jongh General Manager

We chose this hotel on the recommendation of a friend and because my husband has played golf here before.
The course is highly recommended for golf lovers, although we find the prices very high.
We have walked on similar tracks for a much more attractive rate in the last 2 weeks.
The hotel offers great comfort. So there's not much to complain about.
Rooms are spacious with sufficient (kitchen) facilities, but very noisy.
However, I missed the warmth (soul) in the hotel, a bit impersonal. It feels more like an apartment complex with a concierge. For those seeking anonymity, this is perfectly fine.
And with security at the entrance gate (a time-consuming job though) it feels very safe.
Finally, the lighting along the path to the rooms / small pool deserves attention. Several guests walked with flashlight (phone) to find their way.

All the great service and treatment we enjoyed from the Pearl Valley hotel and its wonderful staff was marred by the shocking manner in which the security staff operates the access and egress gates to the Estate. Our room was far from perfect, with a wet carpet and rising damp - but this was not an issue as the hotel staff were quick to attend to the issue with good grace. We stayed at the hotel for 3 nights for a beautiful celebratory weekend with close friends. Our stay was ruined by at least 7 unpleasant encounters we had with Thornburn Security staff who appeared to be antagonising my husband and I and our family members at the access and egress gates. Our lasting impression of this hotel is that of an extremely hostile, inefficient system which left us as paying Pearl Valley Hotel guests feeling vulnerable at the gate and victims of inefficient, antagonising, security personnel who appeared to be enjoying depriving us access or taking undue time to permit us access to the hotel premises. This ill treatment occurred on each and every interaction with them. When complaining about the security staff to various members of the hotel team - I was informed that there are “many complaints” about the security at the gates - “but nothing gets done”. Our family will never stay at the Pearl Valley Hotel again after the unpleasant experience dealing with Thornburn Security. Life is stressful enough without having to be antagonised on one’s holiday by irritating, inefficient security personnel who defeat the object of a welcoming and secure hospitality experience and environment.

Responded 26 Feb 2024
Dear Michelle d Thank you so much for taking the time to write the review. Utterly disappointing read. I am glad to hear that you and your family & friends enjoyed great service from my team. My sincerest apologies for the patch of wet carpet, due to a leak from the bath, which none of us were aware of. This unfortunate incident happened whilst the hotel was 100% occupied, hence we could not move you to another room, but glad my team could effectively dry the carpet with our industrial strength blowers. The bath was subsequently repaired. Reading your summary of how you are perceiving Pearl Valley Hotel, upsets me immensely, as the hotel is a service provider on the estate, just like Thornburn Security. "Our lasting impression of this hotel is that of an extremely hostile, inefficient system which left us as paying Pearl Valley Hotel guests feeling vulnerable at the gate and victims of inefficient, antagonising, security personnel." I have immediately made contact with the Estate Security Manager, and he is currently investigating your claims. No matter what the outcome of the investigation, I would like to guarantee you of my dedicated involvement into this matter as we are suffering the consequences of the wrong doings of other 3rd party suppliers. Your perception of the estate and the hotel are tainted, and I need to find a solution to the core issue. I hope you find it in your heart one day to return and experience the best of the greater estate and Pearl Valley Hotel by Mantis. Travel safely. We really enjoyed our visit to the Pear Valley hotel. Location is good, 45 mins from the airport and 20 mins to the wine farms. We were there to play golf and thoroughly enjoyed the course.
Our room was spacious and high quality with a lovely view of water with lots of ducks and birds around.
We didn’t experience any of the difficulties mentioned about the gatehouse - entry and exit was easy.
The main hotel restaurant has lots of different spaces and the varied menu worked at different times of the day. Breakfast was excellent, , sushi good for snacks or starters and lots of tasty mains. The restaurant staff were very friendly and good at what they do.
Overall it was very good and would return for the hotel and the golf.

Absolutely stunning estate with huge studio bedrooms and jaw dropping views. It is a bit of a walk from the rooms to the main building but you can get a buggy ride if you don't want to walk. Food is stunning and reasonable. Food in a similar place in the UK would be twice the price, at least. We had a curry evening one night and when I mentioned I didn't eat spicy food the chef went and made me a delicious non-spicy chicken curry. They couldn't do enough for you. Breakfast was buffet style but plenty of choice and well presented.

There is a main building and then many villas. Luckily when you call for a shuttle they are very quick. The room was quite nice and large. It had a kitchen with a mini fridge and stove (no microwave). Wifi was very good.
We were very close to Backs the small restaurant/deli by the pool. The staff in Backs were the most accommodating and friendly I have ever experienced. The food in the deli was not overpriced which was surprising, in fact it was shockingly inexpensive. On our last night we informed the lady’s we didn’t have time for breakfast the next day as we had an early drive and they brought us two to go bags filled with fruit and yogurt and some goodies for our drive. Such amazing service!
The restaurant at the main hotel was good. Food was good, servers were friendly. My only negative would be if you are playing golf plan on at least an hour and a quarter for breakfast. The service in the morning is brutally slow.
The golf course course was very good. It is in great condition and very playable.

A beautifully presented hotel with it’s own golf course. Stayed 2 nights in very large ground floor room. Very high quality furnishings and finish and luggage delivered by golf buggy. The staff do tend to drive at high speed around the paths so be aware of this when walk to and from the main hotel area. Food for such a large hotel was a little disappointing but as the rugby World Cup was going on at the same time the staff were a little busy. Would go back again just for the quality of the hotel but there as no doubt others in the area which may be a little smaller and more intimate it just depends what you are looking for in a hotel

This is a great place to stay especially if you're here for golf. The hotel rooms are in a separate block from the main clubhouse and facilities building a few minutes walk away. We were staying in one of the rooms on the first floor (608, I think) which had stunning views towards the first hole and practice ground with the mountains beyond. It had a fabulous view but I doubt whether all the rooms have such a good view. Those orientated the other direction might be looking over a building site. The room is pretty luxurious and fitted out with a small kitchen with a sink, cooker and fridge. However you are not encouraged to cook and no pots or pans are provided. This is a real shame as I'm sure many guests would love to dine without using room service. We couldn't get booked for the restaurant on one of the nights we stayed so had to use room service. This was fine but it would have been nice to be able to cook something ourselves.
A big thing to note about the hotel is that it is a card only facility. I accept that there are benefits to this but a big down side is that you can't charge things to your room and pay all in one transaction when checking out. Rather you have to pay by card everytime you buy something e.g. at the halfway house, at the pro shop when paying for your golf, at the spa, on getting room service. This all adds up to lots of credit card transactions. It's something that really annoyed me about staying at Pearl Valley.
Breakfast for guests is in the clubhouse restaurant but it's very confusing as you're not sure whats included. The whole breakfast dining experience was very awkward. It would be good idea to have a separate menu for guests.
