Majete Wildlife Reserve is one of the outstanding success stories of African conservation. Granted protected status in 1955, it became the subject of extensive poaching in the 1980s and 1990s. But a concerted joint effort since 2003 by the African Parks Network and the Malawi government - including the reintroduction of endangered species - has turned it into a model of sustainable development and biodiversity. In 2012 Majete became Malawi’s only Big Five Park. Located in the south of Malawi, Majete is an area of 70.000 hectares, part of Africa’s Great Rift Valley. The reserve is made up of mature miombo woodlands and granite topped hills that contrast with picturesque river valleys and lush riverine forest. For connoisseurs of wildlife many exciting encounters lie in store, with the chance to view many species including black rhino, leopard, lion, elephant, buffalo, eland, kudu, sable, suni, klipspringer, Lichtenstein’s hartebeest and zebra. Surrounded by 7,000 hectares of private concession, Mkulumadzi enjoys an idyllic location at the confluence of two rivers shaded by giant leadwood trees. It is the perfect combination of splendid isolation and first-class facilities. The lodge has eight superb chalets, each with spacious living quarters and private viewing deck. Guests can swim in our pool, dine under the stars, enjoy river cruises, game drives and walking safaris. Undiscovered by tourists, Majete is a true wilderness where every trip into the bush with our team of experienced guides will feel like an adventure. Guests arrive by a footbridge suspended over the Mkulumadzi River to discover a friendly welcome and many home comforts. The lodge has a restaurant with indoor and outdoor dining, a lounge and terrace, a bar and shop, swimming pool, viewing deck and a lapa for evening campfires. The perfect combination of luxury and isolation, Mkulumadzi boasts eight superb chalets set on the banks of the Shire River, shaded by giant leadwood trees and wild mangos. Each chalet has a spacious bedroom and lounge, ensuite bathroom, outdoor shower and private viewing deck where guests can sit back and marvel at the sights and sounds of the river. The bush chalets are luxurious and spacious with contemporary furnishings, some crafted from locally-sourced materials. They are flooded with natural light, giving you the sense of being in the forest without compromising your comfort and privacy. There is also an outdoor shower with a large rain shower where guests can enjoy the sensation of bathing under a waterfall. The shower is open to the surrounding bush with stone-clad walls for privacy. Each chalet has a sloping vegetated roof planted with indigenous species such as succulents, aloes, shrubs and grasses. This minimises their impact on the environment and keeps them cool in the hot season. Game drives and walking safaris are offered in the mornings and late afternoons, giving guests plenty of time to relax beside the pool, gaze at the resident bird population or listen to the grunt of hippos wallowing in the river. Afternoon tea is served on the terrace and on most nights dinner is served beneath the stars.

We visited Mkulumadzi in July, with our immediate family and two friends. From a practical and safety viewpoint (COVID-19), the staff are well trained in hygiene practices and we felt safe given all of the measure that had been put into place.

Practicalities aside, Mkulumadzi is quite simply stunning. Situated overlooking the Shire River, everywhere you turn there is a beautiful site to behold. The rooms are well appointed, chic, and incredibly comfortable. All of the staff went above and beyond to accommodate us and to make us feel happy and comfortable throughout our stay. Conrad and Reetha were impeccable hosts, and Mustafa, our guide, was knowledgeable and determined to give us the best possible safari experience.

We will, without a doubt, be returning soon not only because we had an incredible stay, but also to help support our local tourism industry during this challenging time.

Dear KatL Thank you for taking the time to post another lovely review! So glad to hear you had a great time at Mkulumadzi Lodge and that you were happy with our new COVID-19 procedures that are now in place. It is a challenge adjusting to the ever-changing 'new normal', so it's very encouraging to receive such comments. Conrad, Retha and the rest of the team will also be so pleased to hear you were happy with your time with us and i will also be sure to pass on your kind feedback to Mustafa! During these trying times, it is so reassuring to receive such wonderful feedback as well as the repeat business from you! We really do appreciate it Kat! Looking forward to seeing you again soon! Take care and stay safe! Steph & the RPS Team

We had four wonderful nights at this camp in September 2022. Our lodge was situated with glorious view of where the Mkulumadzi River joins the Shire. The water level was quite low at this time which meant numerous animals came just below our lodge to drink. The downside of the low water was we were unable to have any boat safaris. The lodge itself was lovely and comfortable, and we slept each night with the canvas flaps open.
The staff were all very friendly and helpful, and most efficient, nothing was too much trouble. Food was amazing, because of its location there is a choice from a small menu, but everything we had was delicious. The management made themselves available at various times of our stay, and were very friendly and informative.
The area around the swimming pool and main decking was badly damaged by the storm that Malawi suffered in February, but we couldn’t tell as it had all been repaired to a high standard.
We had morning and afternoon game drives on each of our days, and while the game is not as plentiful as other African parks what you find is very rewarding. We spotted lions, elephants, giraffes etc. as well as numerous types of antelope. Rhino are present but we didn’t spot any. Our guide Ennison was excellent and a encyclopaedia of knowledge.
We enjoyed our stay immensely and thoroughly recommend it.

Dear Tenderah Thank you for another wonderful review about your time with us! We are chuffed to hear you enjoyed Mkulumadzi so much but are very sorry you couldnt experience the boat safaris as they are indeed sorely missed. We hope that did not detract too much from your stay. The team will be thrilled to read your lovely review and i will be sure to pass it on to them! We also appreciate your comments about the decking as the team worked long and hard on this so they will be pleased to know their hard work has not gone unnoticed by guests. We hope you will be back in Malawi again one day and will pay us a visit. Take care Steph & the RPS Team

October is a hot month in Majete reserve, with temperatures over 40C, so I was very grateful for one special feature of Mkulumadzi - the low energy a/c system that cools the interior of the mosquito net. A lifesaver for both night time and afternoon naps.

We had a warm welcome from the staff including the management team Noline and Toni. The most special feature of the lodge is its location with the view of the cascading Shire river, its sound always in the background. The access via a long suspension footbridge is special and overall standards are just as high as at the Robin Pope properties in Zambia.

Majete has thick bush even in the dry season, so we did not see large numbers of animals, but happy to spot leopard and a Mozambique spitting cobra on a night drive.

The reserve is on a good path under management of African Parks, with well graded roads. It is a bit similar to Nkhotakota reserve, which I also recently reviewed - a relaxing wilderness destination with low visitor numbers. It would be great to be able to walk as there are plenty of shady trees, but there is a current lack of rangers to escort. Next time!

Dear Donncha Thank you for taking the time to write a review about your recent stay at Mkulumadzi Lodge! I'm really glad you enjoyed your time there. October is indeed a scorcher so i'm happy you had some respite from the heat with our Evening Breeze cooling system. It is indeed a shame that we cannot offer walking safaris for now but we hope that will change in the near future as Majete is an incredible park to explore on foot! I will be sure to pass on your lovely feedback to the rest of the team at Mkulumadzi Lodge who will be thrilled to hear you enjoyed your time with them. Best wishes Steph and the RPS Team

We have been in Malawi for some time now and visited many places and we were wondering how we missed this beautiful place. Right from the time we alighted at the car park till time we left the place, the hospitality of the team needs special mention.
Conrad and Retha who are in charge of the beautiful place has done a wonderful job in ensuring that we were attended to even the smallest requirements. The place was very neat, tidy and COVID-19 measures were well taken care. A special thanks to the staff who was keeping the place clean and sanitized as and when guests will vacate their chairs, sofas. Mustafa, who was our guide on the drives is very knowledgeable on the birds and animals, thanks to him for information and making the trip enjoyable for our kids. The food was excellent, 2 course lunch and 3 course dinner along with tasty snacks on the drives made our stay very comfortable. A special thanks to cook, Thomas and his colleague Jaffery. The staff, Ismail and Shadrek were very helpful during the stay.

After nearly 5 years in Malawi we eventually spent a weekend at Mkulumadzi Lodge, why did we wait so long? Set in between the Mkulumadzi river and Shire River where they join each other is a perfect and beautiful location for the lodge. The accomodation at the lodge looks out onto the Shire River where there is often great views of Elephants, Buffalo, Hippos, crocodiles and many other animals. The service provided by the team at Mkulumadzi was excellent. The team there make your weekend special. Covid 19 is taken very seriously at Mkulumadzi with some of the best procedures in place that I have observed in Malawi. Thank you for a great weekend to the entire team at Mkulumadzi.

As a so called high-end, luxury lodge we felt disrespected. I had asked many times to stay at the lodge on my wife's birthday which was on the 13th of July. But reservations said NO. After we paid for the week to follow 16th to 19th as that was the only option. Later Robin Pope Safaris sends a flyer that the lodge is opened that weekend. First (as I have paid by then) should have offered us the first choice before advertising it on social media.

We stayed here for 2 nights as a family of 4 in the biggest chalet. This is a great room, a living room in the middle with two very plush ensuite bedrooms. The front of the chalet rolls up and gives you a great view of the river rushing away through the valley. Extremely comfortable and perfect for kids as plenty of space to spread out.

This camp is great, the entrance is pretty spectacular with the rope bridge over the river, and it occupies a lovely spot overlooking the river. Crocs and antelope etc very easily seen from breakfast

Like all Robin Pope places, the staff and guides are fantastic, always extremely helpful and try their best to make your stay as good as possible. From stationing a guard at our chalet once the kids were asleep so we could have dinner by ourselves, to packing a packed dinner for the kids when we were on our drives, they're very flexible.

Majete is a beautiful park with great landscapes and amazing wildlife. Getting back to Mkhulumadzi every evening for a G&T made it all the better

Another long but comfortable trip south east to the lodge dropping down from Blantyre into the Shire valley. In the middle of the national park lies Mkulumadzi lodge. Another adventure to get to the lodge via the swinging suspension bridge over the river but very safe and all the luggage was carried across by the staff. The view across the river from the main dining area was exceptional and made even better by the quality of the food, once again, served to us. We were the only guests for the first couple of nights but that gave us a good chance to chat to all the very friendly staff and enjoy the sounds of the river.
We were located in room 4 which was absolutely lovely, again looking over the river and the antelope who regularly visited. Because of the heat, it seemed a long way from the reception but in reality it wasn't! Still we avoided going back to the room when we could.
The general game viewing is rather restricted because of the landscape compared with the other parks which are much more open but this is offset by visiting several well built hides. That said, I've never seen a Pangolin or a Hartebeest in the wild before...thanks Arran and wild dog behaviour can be difficult to see in some areas of Africa ,,,thanks Mali. Otherwise there were elephant, giraffes, many antelope but, unfortunately no rhino.
That's safari for you!
A great end to our trip and our thanks to all the staff we met at all the Robin Pope lodges who made the whole trip exceptional and will, no doubt, do the same for you, if you go.

Dear Paul Thank you for taking the time to write this lovely account of your stay at Mkulumadzi Lodge! We're delighted to hear you enjoyed all aspects of the lodge, from the bridge right down to the food! As you say, the wildlife can be a little quieter than other parks but wow, a pangolin sighting is a real extraordinary event, so glad you experienced this and would love to hear more about it! It does get pretty toasty in November so understand why the room felt far away! I will be sure to pass on your kind words to Mali, Thomas the chef and the rest of the Mkulumadzi Team who will be very happy to know that you appreciated their hospitality! We hope to see you back at Mkulumadzi one day soon...maybe you might spot the elusive rhino :) Till then take care Steph & the RPS Team

Wow, What an amazing visit to the stupendous Mkulumadzi in the Majete Wildlife Reserve. Brilliantly hosted by Toni and Noleen this incredible lodge, flanked by the thunderous Shire and Mkulumadzi rivers, is a must visit for any safari enthusiast and is up there with any bush lodge i have been to in Africa ( which is quite a few... ). The lodge is made by the staff, led by Toni and Noleen. Our guide, Mali, ably assisted by Tobias, was a gem. A proud Malawian and hugely knowledgeable, he was ever patient with my 12 and 10 year old children. Patrick and Judah and the chef Thomas produced and served incredible meals in the bush ( including a lifetime best lemon meringue pie ). And the reserve itself is just stunning. It is wild bush and animal sightings are hard earned but so worthwhile, including great Lion and elephant experiences and an incredible viewing of 2 leopard together at night. The reserve is a tribute to the enormous hard work of Africa Parks and it is such a priviledge to be able to enjoy it, whilst seeing a mere handful of other tourists, amid the comfort and understated luxury of Mkulumadzi.

We spent two nights enjoying the experience of this property and the surrounding reserve. Our arrival was by small plane at the bush airstrip. JB was there to meet us and took care of us during our stay for game drives and sorting registration at the main park entrance. The lodge was welcoming and after navigating the suspension bridge and another short 4WD transit we were welcomed at the main pavilion. Spacious and well kept we were given an introduction and shown to our chalet. The roar of the river outside is a welcome sound and other park noises make you feel isolated from other guests. We were in number 6 which is a bit of a walk over uneven terrain. Not difficult but be aware that it isn't a smooth level path. The room was well stocked and clean.
A few items to note: There is no aircon but the walls are opened during the day and there are ceiling fans. They have a sleep sock aircon over the bed which is a fabric "sock" over the center of the bed and an aircon blows cool air into it and that drifts down over you in the bed to keep you cool. I've never seen it anywhere else but it was a savior for our stay as the days and nights were quite warm and would have been uncomfortable otherwise. There were also a great many insects if you left any lights on before the walls were closed off. Water and everything else is provided upon request, the bathroom was very large and the shower was outdoors with a privacy wall.
The main dining area was comfortable and had plenty of seating. We were able to enjoy a private couples dinner by the pool one evening which was a treat. The pool was a welcome cooling spot during the heat of the day. It was in full sun for a time but shade is available under umbrellas or by trees after an hour or so.
The safari drives were a highlight. There are elephant, lion, cape buffalo, giraffe, impala and many bird species along with hippo that we saw. It is more bush than open savannah so you get fleeting glances and rely on the guide to know where to track and observe. A low light telephoto is your best lens option to get inside the cover and snap a shot. Many of the game animals are repopulated after intense poaching according to the guide. It's nice to see them adapting and thriving.
Overall a nice experience. This was part of a trip for us to experience a different style of safari from previous trips and it did not disappoint. Highly recommended if you are in the area.

Dear Safariholic, Thank you for your question. Many of our guests enjoy chalet 1 because it is right at the far end of the lodge and therefore is located at the confluence of the Shire river and Mkulumadzi river, however since you will be visiting in September, the water levels will be very low with the Mkulumadzi having dried out. Having said this, each and every one of our rooms are well appointed and all have equally spectacular views of the river and wilderness around it with lovely protruding decks which are merged into the surroundings. The rooms all overlook the Shire river. I hope this has helped :) All the best Gabriella
