Let me begin by saying that I can't imagine a more perfect place to have your honeymoon than The Moon Houses in Shela on Lamu island. We felt totally spoilt, had time to relax and bond and there were enough activities to keep us occupied.

The Moon Houses is absolutely stunning, the service is great and the little village of Shela is scenic, safe and the people friendly. For a honeymoon I definitely recommend Betty's suite. It's lovely, spacious and you have your own private infinity pool. But the other houses also look stunning, and each has its own charm. We spent a couple of days just laying around swimming, sleeping and reading - don't we all need that after the stress of a wedding!

You could easily just stay at The Moon Houses the whole time. You have your own cook, who cooks your selection from a list of recommended meals. We asked for light, healthy food and he wowed us with grilled fish, a variety of fruit and vegetables, coconut rice and fruit sorbets to die for. Don't think for a second you can't go completely decadent, though. He also make great curries, cakes, samosas and decadent seafood platters. You also have your own steward who takes care of everything you're too relaxed to do, from serving your food to providing towels, water, turning down your bed and even showing you around the village if you need directions. Saleem was our cook and Tom our steward, and they were both amazing.

I did yoga (there are two studios in town or you could have a teacher come to The Moon Houses for a private training session if you prefer). My husband kite-surfed, and there are many other water sports you can choose from. Ask Nina (manager) to make suggestions and arrangements. She has great tips for things to do and places to go. It seemed like there was nothing she couldn't organise. She recommended Betty (0720263931) for massage and other therapies for example. Betty is simply amazing. She does a very relaxing, detoxifying full body massage that left me gaga for hours afterwards ... try it. Again, you don't have to lift a finger - Nina will arrange everything for you.

We had no lack of activities. We did two snorkeling trips, both included sailing on a dow and lunch, water and snacks. The food was amazing. My husband raved about the fish, marinated and then grilled over coals right there on the dow. I'm a vegetarian and they catered for me with salad, curry and badgia - a local snack made from lentils and veg. The family that took us sailing was Abdul (0711125359) and his sons Sultan and Mu'al. They were all friendly, knowledgeable and made each of the 3 trips we took with them very special (including decorating the dow with flowers for the sunset trip!). By the way, my husband had snorkled before but I hadn't. He taught me, but if you need guidance, Sultan can go in with you and they have goggles, snorkles and flippers for hire. The water is wonderfully warm and safe.

I think we barely scraped the surface of what one can do, so remember to ask Nina for the full activities list so you don't miss out.

In conclusion, The Moon Houses is fabulous for any holiday, with or without kids, but from personal experience I can tell you it can't be beaten for a romantic honeymoon spot. It has all the luxury and beauty of an island resort holiday, but it doesn't feel like you've bought an 'off the shelf' package holiday.

And finally, I have to emphasise that it's totally safe and the people are very friendly. Do not be put off by the uninformed generalisations published by some consulates. Shela is a small village on the Island of Lamu in the Lamu district. Don't be mislead by misinformation. Trust me, it's safer than New York, London or Cape Town :)

We stayed at Full Moon house. The style, design and decor at the house is outstanding. As a matter of fact all the Moon houses have beautiful architecture. The stairways and bridges add to the uniqueness of the place.

The outdoor areas and balconies are spacious, comfortable and the breeze was more than welcome. We enjoyed every moment at the house. Though the beach is not brilliant, the house makes up for it. The pool area is charming and peaceful.

The luxury of being able to sleep at night with open doors with the sound of the sea is not something we have had before.

Above all, the staff are very professional, well trained, well spoken. The food was incredible. For seafood lovers, it is a paradise. Joseph and his crew prepare food that is better than many restaurants.

Our jaws dropped when we first entered through the large wooden door of Kiwandini House, .
What a lovely, historic and charming villa!
Like something out of a dream.
An open-air dining room invites you to a garden with pool and lounging area.
Our apartment was thoughtfully designed with all kinds of interesting spaces, lovingly decorated with antiques and locally made pieces.
Truly an exotic atmosphere, yet laid-back and comfortable, like you're staying with old friends.
The very romanic bedroom, with multiple large shutters overlooks both the garden and the sea and the terraces (3) allow for a view over the small port and all it's dhows and fishing boats.
Meals are tailored to your individual tastes and nearby restaurants make it easy to opt for lunch or dinner out.
A laid-back but professional and attentive staff make sure you feel like royalty.

We stayed at Betty's Suite for three nights in September. The location, view, private pool, fantastic service made this a marvelous choice. The cook prepared gourmet style meals with beautiful presentations. We had told them prior to arrival that we favored spicy food and they really delivered. We only paid for the food, for which we were provided accounting.
the only negative is not about Betty's Suite, but Lamutown itself. Save yourself a trip and just enjoy Shela. Lamutown reminds me of what a medieval village would resemble and not the good parts.
But back to Betty's suite: we had just been on safari and were looking for r & r. This is the perfect place! Highly recommend.

We were welcomed by the house staff very warmly who took us on a small tour of the house and led us to Bettys' Suite on the first floor. Our eyes danced around in delight to see the infinity pool, all to ourselves and that was a real treat. We came to relax and unwind, and that is exactly what happened. It was off-season so a lot of the other hotels were closed, but we were OVER THE MOON with our luxury accommodation. All the ammentities are available in the bathroom from soap, shampoo, and lotion, and the sunk in bath with sea views was an experience not to be missed, as was the rain shower.
As much as I hesitate to say, the food could have been better and so could the selection, as it was very minimum, there was no suggestion menu, we were told that only a small selection was available, I presumed because it may have unavailable at this time of the year. We brought our own brown bread, butter, snacks, cheese and condiments as that is unavailable in Lamu, but we forgot to bring Jam. The menu consisted of coconut rice, and either crab, fish or prawns, but lacked in flavour, once we had a salad, and cooked vegetables, other times it came without, and we had to ask especially for it to be brought to the table, and many times, we were not given fruit, only on the first day dinner and breakfast the next day. We were inundated with flies and unfortunately we both fell sick, I found a cooked fly in my food, which is a pity, however due to the heavy rains, we were told that this was the case. The table decor was always so creatively done with fresh flower blooms and foliage, and on the first night, they made a beautiful brooch out of Jasmine for me, and fashioned a love heart in the middle, what a lovely and thoughtful touch! Everything else was absolutely divine. Nina the manger is exceptional and was there to welcome us, say goodbye and at hand for anything we needed. Our butler was a very polite man as was the chef. Thank you Moon Houses.....Will we return, I would say a BIG YES!!

Oh, yeah - "paradise". Such a cliche... Yet, a very apt description once you arrive and drop the bags and jump into your very own pool. We had the the room with the infinity pool and the view (see photo). We couldn't have been happier with our experience. The location allows you a privileged vantage to watch the maritime bustle on the waterfront. The cook whips up great meals and the service staff is very attentive. It is indeed a bit of paradise, so enjoy it while you can!

Perfect stay at the Full Moon House! We woke up to a panoramic vue on the ocean, enjoyed the sunset and the full moon on the balkony and rooftop!

We were warmly welcomed by the staff - the Chef and his assistant and waiter - who offered us the many various food options. We could chose anything in the menu - seafood, fish, local dishes and even more european dishes - and the Chef would prepare anything with fresh local products. Every meal was such a great experience !

The eating area and the little garden and pool space are beautifully decorated with traditional pieces and art. There’s also a massage, manicure/pedicure service available.

The staff was so sincerely kind, that it made our experience even more beautiful!

We hope to visit again really soon!

We stayed in the Full Moon House and it was just perfect. We were 2 families with kids and we all had a fantastic time relaxing by the pool, going down to the beach, taking boat trips and enjoying the superb seafood prepared by chef Joseph. The whole team of staff were brilliant and made our stay very enjoyable.

Just what the doctor ordered. Five days of perfect seafood, weather and accommodation. Nina provided great customer service and connected us with wonderful excursions (sunset cruise, ancient ruin tour and sea turtles hatching), Tom kept us tidy and supplied and chef Francis is amazing....really amazing. Beautiful, romantic and SAFE housing, Long Beach walks, just perfect. It's the place to stay and relax.

We stayed at the Full Moon House which is a Beautiful house in a very nice location in Shela. From the time of making the booking to our stay there all the staff were absolutely brilliant and so friendly. Dickson went out of his way to make sure we were comfortable did all the running around for us and always had a smile on his face. The chef was very good too he served us really tasty food and his passion fruit mousse was soooo good.
The bedrooms are big, very clean and all three rooms have a stunning view of the ocean... and you can sleep with the doors wide open and feel the sea breeze at night.....stunning!!
The house has great ambiance &decor... it is just beautiful!
