Kokoriba was a bit of a mixed bag. It has great potential for birding and relaxing in peaceful bushveld surrounds - if only the management would enforce their own rules consistently, or if one happens to visit when all other occupiers act like considerate people.

On the negative side:

We booked for two nights in the Sable luxury tents on the spur of the moment and arrived after 19:00 on a Friday night. Around 22:00, some wingnuts a distance away started belting out their collection of mostly Theuns and Juanita tunes. Save for a few short intervals, it lasted until almost midnight. I tried to call management but my cellphone was playing up. Apart from another song later played about rivers full of "brandewyn", I suspect the real stuff was flowing strongly, since many of the songs played were interrupted halfway and new ones started without the current one being played even nearing its end.

The next morning we went to Reception to make payment for our stay, since it closed before we arrived on Friday. I asked the acting manager on duty (Martie) about their own rules - which are displayed on boards everywhere and even on the entry permit - and which states amongst other, "No loud music after 22:00". What I wanted to establish was whether the rules would be enforced that Saturday night: could she guarantee us peace and quiet? After all, we came to enjoy the bushveld atmosphere, or else we would have gone to Oppikoppi or Afrikaburn for music in the bush. Martie said there was a group booking (some rich farmers, we were told) in the Makoro section (which can sleep 35 people) and it is "always difficult" with a group, but she would talk to them and revert back to us. I explained that if the noise was going to recur I would rather pay for Friday night only and vacate immediately, after all what was there to discuss with the rowdy bunch?

Martie phoned later on and reported that she addressed the problem, but could not guarantee how they would behave after 22:00. She asked us not to leave, but if we did, we would not be charged for Friday night. We looked at some options nearby but decided to stick it out. The music in the group's lapa this time ceased at 22:00 and we could enjoy a good night's rest.

The positives?

There are plenty to mention. To start with, the staff are friendly and greet when meeting you anywhere on the premises. The facilities are clean and well-maintained, our braai place was cleaned every morning and so was the bin emptied. Our tent was built on a cement platform, with a well-equipped kitchen at the open outside part, and air-con inside the sleeping area. The bathroom unit was very modern, with both bath and shower installed. There was even a small floodlight fixed to a tree next to the braai place, complete with the light switch on the trunk, very handy when braaing, and to turn off to stare at the burning fire in darkness. Suggestion: Since there are no cupboards in the tent, how about some hooks in the bathroom to hang clothes on?

In the mornings and also at sunset the birds start calling and the distinctive sound of the Crested Francolin is heard everywhere - it is not unlike a barrow wheel that needs oil. There are lots of birds around, most visible are crested francolins, go-away birds and the comical African hornbills. One can go on walks or game drives in the reserve itself, and during our strolls we saw giraffe, impala and some other antelope. We also saw unknown birds on our walks and in the trees around our campsite, but had no proper equipment with us to zoom in for a decent picture.

We will visit again, but this time book in on a Sunday afternoon (definitely out of school holiday season), when the madding crowd is unlikely to make music, and then stay until midweek. There are various forms of accomodation available, with different styles and groups of chalets and apartments. There is a restaurant and shop with firewood, soft drinks and dry goods and also three swimming pools. Oh, and did we mention the entertaining tree squirrels?

We have been regular visitors to Kokoriba for many years. Thwy underwent a managerial change anditbwas comforting to see the place was upgraded withoutloosing the essece of what makes it so special. A piece of heaven in the bush. Hot, peaceful, well kept and beautiful. A place to reconnect with self and family. Well worth a visit.

On the 22 October 2023 My wife son and I booked inat the Reserve just past 7pm at the Kokoriba Game Reserve. We went to the shale and unpacked our things in to the cubert's and the fridge. Saturday morning the 23 October 2023 my wife woke up to make us some coffee and when she took the milk out of the fridge the milk was off i then told my wife not to worry about it it must have been the shop where we bought the milk fault. Then my Family and i went to the water park until 4/5 Pm we then went back to the shale and my wife wanted to treat me with a glass of champagne and some snacks that was in the fridge but when she took them out all the items in the fridge went Bad. We then phoned the office and they said that it would be replaced. When we spoke to the management a lady with blonde hair she made people with blonde hair look bad because she told me that the fridge broke because we put hot Milk, yogurt etc. into the fridge. that same lady's husband he is also a manager we had a argument about people walking around with open firearms and as far as I know it is against the law. Monday morning I called the head office in Pretoria where we booked our stay. and their response was that it was my fault because we did not check if the fridge was in working condition. I don't have anything against Kokoriba Game Reserve it is a lovely Well maintained and clean place. I can say the same about the restaurant. The white male manager was never to be found and when you did find him he was either in the swimming pool or he was in town away from the reserve.

If you want to break away and do not want to drive too far this is the place to go to.
We as a family stayed in two 4 bed chalets which suited us perfect as it is situated adjacent to each other.
The braai facility is under cover which is a great plus if it rains.

My parents visited the park for my mother's birthday and they always speak of such admiration and the highest praise. They often visit. As it was my mother's birthday, I called the admin office to ask for a special request. I spoke to Zelme Jacobs and she and Izelle Smith arranged for a beautiful card, chocolate and the invitation to dinner, this was delivered with so much love. The evening was planned with the utmost hospitality and my mother had the most wonderful time. They were served by lovely Wilma and she further perfected their evening. People like them are the salt of the earth and delight the world around us. They make a great place perfect!!!

We did not have one peaceful night at Kokoriba. It was like a party camp. The rules state clearly no music. It was unbearable with all the loud music. We phoned the manager constantly about the noise but it seems there are no rules implemented at Kokoriba. It's a lovely place but they they will never see us again. We were told by the manager that he can't tell people to switch their music off.....but it's stipulated in the rules. This is a game reserve.....but if you want to party and play loud music that is the place to go. Very disappointed with their management. And numerous couples complaint about the noise.

We booked into this lodge for Saturday and Sunday night. On a Sunday the office shuts at 2pm so you are not able to book any activities after 1pm on a Sunday, which includes game drives, putt putt, etc. The restaurant, shop and bar also closes. When we originally booked we were not told about this at all. We spoke to other guests who were also staying over the Sunday night and they were also disgusted with this arrangement. As a result we left at 1pm on the Sunday instead of staying over. Us and others will be contacting the management of this Lodge to put in complaints and I will also be trying to get my 1 nights stay refunded. Be warned.

A rule they make you sogn to is "total silance is expected after 10pm." This place is loud as hell with all the music. No one to stop them. So much for a family place. My baby boy cannot sleep with all the noize
