Detailed Reviews
We had 3 days to drive from Barcelona to Madrid and see something off the beaten track.
Firstly let me say that the mountains and villages of Teruel were beautiful beyond our expectations. In this part of Spain the views are spectacular and change as you drive over each crest. The drive to La AlquerÃa was not a short one, but well worth it. The village itself is small and quiet at this time of year. Most of the sympathetic renovations are courtesy of part time residents from Madrid or Valencia. There is just one friendly local bar and a couple of restaurants.
The hotel La AlquerÃa was wonderful (their website doesn't lie!!). From the warm welcome of the hosts, to the charming rooms and the most spectacular dinner featuring local cuisine this is a stay that you won't forget.
The owners speak good English, but be patient as they don't get much practice, this place is a Spanish secret.
So take the drive from Barcelona or Valencia, allow enough time for a long walk and enjoy.

We used TripAdvisor to find this hotel and were rewarded with excellence rarely found in any hotel - let alone one in delightful rural Spain.
Jose and Clara made us really welcome and the meals were exceptional. Clara cooks from the heart and its shows and tastes!
The food presentation was of a high order. A spotless room simply added to everything that was very postive about La Alqueria.
Jose helped with local highlights and we stumbled across a weeding nearby that confirmed that we were in welcoming and peaceful rural Spain.
A great find.
Beware if the sat nav tries to take you through the village rather than to "centro urbano - town centre". The sat nav route is OK if on foot but no good for driving!

Second visit to Jose & Clara and they made us very welcome again. The food and wine were superb and Jose made our meals a great experience. Clara's cooking was delicious and her four desserts to share was a lovely end to each of our 3 evenings. Rafales is a beautiful village and being part of something from the 1570,s is amazing. The people of the village are very friendly and the bar next door is very atmospheric. The area of Aragon is very beautiful and a hidden gem.

We arrived on 3 motorcycles, wet and tired, to be met by Jose, with a beaming smile and warm welcome. The hotel is off the beaten track in a small, ancient Spanish village reached by winding, hairpin roads and through stunning countryside. The hotel is superb, modern and up to date. Our rooms - the family suite of two bedrooms and a shared bathroom - were amazing, smart, well-equipped and comfortable. Clara's cooking is the best - the pig cheeks were fantastic, and the wine chosen by Jose just kept flowing. We stayed for an extra night and spent a day following the route Jose gave us of the Teruel area, which should not be missed, it is one of the most beautiful and historic parts of Spain. Our second evening was one we shared with the village, celebrating a First Communion in the square outside the Hotel which was wonderful.
A jewel in Spain - thank you Jose and Clara, you were the highlight of our 3 week trip!!

Hi guys!!! Thanks for remember us, your positive opinion and support. We will continue in the hard labour to present to the rest of the planet this region of Matarraña / Matarranya here in this little corner of Teruel. We send you, and of course all our friends and customers from Tripadvisor, a smile from Pablo, kisses from Clara and a big hug from me. Jose PD. Excuse my poor english, you know... ;-)

My gal and I happened through Teruel in May. Sage and rosemary in bloom -- overpowering. Precipitous roads that make you say "mama!" Waterfalls, monasteries perched on impossibly tall buttes, good cheap wine.
And in the small but ancient rural village of Rafales, La Alqueria, run by Jose and Clara. He's an open-hearted guide to the sites and spirits of the area. The excellence of Clara's dinners, using local meats and produce, is inarguable. If pig cheeks are on the menu, have them. Her desserts and breakfast pastries (fresh bunuelos and tarts) will blow your groggy mind. We suspect she spent some time in Paris. Place is clean and has charm, right on the central plaza of the village where children play next to the 13th century church and ever-burbling spring.

i came across the reviews on this hotel by accident, was impressed by the report and was not disappointed. Jose is the perfect host, his hotel is first class and this is matched by the cooking of his wife in their restaurant. He will go out of his way to make your stay everything you want it to be. The detour is definitely worth the effort if you are in this part of the world.

We have travelled extensively throughout Spain over a period of more than 15 years and have stayed in many lovely hotels. This small hotel takes some beating. The food prepared by Clara is simply superb. Spain is really not known for its imaginative food but Clara is a trained Spanish pastrycook (isn't this an oxymoron?!) and has transferred her skills to cover not just the puddings but all of the courses. Wonderful! Jose, her husband, who handles front of house is a chatty character with a fine knowledge of the area and in particular its wines. The small village, within the Plaza Mayor of which the hotel is situated, is full of character and a peaceful haven. And the local area is beautiful. Do drive the camino to the south of Rafales that runs along a small river valley which has swimming holes, nightingales, and wild goats.
The accommodation was also first rate and kept up to a high standard. And a big plus for us is that they take well behaved dogs. Ours enjoyed her stay too and left with a big smile on her face! If you are travelling in this area, a stay at La Alqueria is a must.

My wife and I stayed here in spring this year. The medieval village is beautiful, but this tiny hotel was a highlight of the trip. The owners Jose and Clara were wonderful hosts and the food cooked by Clara and the wine chosen by Jose were as good as I've eaten in many expensive London restaurants. Jose was an enthusiastic and knowledgable tour guide, recommending places to visit in the area. I can't recommend this hotel highly enough, for the price, quality of food, location and the welcome we received it was an exceptional bargain. I would stay there again without hesitation.

We booked after reading the reviews and were very pleased we did. A delightful hotel in a lovely village. The hosts were brilliant nothing too much bother food excellant. Breakfast was freshly cooked even the empanadillas. Couldn't do it justice and they even asked if we wanted to take some of the lovely cakes with us en route.

The parking it's in the same square where the hotel is placed. If it's not possible near parking place it's one minute walking from here. Only depends of the dates you want to visit us. Thanks for interest and excuse my poor english… ;-) Jose
