We spent the weekend at The Lord Milner Hotel with friends and felt like we'd been transported to a different era! Just off the N1, it is very conveniently located and easily accessible. The hotel is beautiful, the staff are warm and helpful, the breakfast was fabulous, and the grounds are beautiful (especially the crystal blue pool tucked away in...

Make this a destination not just an OK lets stop there. Its worth more than that.Give yourself 2 nights and just relax and enjoy. Dont expect a 5 star resort. What you will get is step back in time with modern comforts, honest homely service and clean Karoo airwith a good nights sleep

We thorough enjoyed our one night visit which was very special in one of the luxury rooms. The room was spacious and the decor was lovely. We especially enjoyed sitting out on the balcony in the late afternoon and evening..

Hi Karen, Thank you so much for your review. Sitting on the top balcony sure is a great way to relax in Matjiesfontein, especially when one sees the trains passing by and how quiet the main road actually is. Make sure next time you stay for another extra night. Kind regards, Werner Smit General Manager The Lord Milner Hotel Matjiesfontein

A wonderful experience in diving into the past when one still had a slower pace. The hotel is lovely, the rooms very comfortable, the bar is quaint, the dinner and breakfast was of good quality in nostalgic surroundings. A must stopover for the unhurried traveller.

Thank you for your review and always appreciate any feedback. It is a pity that you did not enjoy the new menu, as we have been improving our total food offering for the last 4 years to compliment the total guest experience. We believe in food with some style, which both taste and looks good. The Karoo lamb is always...

The swimming pool is lovely and the rooms are charming, but very small. There is quite a lot of noise from the N1 if you are staying in the Matjies Motel rooms. The meals and especially the wines are expensive. But Matjiesfontein and the Lord Milner stay on our 'must do' list every time we drive down to the Cape...

Thank you so much for your review and always appreciate any feed back from our guests. The N1 can sometimes be a bit noisy when the North-east wind is blowing, which I think was the case on your stay, but in general you don't hear to much of the traffic. We look forward seeing you again and maybe then best...

The hotel has its own charm and is enhanced by the staffs attention to detail. Superb accommodation, extremely comfortable, fresh and clean. Every minute at the Lord Milner was a joy. A great place to stay on the way to Oudtshoorn via Prince Albert and the Swartberg Pass!

Lord Milner has been upgraded since the last time I went there 10 years ago. Matjiesfontein is a little cute oasis full of trees in the middle of the desert. There is even a large chlorine pool somewhere in the back garden. On arrival, we got rushed onto the double deck bus for the free town ride with Johnny who...

Thank you so much for your lovely review and thank you for noticing all the hard work in maintenance and upgrades done in the last few years to the hotel. Johnny just knows how to make one's day with his jokes and its always great to hear the bus tour is still after all these years so enjoyable to everyone....

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Lord Milner is a lovely Victorian Hotel, full of history and atmosphere, begging to be explored. Matjiesfontein, the town itself has wonderful gardens to leisurely lose yourself in, interesting museums abundant with all sorts, as well as the typical general store/gift shop, a small chapel, a coffee house full of homemade goodies, an old courthouse, a recently renovated church and The Laird’s Arms Bar. Most evenings, one can enjoy a ride on the old London bus and tour the grounds with our entertainer Johnny. Then experience sundowners in the Laird's Arms. Dinner is served from 7-9pm in our beautiful candlelit dining room. We’ve hosted some beautiful weddings and outrageous birthday parties in our transport museum or the old Courthouse. We are only 3 hours from Cape Town by road or take the train.. "The Train to Matjiesfontein". ... more   less
