We stayed for just one night and what a fabulous experience. I won't go into the detail as I don't want to spoil the many surprises and the true uniqueness of the location. Food was great as was the service from beginning to end. So glad I came across this hotel - please do make the detour from R62 -...

We always try to visit and stay at the smaller and historical places and towns when we can. This is an exceptional town with lots of history. Unfortunate we had not enough time on this visit, but we will be back soon for longer stay.

It is a historical village. Village and Hotel have been founded together with the railway. Everything is related to the train. You have to know this. The staff, museums, tours and people are fine. And of you have luck, a pride of Africa train stops and you can visit it. Very good for one day and one night. The level...

This is a little hidden gem. You could easily spend two days here as there is so much history attached to the village. Our stay at the Lord Milner hotel was lovely apart from the pigeons! Food was excellent. We will be back!

Loved the peace and quiet. The museums are fantastic, in fact the whole town is just one big museum. Accommodation excellent. Loved the fact that we could see how the trains come and go at the station.

What started out as a misunderstanding around our reservation, was smartly rectified with a cost-free upgrade and free breakfast thrown in - graciously accepted, say I!! The hotel rooms have been wonderfully upgraded since my last stay many years back, however, one must accept the age of the building resulting in some quircky squeaky floorboards and rattling sash windows. The...

Very nice hotel with very good service, however the cottages are small and oldfashioned. You can revive the history and the bus tour is an experience. The restaurant was very good and is worth visiting.

Lots of history to take in and experience for a one night stay. Very peaceful and relaxing. The headboard and feet end of the bed was broken and rattled every time you turned around. Did not make for a good night's sleep.

Just love the architecture of this hotel. We stayed here a number of years ago and enjoyed it. Breakfast was good then, am sure it is still good. This trip we just had time for coffee. Staff were helpful. One can wander around and have a look at the grounds which are well kept.

First stop on a 3,000 km road trip from Cape Town to the Kruger and it didn't disappoint. Having read about this remarkable hotel and it's history from the Boer war it was a must do. The Blue train stops regularly for afternoon tea which we unfortunately missed. It has a couple of amazing museums, one a private collection of...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Lord Milner is a lovely Victorian Hotel, full of history and atmosphere, begging to be explored. Matjiesfontein, the town itself has wonderful gardens to leisurely lose yourself in, interesting museums abundant with all sorts, as well as the typical general store/gift shop, a small chapel, a coffee house full of homemade goodies, an old courthouse, a recently renovated church and The Laird’s Arms Bar. Most evenings, one can enjoy a ride on the old London bus and tour the grounds with our entertainer Johnny. Then experience sundowners in the Laird's Arms. Dinner is served from 7-9pm in our beautiful candlelit dining room. We’ve hosted some beautiful weddings and outrageous birthday parties in our transport museum or the old Courthouse. We are only 3 hours from Cape Town by road or take the train.. "The Train to Matjiesfontein". ... more   less
