A lovely little hotel in the historical town of Matjiesfontein, this is the perfect place to relax and take it easy for a day or two. The food was fantastic and the grounds are great for a walk. The village is very historical and it feels like you have stepped back in time from the minute you arrive until you...

Wonderful histrorical hotel and motel rooms, great place for a quiet time to regenerate your spirits. We loved the gardens and town. The food was brilliant I can recomend most of the dishes prepared by the chef. My children hired thier bicycles and had a great time in the quiet town. It is not nessesarily aimed at children but they...

Lovely venue and museum. Dinner and service at the restaurant was very disappointing. Waited over 40 minutes for our food. When they arrived both our meals were cold. It spoiled a lovely day. Manager can't blame delay if restaurant was busy. Either get more staff or take fewer bookings. Would not revisit restaurant.

Dear Keith, Thank you very much for your review. I am truly sorry that you experienced some slow service at the restaurant. Easter weekends are always a challenge for our staff at Matjiesfontein, as we attract a large number of walk-in guests from the N1 on-route for their weekend away. I sincerely apologize for the slow service and be sure...

We took the Schosholoza train from CT to Matjiesfontein. Stayed two nights in the Lord Milner and then returned by train. The train took two hours longer than expected going there and was 3.5hrs late for the return journey. We were in no rush so it wasn't really a problem. The staff at the Lord Milner let us know that...

Thank you for your review. Yes, unfortunately the trains are sometimes not on time, but as you mentioned it gives guests more time to explore the town and enjoy the Karoo air and tranquility a bit longer. We look forward seeing you next time! Kind regards, Werner Smit General Manager The Lord Milner Hotel Matjiesfontein

Nostalgia ! A trip down memory lane. An interesting tie up with KZN, as the Rawdons are well known there. Hotel could probably do with a refurbishment of carpets etc., without destroying the Victorian ambience that pervades

We stayed 1 night in the Lord Milner Motel. Average. My door couldn't close without being locked. We had dinner at the Lord Milner Hotel. Absolutely superb food. Compliments all round. Dear Luayne, Thank you for your review and we appreciate your feedback on the station. The station itself is owned by Transnet and is maintained by them as a company. Last stayed here in 1984. It was good to see how the place has been spruced up and improved since then. A real oasis on a road trip through the Great Karoo. We enjoyed excellent tea and scones on the terrace at the coffee shop on arrival. There was a jovial honky-tonk piano session in the pub before a hearty...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Lord Milner is a lovely Victorian Hotel, full of history and atmosphere, begging to be explored. Matjiesfontein, the town itself has wonderful gardens to leisurely lose yourself in, interesting museums abundant with all sorts, as well as the typical general store/gift shop, a small chapel, a coffee house full of homemade goodies, an old courthouse, a recently renovated church and The Laird’s Arms Bar. Most evenings, one can enjoy a ride on the old London bus and tour the grounds with our entertainer Johnny. Then experience sundowners in the Laird's Arms. Dinner is served from 7-9pm in our beautiful candlelit dining room. We’ve hosted some beautiful weddings and outrageous birthday parties in our transport museum or the old Courthouse. We are only 3 hours from Cape Town by road or take the train.. "The Train to Matjiesfontein". ... more   less
