Sometimes you get so much more than you expected. This was the case at Barkan Dunes. We planned it as a stop-over from Sossusvlei to Swakopmund so we could break up the journey on the terrible gravel roads.
We booked the self catering cottage as it was located on its area & its amazing design.
Alma, the owner, met us with a warm welcome & offered cool drinks as we checked in & learned about this great & worthy project. They own over 10,000 hectares & it covers the most breathtaking mountain & valley views. There are 6-7 individual cottages built environmentally bermed into the rocky terrain. To become self sufficient, they've planted a citrus orchard, vegetable plots and occasionally harvest an oryx for meat.
We followed Alma to our cottage set between several huge boulders. It has everything you need. A large comfy bed with crisp cotton sheets, an outdoor shower & toilet, a 2 burner hob & a small fridge stocked with water, sodas & wine.
The cottage runs completely on solar power.

But it was the view that kept us captivated. Surrounded by mountains leading down to a wide grassy valley, we sat outside until well after dark. It was one of the most beautiful settings, in a perfect cottage!
Located about 20 km.outside Solitare, Barkan Dunes offers a stunning stay!

Our story is a bit unique here because it starts with us breaking down right at the Spreetshoogte Pass. Barney pulled over to check on us and after multiple attempts to jump our battery, swap our fuses, and inspect the engine - he drove an hour round trip to return with another vehicle and Niekie who literally ripped out the battery in his own truck while it stayed running so that we could all make it down to the resort together. As soon as we arrived, Gerda hands us two pints to calm our nerves and a comfortable seat looking out on a spectacular landscape. After some great conversation with the three of them, our car was up and running on a fresh battery they took out of a spare vehicle and got us on our way to Sousseveli.

Let’s get the obvious out of the way, the resort is gorgeous. It’s in a perfect location, has incredible views, and wonderful accommodations. There is literally no question I would recommend this place in a heartbeat. But the reason we’ll be returning is the people themselves. Barney, Niekie, and Gerda were the most helpful and hospitable folks we’ve ever come across in our years of traveling and we’re forever grateful for their care and thoughtfulness. What could have set us back by days on a desert overpass was washed away with the kindness of strangers and a cold beer.

Many thanks for everything and we look forward to seeing one another again.

Until then,
Brette and Dave

We stayed in Okanti, the self catering house a couple of hundred metres from the Barken Dune Chalets. The house is very spacious, with plenty of outside space.

On the lower floor is a bedroom with three single beds and a lovely en-suite bathroom with a sunken bath. All tastefully decorated and very comfortable. Great quality beds and bedlinen. Upstairs is a large open plan sitting, dining kitchen, study area. There is also a large bedroom with king size bed.

All rooms have the most wonderful views. The terraces look down the valley, and you can dine outside, barbecue and just laze about looking in wonder at the stunning landscape.

We were told the property was going to be renovated as it was felt to be a bit dated compared to the rest of the lodge. We felt the bedrooms, bathrooms and terraces needed no work at all. They stylish and comfortable. The open plan kitchen, dining, living area were very decent too. Perhaps not as modern as the rest of the lodge, but certainly comfortable and well equipped.

We were welcomed to use the pool, fat bikes, restaurant and all the other facilities in the same way as other guests. The fat bikes were a great way to see the area, and good fun too.

The meerkats were a absolute delight. Our children loved them, as did I.

I'd not hesitate to recommend a stay here.

A short note to express our appreciation of the notable experience we had at Barkhan Lodge, on 30 June 2020.
Other than the the striking setting and amazing sundowner, we find the new rooms to be unique, spacious and clean.
Over and above however the praise goes to Nicky and Gerda, who ensured we had a memorable stay. They spoiled us with delicious food and catering for our every need. Compliments to a remarkable managing couple.

We trust that there will be a next time.

Best Regards

This was our 2nd visit to Barkhan Dune Retreat and again we were absolutely blown away by the breathtaking views, luxurious accommodation and the warm, welcoming reception. We chose to stay at Onkanti this time, a private self-catering bungalo that is equipped with everything you need. We love this place and hope to go back sooner rather than later.

Stunning location with breathtaking views. Warm welcomes in traditional Namibian style. Kuanga’s kitchen is fully equipped, room overflows with lush bedding; not to mention the privacy. Perfect romantic getaway. Can’t wait to go back

We spent two nights here - with my wife and young son. I would very highly recommend this place. The location and setting is excellent but what really make this place magical is the super hospitality. Gerda and Niekie are excellent hosts and go out of their way to make sure that guests are comfortable. The place is very well run with everything just perfect. The food was excellent and the local advice and guidance given by the two of them was exceptional. Overall we had a great time and having been to Namibia a few times now, not sure how we missed this place in the past. It’s is the most perfect setting with the most excellent management.

After a very long gravel road section you get the sign for Barkhan Dune Retreat which takes you to this place which is something special for sure. Nestled on the foot of a massive mountain you get this hotel with the rooms dug into the dunes which was an absolute first for us. The rooms beautifully furnished with a feature that we never experienced anywhere else. The beds can role out onto the paved terrace and one can enjoy a nights sleep outside under the stars in the Namib desert and take my word for it it's something you will remember forever.

The staff was extremely friendly and the food 5star and beyond they even catered for our kids and also the kids loved all the staff and to interact with them. There is a must do thing and that is to go up the mountain and walk for about 2kms on it to get a view that is just picture perfect overlooking the vast desert area. There is also e-bikes with a very nice bike trail to ride. This stop was very well spent and we would love to return to this place in the future.

Thank you Barkhan for a spectacular experience!
We were treated with delicious food, and friendly hospitality.
Beautiful decorated rooms with an uncluttered view over the valley of silence!

We took full advantage partaking in the many activities available at the lodge. It is unbelievable how easy it is to ride the e-bike and the solar buggies are a must to explore the surroundings.

We will definitely come back again soonest. Next time we will the bring the family.

Peaceful setting with beautiful surroundings. This is a place home away from home where one feels relaxed in a very homely environment. The hosts Nicki and Gerda made us feel so welcome with their friendly and efficient service. The eco friendly and self sustainable set up is a big bonus. Food was made with fresh greens daily, absolutely delicious.

You should allow for about 5 to 6 hours, depending on road conditions and ones familiarity with driving on gravel, although technically you can do it in 4 hours.
