This is not our first visit, nor, do I suspect, will it be our last. This time 'round we brought our doggos along for the adventure, and our stay was all the more special for having had this privilege. We rented the Zara Cottage and invited friends to join us, and all in all it was a lekker kuier. I love the fact that the little dipping pools have been installed, which offered welcome respite from the heat of the day. Not that it was as hot as I'd feared – it appears as if this summer has been quite mild by the standards I'm accustomed to in the Karoo. Ashley and Andre are fabulous hosts, and they really know how to make one's stay extra special. Bird lovers will do their nut here. During our stay we saw rufous-breasted sparrowhawk, steppe buzzard, black-winged kite, sparrows, white-throated canaries, white-backed mousebirds, among others. A special shout-out to the barn owl who was raising the dead outside my bedroom window at an undogly hour in the morning on my last night here. Not that I minded too much, as I feel a special bond with these feathery friends, and it was the first time I've heard one call. Even if it sounds as if a cat demon is being squashed. Also, there appears to have been a population explosion with field mice thanks to the incredibly good rainfalls this year. They were everywhere, and I've not seen the veld so green in ages. Be mindful that all the tap water is incredibly brackish, so remember not to fill the kettle or your glass from the tap. Sweet, fresh drinking water is supplied. Wolverfontein feels like my home away from home. It's just far away enough from Cape Town to make me feel like I have escaped the city, but it's close enough that it's not such a hectic drive if I'm looking for a breakaway in the Karoo. Highly recommended for folks who want a 'drive and flop' kind of holiday.

We only had one night in Zara Cottage - sadly, had to leave the next day. Andre greeted us with such warmth. The cottage is kitted out in authentic old Karoo style and was such a peaceful place to be. We had everything we needed – for hot weather, there is even a little plunge pool to cool off in. We fitted in two short walks in the surrounding veld which was full of diverse life after good rains. I am planning to return for longer to explore more – sad to miss the game reserve accessible close by.

A beautiful, peaceful place. The cottages are really comfortable, with everything you need. There are lots of great walks from your front door. The Touwsberg Private Game and Nature Reserve is right across the road. Entrance is free and from our experience you’re likely to see some giraffes! The hosts are lovely and helpful, they made sure we had everything we needed to have a great stay. We will definitely be going back again.

We so enjoyed our stay at Wolverfontein - a real treat to spend time there. Andre is such an efficient and friendly host which adds to the delightful experience - from the time of our booking to the time we left, Andre made every effort to ensure our comfort in the beautifully restored and decorated Zara Cottage and D'WaenHuis. It is a place of great tranquillity where one can in comfort enjoy Karoo open space, fresh air and an escape from hectic city life. Andre kindly assisted with cycle and walking recommendations. We will be back soon - thanks Andre and Ashley.
