One of the highlights of Kaokoland in the far northern reaches of Namibia, Epupa is a magical belt of makalani palm forest on the perennial Kunene River. There’s something special about this Kaokoland refuge 180km north of Opuwo, where the Kunene River plunges into the gorge below. Baobab trees cling to the rocky slopes as torrents of water rumble and tumble down the rocks with a flash of rainbow and an invigorating burst of wonder. Two hundred metres upstream from the cascading falls, Omarunga Epupa-Falls Camp is a cosy thatched lodge on the riverbank set under the palms, and the perfect place from which to experience Epupa enchantment. Dine with a river view and wake to the music of the falls and the sound of palm thrushes singing in the trees. Let Epupa lull you into a peaceful reverie. In between rest and relaxation, there is much to experience here. Take the golden opportunity to visit the Himba, one of the last semi-nomadic groups in Africa; get your courage in check for a guided walk in search of the Kunene crocs or a rafting trip on the river (seasonal); and follow trails downstream keeping eyes open for our avian friends who favour this riverine habitat. And at sunset join the sundowner drive to a hill overlooking Epupa Falls for that time of day when everything pauses for beauty and celebration. Drink in the African ambience and magic of Epupa.

My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights on our visit to Epupu Falls. First, the staff were absolutely fabulous, accommodating, friendly, and helpful. We couldn't say enough about how friendly they were. Although there was only one other couple staying at the lodge during this pandemic period, the lodge had full services available. All meals were wonderful, our meals were yummy and service was fast. Our Tent/Room was on the river and we watched the sun go down from our porch. The grounds of the lodge were well kept, beautifully manicured, and harbored lots of bird and butterfly life. The pool was fun - although very cold especially since it is winter. But even with that, we played around in the water for about a half hour and then just enjoyed relaxing on the lounge chairs. The lodge offered many activities although we had already had a tour booked outside by our travel agent to a Himba community site. We hiked along the river and again, the sites and views were outstanding. Highly recommended, enjoy Epupu Falls, an oasis bordering Angola and Namibia. We will be back!

Excellent place to stay. Clean facilities, and very friendly staff. The Campsite is well organised and electricity is available at each campsite. Very close to the Epupa falls. The dining and bar area are very close to the river.

The camp in my view is the best amongst all the camps. Is managed by a young vibrant lady, who understands the needs and expectations of her customers.

I was initially booked in room 6, but was transferred to room 1, to accommodate my preference, to experience the sounds of the waters that thunders.

The bar is well stocked. They offer a bottle of wines and shooters on special.

The camp was recently taken over by the Godwana group and all is in swing to upgrade the camp to the standard that Godwana is known for

We chose this campsite as the lodge allows campers to make use of the swimming pool and bar.
We were given Campsite No. 2 right on the river just above the falls so you can hear falls which is lovely.
The swimming pool is wonderful and although not icy (yay for me) cold enough to cool off.
No free WiFi for campers and you have to buy a coupon for N$100 for 500mb
The shared ablutions are nicely set out and clean. The water pressure in the shower is sufficient but the water doesn't drain fast enough so had to move right out from under the water to not stand in a puddle.
We are going on a hike with Tom this afternoon and looking forward to learning about everything that happens along this beautiful river.
Lovely campsite, enough for us to stay here for 2 nights. Very peaceful and well maintained.

Omarunga is on the river and has a fair view of the falls . a better view is a short walk away. Amazing setting on the river with great sunsets . Drinking sundowners under the palm trees was amazing. Be careful with petrol range,- our Suzuki Jimny had a fuel tank of 40 L which was too small to get there and back to the nearest filling station

We had three nights at Omarunga and in hindsight that was pretty perfect! We were two couples and this was our third tour of Namibia, but first time this far North.
We arrived to an almost empty lodge and were given tents one and two, directly on the river. You can lie in bed and watch the river, what more can anyone ask for.
Yes, the bathrooms are slightly dark, but to me, this was not a problem, I loved the stone built table in the bathroom of tent two and the huge walk in shower. Gorgeous!
The tents are well equipped and very cosy.
As this was our honeymoon, we were treated to a separate table by the river for the first evening meal and breakfast and everybody was so charming and helpful. As the lodge was very empty at first, dinner and breakfast were served, both meals flawless and delicious.
On the second day, there were more guests, so the meals were served buffet style, which was also very nice and a very good and high quality choice of dishes was offered.
On the first afternoon we booked a guided walk along the river, which in hindsight we could have done on our own, but I was actually quite happy with the guide and his explanations, very informative.
The next morning, we walked to the falls and were very impressed, what a beautiful part of the world. We did the same in the evening, to find that suddenly there was a lot more water and the falls looked even more spectacular. Be advised that you need to pay 40 NAD to view the sunset from the viewpoint hill. This information only becomes clear once you walked all the way up and see the signs. We did not carry any cash, as nobody had told us, but we left the money at reception to be collected.
We spent a lot of time by the pool, which has a good size and lovely sunbeds to chill out and read under big umbrellas.
A special thank you to Andrew and his team for being wonderful hosts and creating a very warm and welcoming atmosphere.

This review could just be 'you need to go here'.
The staff were brilliant, thanks for making it such a memorable stay. The location is incredible and we wanted for nothing from the minute we arrived until we left.
We camped next to the river, and the communal ablutions were the best that we used on the whole trip.
Everything that we needed after 6 days of constant travelling was there, cold beer, hot showers, excellent food and laundry ( a lady just took everything and the next day delivered it back..no problems)
They can organise any trips that you want.. I wasn't sure but ended up being a highlight of the stay.

We stayed for 3 nights in May in one of the chalet/tents. The location is good, right on the river and allows you to relax and enjoy the view. It's a short walk to the falls so good for getting the sunrise and sunset photos.

Most of the staff were really helpful and welcoming. The manager was nice and friendly, I did want to see him before we left to mention the points below but as we left very early I didn't manage to see him.
The food was good, no complaints there.
The tented chalet was a bit disappointing..........
The door to the chalet did not have a canvas flap to pull down over the screen so privacy was somewhat lacking. The "windows" did so it was strange the door didn't. Repairs were needed in parts of the canvas, tears and holes were evident. I wouldn't like to be staying in the summer with biting insects about. The bathroom next to the sleeping part of the tent has open areas which bats made use of, during the night my husband got up to use the bathroom and was joined by 4 bats whizzing around. It wouldn't be too difficult to put some sort of mesh in place to prevent this happening. Each morning the bathroom floor, sink and shower had bat droppings on them.
Taking everything into account we would not stay here again, it isn't a "cheap" place to stay and during our trip around Namibia and Botswana we stayed in much nicer places and for less money. It's a pity as we were really looking forward to staying in the far North.

I spent 2 night at the Omarunga campsite early July 2020. The location is simply fantastic right on the banks of the Kunune River. It's a 3 min walk to get to the Epupa falls and their spray can be seen from the camp.
Campsites are shaded under Makalani palm trees and with ample space. Ablution blocks are spotless clean.
Staff is very welcoming and helpful.
I highly recommend!

Camping was scenic, clean and well maintained. Camp staff were friendly and helpful, but due to covid 19 issues the minimal staffing sometimes made it hard to find someone to get a drink. I'm sure that will be better as time goes on.
