An extraordinary location, just beneath a ruined castle high on a hill with stunning views of the plain around. Full of atmosphere, lovely terrace (except with huge wasp problem during the summer), local wine production, greta walking around about. Rooms comfortable although on the small size, reasonably well equipped for a hotel of this grade. very good kitchen with interesting food at not-unreasonable prices. Friendly staff. Hopeless wifi, kept dropping out.

The hotel was perfect specially for relax vacations near the Baden Baden. Clean, friendly and with an excellent view. The breakfast was like the hotel: just perfect! I hope to come back soon for more days.

Even the drive there is an adventure in its own right. If possible, take the approach road from the south that starts in a village called Ottersweier. It takes you through wonderful vineyards along winding roads that give you ever increasing views of the Rhine Valley below. During summer you can enjoy the outdoor part of the hotel, service is good, and I can imagine no better place to have a cool beer. More joy comes if you decide to eat in the restaurant and there you should opt for one of the gourmet menus so with anything from 3 to 5 courses. You should opt for the version where drinks are included: aperitif, the right sort of wine with the relevant course, mineral water and in the end a very drinkable eau de vie of your choice. They don't stint with their portions both liquid and solid and only use local produce. Important: book early and ask for a table at the panoramic windows, an additional distraction during dinner as you look down on the busy life 1000 feet below. It's not cheap, but as a treat it is most definitely good value and I will use any excuse to go back there regularly.

We (mixed couple UK / DE, living in Switzerland) met with friends from the UK for a weekend in October 2015 at Burg Windeck with 2 double rooms (135 € per room incl. breakfast) booked. 1 of them (ours, luck of the draw) was one of the two hotel suites with a huge balcony around and a fantastic view across the Rhine valley, the hills & vineyards of the Northern Black Forrest. There was a big local wedding going on and the upmarket Panorama Restaurant was closed for the public – so was the whole castle but since we were hotel guests, they opened their smaller restaurant “Burgstube” with an equally good view for our party of four with à la carte option and the good menu. Food and Service were fantastic (starters, fish / meet, delicious variety of deserts), atmosphere was very friendly and cosy, and they have an excellent wine card, too – high quality at very affordable prices. Our suite had a spacious living area with off-white sofa and relaxation arm chairs, flat screen that we did not use, free wireless, table and chairs, and a small bedroom with a four poster bed. The bathroom was nothing special, though, and limited space to lay out the toiletries but that was not causing us any issues since everything else was done so nicely. You feel being part of living in a real castle, wooden staircases and nice wooden floors, white/blue window shutters outside and all buildings extremely well maintained internally & externally. Being located in such a fantastic area, there are many different hiking tracks, all well marked, to explore the area and enjoy the forest, vineyards, authentic “Gasthöfe” in the area – all of them very hospitable and friendly. Around Burg Windeck itself, each building still serves a purpose and we used the former horse stables a lot in between our activities – each horse box has been turned into a cosy sitting area, local snacks, coffee, cake, drinks are on the simple but fine menu. We can only recommend spending a couple of days in this beautiful spot in the world.

The Burg Windeck is a charming hotel situated high above Buhl, Germany. I really enjoyed exploring the grounds, hotel and on premise old castle. The nearby hiking looked to be amazing. The front desk was great. It was nice to go back in time a bit and enjoy the surroundings. PROS 1. Great Views of the Rhine Valley and city lights of Buhl at night 2. Onsite 17th Century Castle for you to explore 3. Feel like you are living in history 4. Food was top notch (included breakfast & restaurant) 5. Larger, clean rooms, with mini-fridge CONS 1. Its an Older Hotel with all the charms 2. It's a 10min drive from town up small, curvy roads 3. Our room #4 had an odd shower configuration with the slanted roof 4. Wifi is provided but challenging roaming around hotel grounds 5. Not all rooms will have an amazing view
