Cupboard door off hinges, water trickled out when having a shower, room needs a revamp! Breakfasts very disappointing! Jam bottles empty, ran out of pork sausages, no egg cups, boiled eggs uncooked, fried eggs were hard and rubbery, we could go on and on.... Will not recommend, very disappointed.

Employer made booking. Read the reviews and I was skeptical, but pleasantly surprised.
Establishment well located in Hillcrest area close to major routes and shopping centre's.
Supper was included in our booking. It was tasty and well prepared. Okay no menu or choose, neither the less enjoyable. If you didn't want the prepared supper, nothing stops you from going out to the many restaurants in the area. Goodness you not a tree, move if you want too.
Rooms clean and serviced daily, with TV, Decoder, amenities, fridge, kettle and dryer. Bed comfortable in room I was in.
Enjoyed the breakfast menu and spread that was prepared.
Yes, sure you can find fault with the place, just like any other place, but for the purpose it was booked and used for it fitted our criteria.

While the rooms are quite homely and spacious, I was very disappointed in the way the staff treated us. They were constantly unavailable and there was never anyone at reception to help with anything. When I got to the reception and rang the bell at least three times someone would come strolling at a snail's pace after I have waited forst least 10 minutes. Upon return at night one had to ring tje bell three times before the person manning the gate would finally wake up and open the gate. Very dangerous especially at night. It's hard to believe that this establishment received 4 stars from the tourism grading council. The pillows are very lumpy. And some staff members act as if they are doing you a favour and not delivering a service. The only reason I didn't rate them as terrible is because the breakfast is really good

I booked and paid upfront for an overnight stay for 3 people, and had to change the date. I emailed and phoned to confirm that everything was in order and this was confirmed by Rob a week before our stay. When we arrived we were told there was no booking, and asked to show proof of email confirmation and generally treated like we were lying about the booking rather than trying to help, and were just told they were full. When I asked about the money I paid we were told they didn't keep cash for a refund, and no one even attempted to check their emails or accounts to assist me. I was told Rob, who had managed my booking, was away. When I asked them to check if he had perhaps not changed the date, my booking was found and it had been noted that I had paid. Without much apology, they offered to find alternative accommodation which we were fine with, but when they discovered that the only rooms available were more expensive than what we had paid, they suddenly found cash to refund us and sent us on to pay the extra ourselves, even though it was completely their error. So if you do book here, I suggest you check more than once, with multiple members of staff that your booking is correct, we were just lucky there was space at the other, more expensive accommodation, or else we would have had no where to stay for the night.

Dear fellow travellers please be warned, do not even consider this as an option when visiting Hillcrest or surrounding area - we had a wedding in a venue close by and booked in for four nights.
The only word I can use to describe this accommodation is SHOCKING!!!!!! VERY VERY DIRTY. The staff is definitely not trained to work with the public and has absolutely NO hospitality skills what-so-ever. I have such a long list of complaints but I think the most important to me was the fact that it was so DIRTY.

I travelled to Durban for business and my company booked me in at Fawncastle Estate. I did the obvious thing and checked Trip Advisors comments. I was horrified by the comments and was afraid to stay there ... was shocked on my arrival ... my room as beautiful, neat and tidy. The breakfast was incredible every morning ... you had such a wide variety from freshly baked muffins to your bacon and eggs or omelette, fresh fruit, yoghurt, cereal and so much more ... what an awesome experience ... staff and management was extremely friendly and accommodating. ..

We booked in December for 4 adults for 2 nights in Executive rooms, for mid February? I confirmed with Rob via email two days before. On arrival he had only booked one Pool room, not my request, no second room for 2 more adults. The lady at reception didn't appear to know which rooms were the executive ones. We were then offered a standard room, admittedly at no charge for the first night, and could move to the booked room for the second night, not exactly convenient. Had to pack up luggage for the day etc. The hotel certainly wasn't the 4 star as advertised, generally felt like the reception and dining areas needed a good scrub and some TLC, like broken lamp shades. Our shower dripped constantly, no second bedside light, broken zip cushion etc.
Certainly will not book again.

Upon calling and staying on short notice we where impressed with how accommodating the staff where. The manager ensured we where seen to at the best of her ability. Rooms where clean and beds comfortable, the "resident cat" was well kept, clean and too adorable. Making our stay away from home feel like home. The rooms we where given where all clean, organised and well maintained. This hotel is a sure referal to all who want a warm welcome and a relaxing experience. Congratulations for the team for making our stay a great stay.

Disgrace. Stayed there for the last 8 years, more than once a year but very disappointed. Somebody had slept in the beds. No rooms available on check-in, even thought they were confirmed with Rob himself.. Not one air conditioner in any of our 7 rooms working. Really disappointed to what was once a really beautiful bed and breakfast.

We spent our holiday in December 2015 at Fawncastle. Worst accommodation / customer service ever. We had no electricity for 2 days (apparently some electricity cable problem : which was matter-of-fact explained to me was not their fault) with no DSTV and hot water for the 2 days (we had to seek bathing facilities elsewhere - after a 1 hour drive). When we arrived at Fawncastle we were met by an austere woman (with no smile) who showed us our room with no further comment about the itinerary at the guesthouse. I later had to go down myself to enquire about more information of what to expect from our booking at the guesthouse. By the way, after 21h00 you are on your own as there is no management/staff on the premises!
The air conditioner never worked and the breakfast served is below par (there was ants in our tea which meant the urn was not washed and refilled that morning). I requested for the water to be changed. The room is in a pathetic condition and need urgent upgrading e.g. the water in the bathroom shower tap only trickles out and there is grime accumulating in all corners of the room right through to the bathroom. I reported to the lady in charge that they must have a back-up generator for the electricity problem and I was informed that they don't have a generator. I asked for compensation for the inconvenience but was offered none. Rob did not follow through with my complaint and gave some feeble excuse that there is a generator but it is not working (note that the manager on duty previously mentioned that they don't have a generator). I will never book with Fawncastle ever again! To those who use the service of Groupon, be weary when booking accommodation.

Many thanks for your review. Unfortunately, with regards to the problem of no electricity, there is not a lot we could do about it. a substation blew up and a lot of Durban was without power over Christmas day and boxing day. We attempted to take steps to negate the effects of no power by purchasing a 30KVA generator at great expense. However the generator from the outset was faulty and the matter is now before the courts. As for an itinerary. I am afraid I am at a loss as to what is meant by this. Everything is explained on the guest information card which is in the room. The guesthouse is manned from 6 am to 9pm, and we have a night guard, so again am at a loss. We have operated in this manner for 14 years. Again i personally did offer to move you to another room which you declined. And second, with regards to compensation for the days without power, I simply asked you to forward me an email which i could send onto our insurers. several guests have already done this and been compensated for those days. I have yet to receive the requested email from yourself.
