I had the chance to get back to Gattapone after more than ten years...I was impressed just like the first time I visited it. Gattapone is simply a unique hotel that will charm your eyes as soon as a small lovely building appears in front of you along a romantic path below the Rocca hill, which you can access in Piazza Campello (just one minute walk from the Cathedral). Outside the hotel, a gorgeous nature surrounding the ancient Bridge of Towers is a precious gift to your eyes and heart’s desire of silence and peace. Inside the hotel, that view together with the original furnishings and the wooden stairs create a special atmosphere where any detail has the taste of the past. Mr. Hanke very kindly shares with curious guests the hotel secrets. Gattapone is not only an excellent choice to visit Spoleto and other Umbria towns (Assisi is only 30 minutes car from the hotel), but, above all, an unforgettable experience to escape from noisy daily life, being sure that you will not bear the risk to miss aseptic hotel chains and crowded spa resorts.

I'm definitely a fan of jaw dropping views, and Hotel Gattapone's view of the Ponte de Torri was unmatchable. We were traveling as a group, 3 couples, my wife and I had our one year old sun with us. Communication with the staff was great leading up to our stay, and when we arrived, Luccio who works the front desk greeted us, helped us park our car, and assisted us with the bag drag to the room. The hotel had kindly upgraded us to a suite so we had more room for our son and his crib which was greatly appreciated. The hotel staff were all great, Luccio especially assisted us with some great restaurant suggestions and itinerary suggestions. The Maria Grazia, lady who runs the breakfast, which was really good also was super nice to our son. I know some have commented on the hotel being dated, but honestly we loved the decor, and the vibe of the hotel. We'd always have fun in the evening after a day trip and dinner sipping wine in the large lounge in the center of the hotel. We had great weather, but if we'd been rained in this would have been the spot to relax and just enjoy the view. Driving and parking, there's about 4-6 spots to park right next to the hotel for free, or in spots down the street for about 5 euro per day. Driving in, the route up through the ZTL does have a one way at a time road up to the hotel with stop lights on each end. It's a little tight if you aren't used to windy, cobble stone streets, but the cars fit! Loved it here, it was my favorite stay on our 2 week trip. Spoleto was a great base for Umbria and also Eastern Tuscany. We visited Lago di Trasimeno, Isola Polvese, Montepulciano, Assissi, Montefalco, Bevagna, Spello, Marmore falls (check operating times) and the San Pietro monastery in the Valnerina valley. Also stopped at Civita di Bagnoreggio on our way to Porto Santo Steffano.

Excellent position. Leave your car there, park your bags and go wander. The hotel must have been an excellence in the late '70s or early '80s but since then nobody has passed a paintbrush and it must be a year since anyone swept the balcony or aired the place. Huge pity as the potential is evident.

We stayed here one night on our whirlwind tour of Northern Italy and we loved it! We had a tough day of late trains/missed buses but when we finally got to the hotel we were greeted by the nicest man who spoke some English, which was welcomed by us! Our room was small and overlooked the next door church's bell. We had a great view of the city and the room was very clean. The man working at the front recommended a great dinner spot and gave us directions to get to the "birdcages" the next morning and invited us to their complimentary breakfast. Much to our surprise he was still working the next morning in the breakfast area! Breakfast was wonderful, a wide array of baked goods, cereals, yogurt, fresh fruit and beverages. Very good hospitality! We asked if we could leave our bags while we explored the city some because we weren't ready to head to the bus station and he pointed out a small area in their main lobby where we could store them. It didn't seem very secure but we got the sense they do this all the time and the town seemed safe. It was, our bags were untouched hours later when we returned. We would absolutely stay here again!

Booked online for a superior room, my friend also booked a superior room on a separate booking however my room was not a superior room - her's was of a much better standard than mine. We were told she paid a higher rate - but not sure how that is relevant if I booked and paid for a superior room. This is a charming little hotel, must have been a hip and happening place in the 60's and 70's with lots of character and amazing views, but some aspects of it seriously need updating. The curtains in my room were faded and falling off the rails, the handle on the window was broken and the mattress on the bed was way past its use-by date. I asked if the bar was open and was advised that it was not, but that there is a minibar in the room. The minibar fridge was noisy all night and had with no alcohol inside. Also despite asking for a non-smoking room it had obviously had smokers in the recent past. The breakfast is basic but fine, but for some reason we were not allowed to eat out on the terrace - which was one of the things that attracted us to this hotel. Don't know why - the door was open and weather was perfect. The view of the aqueduct at night from the room was amazing, but you don't need to stay at the hotel to see this, its such a short stroll from the town centre. This beautiful town is amazing and though this hotel is close to the aqueduct - I wouldn't stay there again but would stay elsewhere in Spoleto for a better night's sleep.
