Wonderful stay, really friendly and helpful owners who go out of their way to make guests feel welcome.Did the full day Addo trip and evening boat trip and can honestly say that both were awesome. If you visit then please go the dune fields. Never seen anything like them in my life. You can walk for miles , see no one and they are simply stunningly beautiful. Visited mainly to see Addo but it's the dunes that will live long in my memory.
I feel beholden to future guests to alert folk to exactly what they are getting. This is advertised as luxury and in SA terms reasonably costly. We were there to celebrate 36 years together. It is clear from the website that there is no catering on the premises in the evening - fair enough. The guest house made arrangements for us to eat next door - the elephants footprint. We duly departed, equipped with a light from the Happy Jackal, to be told no the kitchen was not open at the elephants footprint. There is absolutely nowhere else to eat, no delivery service, no reliable taxi. I had a drink so would not drive. The response to our situation at the Happy Jackal was underwhelming - no offer to prepare sandwiches in their kitchen which let us not forget serves breakfast. If I had said I had arranged something and it failed I would act to remedy not shrug my shoulders, really very poor! I am British I do not complain but I do warn so be warned. I finally summoned the "gumption" to ask for a bottle of wine - for which I was billed 90R. After meal of packet of crisps had bath. Plug would not open to let water out - we reported this at breakfast by the time we left the next morning still not fixed and starting to smell. No milk in the rooms. To be clear the hosts were lovely, the property beautiful and the room excellent but the attention to detail woeful. When traveling to a foreign country and shunning hotels for private guesthouses you need to be confident and I truly hope this feedback is acted on and maybe reassurance provided on the website. Until then fellow traveller book elsewhere but seek out Captain Beau - worry not about finding the park if you stay a little out it is very easy.…
The Happy Jackal is a lovely bed and breakfast a stones through from Addo Elephant Park. Room was perfect as was breakfast and the hosting. We had chosen to go on the game drive with Shaun and what an amazing experience. Shaun found us so many animals to view and was incredibly knowledgable about everything we saw. We had a fabulous day and chose to have the Sunday dinner after which was perfect candlelit end to the day. Many thanks to the whole team but particularly Shaun who made our stay ! Gail and Steve x
This is easily one of the best places we stayed in South Africa! Room was huge, and impeccably clean with a lovely bathroom and deck overlooking the river. All the amenities you could ask for with comfortable beds, TV with satellite, wifi, etc. I really can't say enough good things about the wonderful hospitality of Peter and Liz, the breakfasts are amazing! Fresh baked bread, homemade jams from the garden, and warthog sausage to top it off! We booked the full day safari and the resident expert guide Shaun took us out, what an incredible experience. He was knowledgable, personable and extremely accommodating. Best safari of our trip! Would HIGHLY recommend the Happy Jackal Guest House to anyone wanting to visit the Addo Elephant Park or surrounding area.
We stayed here 2 nights and had a fabulous stay, we can’t thank Peter, Liz and Suzette enough for there fantastic hospitality during our stay. It was excellent value for money, the common room is very comfortable as are the beds in the rooms which were nice and clean. The breakfast was excellent each morning, especially the homemade bread and jams. The biggest thanks must go to Shaun our driver and guide for the day on safari. We saw so many animals and he is so knowledgable about all of them from elephants down to dung beetle. We had such a good day, out for about 9 hrs with a picnic stop we can’t recommend it enough, far, far better than driving ourselves. We ate out at two local bars each evening but you need a car for the short drive.
Incredible stay at this amazing place. Everything was perfect as you will see in other reviews from room, breakfast, game drive with Shaun. Particular highlight for us was the recommendation from Suzette to go on a sunset river cruise with Beau. We did this on the evening we arrived and had the most amazing dinner on the private river boat with a visit to the dunes at sunset. I can't recommend it highly enough! Thanks so much for giving us so many fantastic recommendations and for going far above and beyond to make our stay perfect. Look no further, this is the ideal stay for visiting Addo National Elephant Park!!
Nice and clean Accommodation, all the bits n pieces you would expect from a Small town Lodge. The hospitality was however great. The Owners were amazing. Breakfast was a treat. Waited on hand & foot. Great local produce. We gorged ourselves on homemade bread & condiments. We will definitely drop in again. Only feedback would be to add block out curtains at the sunrise side windows.
a truly great spot for 4 days to explore Addo and surrounding areas .Shaun was a fabulous guide for our trip to Addo and highly recommended .Peter ,Liz and Suzette were also wonderful in their efforts to make our stay as pleasant as possible
We stayed in the self catering cottage here for one night. It was very clean and spacious and good value for a family of four. The location on the Sundays River and directly next to Addo is also great. The only drawback of staying in the self catering cottage was that we didn't really have access to the common rooms/areas of the main building (we were left to our devices). But the accommodation itself was excellent.
The Happy Jackal is a great place to stay ! Very nice room, with nice view on the river, comfortable beds. The common room is very cosy. The English breakfast was just amazing and the owners and the staff very friendly. It felt like home ! We also did a day of game drive organized with the Happy Jackal, a great experience. I would definitely stay there again if I come back to this area.
