As the name suggests, "Colonial Africa" is the theme in architecture, decor, setting and atmosphere of The Colonial on Arundel. Nestling in citrus orchards on a working farm, only 10 minutes from the malaria free Addo Elephant National Park, this 4 star 2-suite facility offers understated luxury, coupled with relaxed, friendly attention, and is enhanced by highly acclaimed cuisine. Each suite has private entrance, its own private lounge and private swimming pool. Attention to detail in the suites is a trademark of Molly's personality...luxury guest amenities, toweling gowns, tea & coffee facilities, safes, swimming towels, coffee table books and magazines, alarm clock. In-house safaris with Conor, the owner and a registered guide, to the Addo Elephant National Park, will enhance your African adventure. These tours are undertaken in a air-conditioned vehicle and offer the visitor an experience in wildlife, culture and unforgettable scenery. Conor and Molly have created a truly special place that goes to the very heart of relaxation and comfort. Within easy reach are mountain walks, horse-riding, elephant back safaris, farm excursions, cheetah breeding farm tours and visits into nearby private reserves. The Colonial is truly a place where our guests leave as friends, to return time and time again. The warm welcome feeling extends right down to our Head of Public Relations, Marley the Labrador, who successfully creeps into everyone's heart. Within a 45-minute drive of Port Elizabeth Airport and the beaches, and also the gateway to the Karoo, as well as to the Garden Route to Cape Town, The Colonial on Arundel is truly the desirable Eastern Cape place to be in every respect. Welcome to the real Africa.

We recommend this place, for us it was like a dream to be there! Molly and Conor are extremely helpful and as soon as you enter the "stressless zone" you are taken absolutely care of....if you like to walk, even better; the Africano Restaurant is close and if you do not like to walk; there is Conor, taking you to places to eat, for a few Rand....Molly had even organised a driver who took us from the Airport St. Elizabeth to the Colonial: Very nice the breakfast and we did not have only a room, but a small apartment for ourselves. Not to forget the drive game with Conor, he shows great respect for the wonderful animals and has expertise; WE WANT TO GO BACK , this tells it all

The Colonial on Arundel was the first station on our tour along the Garden Route. Although we had stayed for only one night, it was one of the highlights of the complete trip. It is a typical old farmers house on a plantation with a huge garden and a huge terrace. You automtically feel like taken back to former times.

Molly and Connor are one of the loveliest and helpful hosts. We arrived late in the afternoon and Molly greeted us with a lovely and heartwarming smile. The garden is breathtaking and very well taken care of and though still looks traditional and natural.

Our room was more a little apartment and was very nice and cosy. The entrance led into a little living room with a mini bar, complimentary sherry, lots of books and huge windows pointing to the south to watch the sunset. From the living room a little "hallway" led to the sleeping room and the bathroom. The shower and bathroom were large; the bed in the sleeping room comfortable. The place was very clean.

As soon as we had arranged ourselves in our room Molly invited us for a sundowner and asked us for our breakfast wishes. was very helpful, telling us a lot about South Africa, the Addo Elephant Park and the history of the Colonial and showed us the lovely property.

For dinner we went to Hazel's kitchen, a recommedation from Molly. One of the best places we had been during our complete journey.

Molly's breakfast was delicious. We had eggs the style we wanted with vegetables and potatoes, a large portion of fresh exotic fruit, yoghurt, coffee, a choice of homemade juices.

As mentioned, we only stayed for one night and left after breakfast to go to the Addo Elephant Park. If you want to stay for longer, Connor offers 2 tours per day (one in the morning, one in the evening) to the Addo Elephant Park. He gave us detailed information on how to drive to the park and which places to go - and also some insider tipps.

Our conclusion is, that we would definitely return to the Colonial on Arundel and then would definitely stay for a couple of days.

The Colonial guesthouse really made our trip to South Africa - and believe me - there was a lot of competition!

From our first email enquiry to our leaving the attention to detail and service were fabulous. Molly provided us with excellent suggestions to get the most from our short stay in The Addo area; these included an unforgettable elephant back safari, a wonderful evening of tribal dancing and a great safari with her husband, Connor - an absolute Gent.

The welcome was great with tea and homemade cookies - all meals were catered to our requests, well prepared and presented in a warm friendly manner.

The accomodation was fabulous- a suite each for myself and son (aged 7) and my mum and daughter (aged 9). They were well stocked with a good variety of complimentary drinks and goodies - even a scrolled story on the bed.

The pool was great, having both suites that The Colonial has, meant that we had the private use of this - which the children took full advantage of.

The hosts really go out of their way to welcome you - put it this way - we're still talking about them 4months later! and plan to return in 2008!

I would really recommend Addo as a great place to visit in South Africa and if looking for accomdation then The Colonial [--------------------------] is the place to stay.

This was our second visit, and as expected it just gets better each time.

We had just travelled fron Natal where we had stayed at the Oyster Box, where every thing was superb.

We met Moly and Connor on arrival, they really are remarkable hosts and settled us into our beautiful suite. We had an early night and loved the sound of tractors and the noises of the farm, a reminder that we were away from the city, just charming.

We woke to the most amazing breakfast, creamy, delicious scrambled eggs on hot buttered toast, and every other condiment you could possibly want. Fresh orange juice and the best marmalade!

The main original house is just that... original, with beautiful furniture and polished antiques, beautifully kept and cool and soothing in atmosphere. After breakfast we had a dip in the lovely pool, just perfect, quiet and surrounded by beautiful gardens full of Clivia, Agapanthus and chirping birds...bliss!

We felt so safe, travelling in South Africa is a little scary, we were so thrilled to see that security was paramount, and that even our veranda doors and trellis were checked and locked nightly. We slept beautifully on comfortable beds knowing we were safe.

We so appreciated all the small touches, flavoured waters etc, so nice to have these small touches and not run off the mill, we were even given lip balm and tissues for our onward journey.

We were sad to sad good bye to Molly and Connor after 2 blissful days in paradise.
This exeperience was 5 star at 3 star prices.

We will be back soon!

Great hosts and comfortable accommodation.
Set amounst the citrus groves in a garden full of flowers and birdsong. Close to Addo. Don't miss a game drive with Conor and take Molly's advice and visit the dunes.
Excellent breakfasts too!

Response from coerney, Owner at The Colonial on Arundel
Responded 10 Nov 2016
Hello Sarah and Andrew. Thank you for taking the time to post a review on The Colonial. We are so pleased that you enjoyed the charm of our garden and surrounds and that the drive with Conor was a worthwhile one, after all the many safaris that you have done throughout Africa. We love sending guests to the dunes as they are truly an awesome sight, and often you find yourself there on your own, save for a few fishermen. I appreciate your comment on the standard of the breakfast but wondered if you could expound on the fact that, although you found your bedroom comfortable, it did not live up to the standards you were looking for? It is always our mission at The Colonial to strive to make things better for our guests, in every way possible, but we prefer to maintain the rooms with a colonial style suited to the period in which the house was originally designed.....1930s Colonial. We have therefore furnished the rooms with solid wood and classic style furnishings, but put in modern bathroom units and added the comfort of a private lounge, verandah and pool for each suite. Your input and suggestions, therefore, in this regard would be invaluable. Enjoy the rest of your SA stay. Kind regards Molly, Conor and of course Marley.

The Colonial on Arundel is an old (but very well maintained and not worn out at all!) farm house surrounded by a beautiful garden. It fits the area perfectly! Everything was very clean, we felt perfectly safe and the location to the Addo park is great. The breakfast was delicious and we felt home from the very first place.
The hosts Molly and Connor are two wonderful and warmhearted persons. We received the "warmest south african welcome" throughout our journey of SA at the Colonial on Arundel. The two did everything to make our stay as pleasant as possible - including lots of little unexpected attentions. Don't worry if you are a bit afraid of dogs (like my wife is :)), their dog Marley is very calm and nice and you won't even recognize him being there.
Our game drive through the Addo park with Connor was entertaining, educational and informative: We saw lots of different animals, learned a lot about the wildlife and had a fun time - It couldn't have been better!
We cannot do more than highly recommend the Colonial on Arundel and wish Molly, Connor & Marley all the best for their future!

Molly and Conor run the Colonial like true professionals. Conor is an avid and extremely knowledgable Addo tour guide and Molly ensures that all guests receive a hearty, home cooked breakfast, comfortable accommodation and recommendations to other attractions and stopping places in the area. We could not have managed without her individual, detailed maps to Schotia and Daniell Cheetah Project.
Our 3n B&B package included 2 evening meals at local restaurants, with return transport, (Hazel's was outstanding with a wide variety of African game on the menu) a half day safari with Conor at Addo, and an afternoon and evening (including an excellent dinner) at Schotia Private Game Reserve. Both drives were fantastic, each very different, but complemented the other very well.
Our 3 days passed by all too quickly and our only regret was that we did not stay longer.

Having first stayed with Molly and Conor at The Colonial 6 years ago and subsequently visited a further 3 times, we can say that our recent stay was just as wonderful and superb as the first. Attention to detail, wonderful warm welcome, helpful and very professional yet maintaining a charm of friendliness that only makes you feel so at home in no time. Molly's breakfasts are a joy, refreshing and filling. Conor regales you with stories of South Africa and if you go on a tour of Addo with him, you can only know you will come back with so much knowledge and experience of both flora and fauna. The elephants know him and come up close to greet him. He is a joy to spend 4 hours with. So all in all we can highly recommend The Colonial for an unforgettable and joyous stay.

We loved our 2 nights with Molly and Connor! This is a very well appointed accommodation with an outstanding breakfast. Molly and Connor are a wealth of information and helped insure our self drive safari in Addo would be memorable. They also directed us to the superb restaurant Hazel's. This is a must stop for dinner if you are in the area.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Colonial and we're very well taken care of by our charming hosts, Molly and Connor. The settings of this place are magnificent and the rooms were very generous (suites actually). We took the game drive at Addo Elephant Park with Connor and this was also a very worthwhile experience. I loved the stories he told us about the wildlife in general and elephants in particular. Highly recommended! The breakfast and everything else was alosverygood and even washing our car was part of the service. We will come here again on our next trip.

Dear Astrid and Rene Thank you for your message via Tripadvisor this week. We hope that you have had a good summer this year. With regard to the query about your jackets, it is with regret that we must inform you that we have in fact closed The Colonial on Arundel at the end of our summer season after 12 years in business and retired to Natal. At that stage all unclaimed guest items were donated to local charity as it was impossible for us to continue holding them and transferring them with us to this new location. I do not recall having heard back from you after the middle of January with regard to my sending these items on to you in Germany after your queried the cost for this process. We trust that you will understand these circumstances. Kind regards Molly & Conor O'Hagan Ward
