Arguably the most scenically beautiful region of Malawi, The Thyolo district forms the heart of Malawi's tea producing region with rolling hills of immaculately cultivated, emerald green plantations and some of the oldest estates in the country. With magnificent views of Mount Mulanje and the Lower Shire valley to the west, Satemwa enjoys a temperate climate of the Shire Highlands and relaxed ambiance of a by-gone era. Visitors to this corner of Malawi cannot but help to be caught up in the colonial magic of the area and diverse scenery which ranges from tropical evergreen forests to riverine thickets and rolling hills. Huntingdon House was built in the 1920's and the estate has been in the Cathcart Kay family for generations with members of the family still running the tea and coffee production of the estate. The grand old colonial style house has been tastefully restored as a joint venture between the Satemwa Tea Estate and the Ulendo Travel Group.

We were the only guests in this large colonial style house and gardens in the middle of a tea plantation. Totally unique.
Each of the rooms is distinctively furnished with antiques and views over the gardens. We had Father's room which had a four poster bed and enormous bath.

Croquet on the lawn and a trip to the hilltop picnic site for sundowners made us feel like travellers to a different era (not just a different continent!)

We were very well looked after by the staff who were very friendly. Tasty dinner, breakfast and lunch all served in different locations! Fires lit at night for a cosy atmosphere.

We stayed only one night but managed to fit a lot in. We were taken on a tour of the plantation to see the full process of tea and coffee production and we also did a tea tasting.
Although we were very busy (through choice!) it would be wonderful to simply relax and enjoy the property.

The only thing which stops Huntingdon House being perfect is the absence of a swimming pool- but perhaps I'm being greedy!

The perfect definition of luxury and isolation. Having been at Huntingdon house a couple of times for day trips. I love the place, perfect to spend time out reading, catching up with friends or to catch that writing deadline whilst sipping on fine Satemwa tea and some good food. I finally decided to spend a night there ... my room the chapel, i think is the best room at Huntingdon house and highly recommend you specify “the chapel” when making the booking. It’s just beautiful and perfect for that idyllic escape...

If you looking for a day trip, around Blantyre city, I highly recommend Huntingdon house !!

We had a fantastic stay here just after Christmas in December 2020. What a beautiful place! There is something very magical about Huntingdon House and you can feel history all around you. Great rooms with comfy beds and nice bathrooms (we stayed in Mother's Room), beautiful landscaped gardens where you can always find a spot to read your book, delicious food and great staff. We were very looked after and definitely didn't go hungry - afternoon tea in the garden was great. We did a Tea Tasting & Factory Tour which was very interesting. If you go, definitely walk/drive up to the picnic spot for sundowners. Would highly recommend!

Absolutely amazing place to stay - couldn't recommend highly enough. Extremely interesting getting to learn about the tea estates with such knowledgeable local guides who even let us pick the tea and meet the local workers. The house and surrounding grounds are so relaxing and the food was probably the best we had in our entire stay in Malawi. The host Annette and all of the staff were so nice and made us feel incrdibly welcome too and went out of their way to ensure our trip was as enjoyable as possible and even helped us with planning for the rest of our trip!

Only stayed for one night arriving mid-day. The long track from the main road was particularly muddy and sliddy on arrival and even more so the next day after all night rain so happy to have a 4x4. Anticipated doing a few activities but only option was tea tasting. That said it was an interesting way to spend some time. House is atmospheric and peaceful, particularly as we were only guests staying. Fixed menu dinner was good for us and breakfast enjoyable. Unfortunately no gin for pre-dinner drinks and selected wine was not available as the only bottle had been drunk by other lunch guests. Power was cut multiple times during the evening/night but candles/lights were provided. No wifi available.

Beautiful colonial feel property with relaxing gardens. It was really interesting to do the guided walk around the estate to see the various tea and coffee growing areas and learn more about the plants involved. The tea tasting was worth doing too as was sundowners at the picnic spot with great views of sunset. It was lovely to have breakfast on the veranda outside our room overlooking the gardens. All in all a great couple of nights.

I spent two nights at Huntingdon House including a couple of hours strolling on the tracks through the tea plantations. Very "zen". Lovely atmosphere, pleasant and helpful staff. One picks up the 1930s vibe around the manor and it is very pleasant indeed. Highly recommended to go for a stroll or to join a guided tour. I would easily return next time in Blantyre which is less than two hours drive from this lovely place.

We enjoyed learning about tea production and tasting so many different types. Lunch was lovely and the house itself is beautiful. The staff were really nice. We walked in from the getting dropped off by the bus on the road, which was very nice, despite the rain. A bit pricy.

Had a lovely couple of nights here. So relaxing and being the only people there it was very quiet.
I especially liked having breakfast out on the terrace.
The trip out for sundowners was fun and the trip to the tea factory was very interesting. Tasting 17 different teas!
The surrounding areas is immaculate. Tea for as far as the eye can see.
