Venue great. We had a beautiful view of the mountains and the room was very comfortable especially the very large bed which suits me as I am quite tall.. The shower was excellent, one of the few that you could turn the water on without burning yourself, and had plenty of space to dry yourself in the shower space. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed the Houw Hoek walking trail.

Suggestions. Dining room looking tired and flies a nuisance. I am sure there could be more walking trails from the Hotel.

Absolutely enjoyed my stay. Didn't feel like sitting at restaurant so I called reception who was ever helpful and reminded me that I can use room service 24 hours. Ordered dinner from the restaurant via room service and food came under 20 minutes.

The newish additions (rooms and venue) to the hotel don't really fit with the title of "South Africa's oldest hotel". The older rooms are our preference, especially with the fireplace at this time of year. The provided wood was very wet and we had to buy kindling to get it going. The staff are very friendly and helpful. We thought the food was a bit of a let down as some of it appears to be bought frozen. e.g. hashbrowns, chips. The pork chops were very thin and therefore quite overcooked. The breakfast was a good selection. The walks / MTB trails give fantastic view points of the valley.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback, this is valuable as we are always looking to improve. The fireplaces are popular in winter, some of our guests just love a crackling fire, we are happy to hear that we gave great service and that we could help. We will pass your feedback on the food to the chef. Please do visit again.

This was our worst hotel stay in years, a very big disappointment!!
On reservation: I requested a superior room on the website, after paying I was informed that the room selected was not available, but they will put us in an "upstairs room".
I wrote e-mails asking what an "upstairs room" meant, I never got a reply back.
On arrival: It turns out that an upstairs room is in fact a family room where we had to share the entrance and balcony with two other families with babies. I took a photograph of the view out of the bedroom window, which I can forward to you and which I showed to the staff: filthy alley, open wires, shocking to say the least. We then left the hotel to attend a wedding in the area.
When we wanted to take a shower the next morning @ 07:00: no hot water. I phoned reception who replied that they will send someone. On following up 20 minutes later, I was told that maintenance only starts working @ 08:00. I asked why this was not conveyed on my first call, the lady replied that it was not her that answered in the first place.
"Maintenance" then arrived to tell us the geyser had tripped, he switched it on but it will take half hour to an hour to heat up.
On leaving: The staff was not interested in my complaints, no apology, I asked the manager to phone me, this did not happen to this date. We left without a shower, and without breakfast as we could not stomach a breakfast based on the treatment since arrival. It is a disgrace that the oldest hotel in South Africa has been run into the ground like this.

The family room I booked was ok. It was clean and had a few of the basics such as a mini fridge, aircon and coffee/tea facilities. A few things to note. The room did not have soap in the bathroom and only had 1 drinking glass. We used the cups to drink our water. The room door was also open when I checked in just after 3pm. Although its their way of doing things (once the room is cleaned the door stays open), I prefer to enter a room with the door closed. I did get a good nights rest as it was quiet. The buffet breakfast was wonderful as a wide variety was provided.

We had to stay over as we attended our close friends wedding. I've been following your hotels socials for a few years so was keen & excited to visit!

However that was rather short lived! It was mine and my husband's 1st time staying in a 3 star hotel so we are used to too notch everything. Unfortunately this was not the case at your establishment.

Your rooms need serious upgrades ie: bathroom facilities, moldy showers are not a good look for any type of guest accommodation. The bed was absolutely horrible, I had no sleep.

Saturday evening we tried to order a pizza to which we were told the kitchen was closed.. This was ok but having the gentleman tell me to rather call for service from my room to which I asked will they be able to serve me food, he said no so not sure why I needed to call room service 0_o

This was a 1st for us and a last, I still don't get what the hype is about when people say they going to houw hoek, maybe we missed it or I'm pretty sure It cause we used to greater, this experience didn't sit well with us.

Upgrade your rooms, especially to let out any odours. The buffet breakfast was also average.

Beautiful views of nature going around, the space has SO much potential!

Happy with what was offered for the kids. They had a ball! Amazing food & facilities. Just a few things we were looking forward to like squash wasn't on offer & we weren't informed. Also half the game machines in games room was out of order. The safe in the rooms were also out of order & the plumbing in the toilets not strong enough to flush & the smell on the back patio (clearly a leak) Hope this gets fixed.

Stayed over for a night whilst supporting a rowing regatta nearby. The hotel is very clean, the beds were very comfortable with nice quality linen. Breakfast was included in the stay and was very good with a tasty omelette made to order. Bar staff were happy, friendly and helpful.

We've been to Houw Hoek a few times. The state of the rooms is just disasterous. For anyone out there reading this review, avoid room 40 at all costs. The hotel proudly advertises that it all began in 1779. Well, this room hasn't been touched since way back then. A safe that didn't work, a telephone that didn't work. Dirty curtains and furniture from 1779 in the room. A moderation would be the generator that hums all day and night outside the bathroom window. A lovely added feature as opposed to listening to the sound of nature.

The food is good, the service is average. Most waitering staff stare all you blankly when placing an order.

The rooms are dirty, the facilities are in an extremely poor state. The arcarde games upstairs above the lounge - half don't event work.

The table tennis bats have seen better days, the tennis court is in such poor condition you never actually know which way the ball will bounce.

Before spending more millions on restaurant refurbs and solar panels, perhaps spend a few thousand on the rooms to make them a little more comfortable?

We were disappointed with our stay for two reasons
1. The room we were checked into, looked out over the building site of the new Spa, so the view from our balcony looked out over a trench being dug by a team of workers, which was hardly what we were expecting when we booked at a quiet country hotel
2. This is a common complaint about almost every hospitality establishment we have been to. It seems that COVID is being used as an excuse to offer shoddy service. Our lunch was lovely, however once served to our table we were ignored, no-one came to see if our drinks were ok, we were not offered a coffee after the meal and we had to go looking for someone to do our bill. Similarly at breakfast, we arrived at around 8am the staff were still gleaning the grill where eggs are made and we had to wait before we could order eggs, surely everything should be ready when breakfast starts.
I would have thought that after the pain of lockdown all hospitality venues would go out of their way to make guests feel welcome and want to return, sadly this was not our experience.
