But if you’re looking for something a little unique – and more than a little exquisite – we thoroughly recommend a stay! My husband and I just returned from two wonderful nights at Old Whyly and could not have asked for more – or recommend it higher. We arrived rather frazzled (over two years since having time off our two small children, thanks to the pandemic) and it was honestly the first time we have been able to properly switch off and actually relax in so long. Apart from the historic charm and stunning beauty of Old Whyly, the peace of the place is palpable and from the moment we stepped in we felt so looked after and truly away from it all. Sarah’s hospitality was second-to-none, she even braved the recent storm to make sure she had the best ingredients when we asked if we could have dinner for a second night (as the first had been so good!). Dinner was AMAZING (three courses, perfectly matched: beyond-delicious duck, heavenly chicken.. plus divine starters and puddings!), I had to stop myself asking for every single recipe! Breakfast was equally scrumptious (freshly squeezed orange juice, a full-English as good it should be (but rarely is), gorgeous homemade jams and marmalade, beautiful poached plums and yoghurt. We shall cherish the memories of our evening G&T’s by the fire, our lovely chats with Sarah, the peaceful nights’ sleep and the cut-above food (and of course our pat or three with Puzzle the cocker spaniel), plus our walks in the wonderful surroundings. Sarah’s recommendations of things to do, places to walk and local pubs, were also spot on. I don’t say this lightly as die-hard Londoners – but our stay with Sarah has even inspired us to consider moving to the countryside from London! The only negative I can think of was having to leave. We shall definitely be back.…
Old Whyly is a beautiful Georgian set in a lovely garden. The accommodation is very comfortable and spacious, with attention to detail. Sarah and her staff give you a warm welcome and a delicious dinner if requested. The large round dining room table makes the mealtimes sociable and convivial.
My wife and I stayed at Old Whyly for two nights. We were met with a warm welcome. Sarah was a wonderful host. So much thought had gone into every aspect of the B and B experience. Nothing was too much trouble, the food was excellent and serviced with style, but in a very relaxed and personable way. From the tea and cake on arrival, to the G n T on the lovely terrace and yummy dinner, the relaxing swim in the pool all set in a beautiful house and gardens, we had a wonderful stay. We would recommend Old Whyly to anyone wanting to treat themselves to a night or two away from home.
Stayed here for 3 nights for a rest and escape post lockdown. Sarah is a wonderful host we were made to feel very welcome. Our room was very comfortable and clean, with a lovely view. The house and grounds are beautiful. Sarah is an amazing cook , the food was delicious. Interesting conversations over dinner with fellow guests made for a very relaxing and enjoyable break. Lea the housekeeper was very efficient and our needs were always met. We look forward to returning in the winter.
You are stunned by Old Whyly even as you approach, as it is such a beautiful building. The gardens and planting are superb, and it took me 10 minutes just to get to the front door, I was taking so many photographs! Sarah is a charming host, and her house is impeccably decorated. When we arrived we were offered a fabulous lemon drizzle cake with tea. If you have dinner in, (which I recommend as Sarah’s cooking is restaurant standard), do be prepared to mingle and eat with other guests. This was actually fun! (And I’m normally quite antisocial ) There is delicious tea in the room, and proper sheets and blankets on the bed- not duvets! I would not hesitate to recommend and I hope to go back before too long. It was a truly restful, and in every sense enjoyable stay.
We came here for a weekend retreat from London and it was well worth it. The house itself is stunning with spacious rooms and beautiful gardens in a very quiet spot that is superbly located for local walks. Sarah was a charming conversationalist, and a warm, and helpful host, with in-depth knowledge of the best places to eat and visit in the area including recommended walks. Sarah is also an excellent cook. Highlights of our stay included drinks by the fire made specially for us, tea and cake following our day out in the cold, and the delicious dinner prepared with our dietary needs taken into account. The South Downs are a beautiful part of England and there could not be a better place to explore this area from than the Old Whyly - the perfect blend of stately and comfortable. Would definitely stay here again and would be very keen to return in summer to experience the stunning garden. Also an ideal place to stay for those attending Glyndebourne. Highly recommend. Thank you, Sarah!…
Staying here for 2 nights recently to explore an area we hadn't visited before. Greeted by our host, Sarah,we were offered tea and lovely lemon cake in the drawing room. Our room was huge with everything we needed and overlooking the front garden where we could see the squirrels and birds in the trees. The gardens are beautiful, colourful and so well tended. It was a pleasure walking around exploring them. There are plenty of places to sit too and take it all in. Sarah cooked a delightful 3 course dinner each night which was amazing and so well presented in a lovely candlelit dining room. Canopés and drinks served before and a great wine list at really good prices to tempt you. Breakfast was lovely too with an array of choices to begin followed by a full english if you choose to. The poached eggs were the best I've had and the 'proper' bread toast and fruit compote are to note. The house itself is stunning, beautifully decorated with gorgeous antique furniture which fits so well. Sarah is attentive without being imposing. Just what you need on holiday. It is very quiet here, no road noise to keep you awake. Thank you Sarah for having us, we hope to return some day. Julie…
Great stay we couldn’t have wished for more. We booked the whole house for a family wedding down the road, both Laya and Sarah were charming hosts. They could not have been more helpful. We would not hesitate to recommend a stay at Old Whyly. Book it ASAP
Such a beautiful House and gardens- it was the perfect city escape we hoped for and more. Would highly recommend to anyone. A warm welcome from Sarah and Puzzle (the dog) with tea and lemon drizzle cake. Our room was beautiful, very spacious with an en suite. We went to a great pub for dinner, the food was exceptional and good cosy pub vibes. The breakfast was delicious and we would love to return with friends to enjoy more of Sarah's cooking. 5 stars all round!
This is a hidden gem with the most stylish rooms in a beautiful Georgian house. Sarah is an exceptional host. We were fortunate enough to be able to have the use of all the bedrooms for the weekend of our daughter’s wedding in Sussex. Sarah, ably assisted by Leya, provided us with excellent breakfasts, and delicious evening meals. We were made to feel very welcome and felt very relaxed throughout the whole of the wedding weekend. The bedrooms were large, very clean, excellent showers (good water pressure), and comfortable beds. The gardens are really well maintained. A first class B&B
