Take a drive into the countryside to this destination & you’ll be surprised. Decorated with Thai statues, other paraphernalia and set in a lush garden, with a swimming pool, you’ll find the restaurant and accommodation, if you want it.
The food took quite a while to be served because it was freshly made & therefore delicious. Crispy duck was the winning dish. The staff were polite and friendly too.

We arrived at Kai Thai Rothbury Country Lodge with modest expectations and first impressions were good.
The gardens are lush and still a work in progress with lots of new development going on, the reception was warm and friendly and were directed to our room "Hibiscus"...it is hidden away in the upper edge of the garden with lots of privacy. HOWEVER on arrival at our room we noticed lots of wanton litter scattered around our immediate area...the room servicing staff just dump the rubbish into the surrounding bush and don't dispose of it properly...we saw toilet roll holders, cigarette stompies, candles, soap, beverage cans and bottles...straight away our hackles were up and we duly informed the reception who sent someone to do a quick clean-up while my wife and I booked into the Spa for a 2 hour couples session. The Traditional Thai Spa session was a true body wrenching experience and the real highlight of our stay.

On our return to the chalet we noticed that it was a half assed attempt by the staff to clean up the immediate bush area so we duly cleaned the area ourselves and left the pile of rubbish on the chalet stoep so the staff could see for themselves the extent of the refuse we as paying guests collected. Its so sad when people just don't do their jobs properly and the hotel management are as much to blame for there acceptance of low work standards.

The dinner experience on the veranda was magical with the lighting and night sounds...the menu is traditional Thai, mostly curry type dishes which suited us just fine. Another bug bear of ours was the lack of urgency in clearing tables after people had finished...at breakfast we noticed beer bottles still by the pool from the previous evening(UNACCEPTABLE).

Its such a pity that these details are not addressed properly...a little bit of staff training would surely go a long way to make this a pristine place to visit...it has the potential to be a gem...In Disney Land an employee is fired if they walk past a piece of litter and not pick it up.

I hope this constructive criticism is taken on board by powers that be as we would dearly like to return for the Spa session.

Seamus & Lisa McGuigan.

We just visited and were prepared to leave after we saw the tired state of the rooms, but we stayed for the amazing red Thai curry and had a few beers and this allowed us to see things with beer goggels on. The rooms are seriously lacking, with dirty slippers and broken cupboards and tired jacuzzies, we stayed in the Jacaranda room. the Massages by the ladies were amazing and we did 2- 1 hour sessions which we highly recommend.

Amazing Thai lunch, spa treatments outside next to the pool, book a massage treatment in advance to avoid disappointment on the day if they fully booked.
The scenery is splendid and so relaxing. One can spend a day here or book an overnight stay.

After booking a couples night stayover package,i decided to have a look at the reviews of Kai Thai Rothebury.

It was so shocking. Which kinda of made me want to cancel, however i decided to go myself to experience it.I had been there about 4 years ago. So i thought it might not be as bad.

We were welcomed by a lovely lady named Nicky..it seems she does everything at the place, answers the calls does the bookings sees to guest, cooks the food?? The rooms were lovely at first but then we had some drainage issues.. the toilet was flooding shower and toilet drainage were not working:(

Jacuzzi was cold so couldnt use it.

But that wasnt the worst of the place, the worst were the supposed 'standin' massage therapist.

Thai ladies welcomed us but as soon as we advised them what type of massage we wanted, its as if they did not know english or understand us at all.

They were completely oblivious to the fact that we all requested different massages..example Thai,Swedish,Oil ect.

The chatted throughout the massage laughing and speaking thai. But the time we left the room we all needed another massage as those ladies hurt all of us including our partners. I did not want a Thai massage i asked for swedish. They did the same for all of us .

It was the worst 60mins

I wouldnt refer anyone to go there.Very dissapointing.

The service was non existent, the food was appalling , the staff are no where to be seen , the outside furniture was broken and tatty , the snacks after our massage were cold and had been there for ages , and this venue looks nothing like the pics on the website … so disappointing for a pre Valentine spoil from my boyfriend, we shall never return

I'm an avid TripAdvisor user so I had read all the bad reviews below but luckily a good friend had recommended the place so I booked anyway. The couple's retreat valued at R1800 at the time we went was a steal! My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our anniversary in a relaxed environment.

Yes it's true Nicky runs the show but so what...she is always available. She even gave me her number to call or whatsapp her if need be. However our waitress for both supper and breakfast was very friendly too, Chipo.

Our room, Hibiscus was adjacent to the lounge which might be a bit too close but it was fine for us. The jacuzzi room was spacious with Victorian chairs as well as an area to lie down. There was a kettle, a bar fridge (empty), a fan, a heater and incense. The jacuzzi was clean and perfectly heated for us. There are signs that suggest that ultimate temperature is after dinner. The room did smell damp and I hope they can get better ventilation in there. The bathroom was fine and the shower water hot. You might want to carry your own soap if you're finicky.

Our bed was clean and comfortable and very warm with both an electric blanket and a 2 wall heaters. There was a sofa and a chair to sit. The decor was hues of red, burnt orange and although I haven't been to Thailand yet the bamboo head board and other curios did make me feel like I had travelled. Loads of cupboard space. The TV wasn't the best but it's not that kind of trip. If you really want to watch a soccer match, like we did, there's a bar called Murphys law about 30min drive away with lots of tvs.

The grounds seem unkept as you drive in but the pool area is clean and lovely. See my pics please.

The masseuses were great. I had a Thai massage and Pretty was very friendly but more importantly she gave me a fabulous massage. My husband had an aromatherapy massage but he slept right through it. The other 2 couple guests we saw had been several times and said they would always return. They knew the staff by name and felt very at home.

The food was good. We loved the spring rolls and veg soup which didn't take long. I liked the taste of my green curry but it only had peppers in and I'd hoped for a wider variety of vegetables. My husband enjoyed the pulled pork. The banana fritters were quite nice but the fruit platter not as impressive. We were allowed our own champagne and wine with no corkage fee. There was a bottle of JC Le roux on our bed which was unexpected :-)

It's not a 5 star place nor does it claim to be but the value for money, friendly staff, tranquil grounds, good food and relaxing massages made it fantastic for us.

I'm going to post another review called To Thai for 2 so I can share more than 10pics.

Please do not waste time or money at this place, it is extremely run down and is in need of a serious upgrade. It feels as if we stayed at a 90's Thai brothel.

The massages were horrible and the ladies massaging us were laughing and talking throughout the entire massage.

Only one lady, Nicky runs this place and it is as if she is overworked and underpaid. From housekeeping to cooking, she has to do it all!

I will never recommend your waste your money here at all!

I was under the impression this place underwent maintenance a while back as that was the response when I wanted to book on a previous occasion.

Full of expectations I booked overnight accommodation and some spa treatments for my husband and I this past weekend. There was no hot water in our room after our spa treatment. W were told (after asking) that the actual spa burnt down on Tuesday 14/07/2015 and that the lady forgot to tell us.

We were told that the water will be on later that evening just so we could take a shower. After coming in from dinner that evening there was NO water - not even cold water.

As this was supposed to be a romantic birthday weekend away, not even having the minimum necessities was VERY disappointing.

We left it there as we were tired and wanted to go to bed. At 00:35 one of the dogs was barking so persistently that we were going crazy, nothing helped and the dog kept on barking for an hour - again disappointed.

The unbelievable thing is, the next morning we went to settle the bill but the actual lady that helped us the previous day was not there. After explaining the situation all we got was an "Oh, eish." and we were charged full price.

The garden and fencing is not maintained and there were people going through the "electric fencing" coming inside spa ground - unsafe and in a terrible condition.

This place needs maintenance but a whole lot of it. I will not recommend the accommodation although the 2 stars are for the spa treatments that were nice.
