We booked for lunch having been before in July which was okay, we thought we would try the royal again. What a great choice we made. The standard in food had gone up massively! Everything looked stunning. The choice was limited but I would say acceptable as was executed so well. Note the smoked marrow mash was to die for!

book yourself in , sit back and enjoy. Queen Victoria would still be impressed and she would be amused. The Royal must surely be one of the top hotels in England ,if not the whole of British Isles. We LOVE it.

The staff were exceptionally pleasant and efficient and and made time to welcome us and make sure we were happy with service. Our room was clean clean and tidy. Both the breakfast and evening meals were presented well and impressed by the evening chef’s menu.

We stayed here the last 3 nights of our holiday, as there was not the accommodation available for the whole week. The hotel is very old, but stunningly beautiful, retaining the character of the period. It has impressive grounds, with a heated outdoor swimming pool, which unfortunately we did not have the time to use. The bedroom we were in was a decent size, furnished and decorated to a high standard, retaining the Victorian ambience. We had a good sized bathroom which had a bath, with a shower within the bath. Absolutely fabulous breakfast served in the gorgeous dining room. All staff extremely friendly, providing excellent service. We also stayed one night for dinner, which was a delicious fine dining experience. We only managed to get a table after going on a cancellation list, so I'd recommend booking well in advance. We loved the whole of our stay, which has given us lots of lovely memories.

We stayed at the Royal in what was described as a "saver room" closer to the road and in need of some renovation. The room was marvellous and quiet. We didn' thear the traffic although we were on the roadside. The food was excellent as one would expect from a 2 star Michellin starred restaurant. The staff were so helpful. The swimming pool was heated as described. The hotel provided just what we needed, a complete break away from it all, within easy reach of a beach (if you can walk up steep hills!)
