After a year long refurbishment ending in 2018, the latest addition to the Leeu Collection portfolio is Linthwaite House, a 36-room country house retreat overlooking Lake Windermere in England’s scenic Lake District. Breathtaking views, private gardens and woodland grounds, and an award-winning restaurant - Henrock by Simon Rogan, make for an idyllic stay.

Went last year for Wedding Anniversary and had to save up to go again on my Birthday. Already Planning for next Years and Partners Birthday with our 3 Boys and their girlfriends. Won't be able to stop at the hotel as we only have a modest income but will be visiting Kenrock the food is excellent and the service is best bar non and want to show our family the hotel and grounds and curated art as pictures don't do it justice. The Breakfast Maitre' d Simon i think was so attentive and anticipated every need. The only down side to last years visit was the sausage at breakfast, but not this time they were really nice, I think they must have changed them (Happy Bunny)

My wife and I stayed in the hotel for two nights and it was the perfect Mini moon. The staff made us feel so welcome and special right from the beginning. Very genuine and lovely people! We stayed in one of the outside lodges. They are very cosy and romantic. The bedroom is separate to the lounge space, which has a fireplace which was great after being out in the cold weather. We hadn't booked a table but they were able to find space for us. (Very lucky as it was a Saturday night!) The meal was fantastic and the restaurant staff were very knowledgable with their recommendations. The grounds are spectacular and the hotel itself is beautiful. We cannot wait until our next visit.

Very poor guest relations. Booked a room and was emailed by the hotel 5 days before arriving demanding upfront payment to avoid room being cancelled. Then hotel advised they cannot provide dinner at reasonable time as restaurant fully booked with hotels guests and only 2 tables of non-residents. Wholly dissatisfied and cancelled whole booking and requested full refund. I was left with a bad taste in my mouth and I haven’t even been there!

Nice enough accommodation and great food, but poor customer service. Every interaction with the bookings team and/ or management feels like they aren’t bothered about customer experience (but are very bothered about there bottom line). When you are spending c.£1,000 on a meal and nights stay you expect world class customer service - I would recommend finding that at the Gilpin or Samling instead.

Response from Karen Irving, General Manager at Linthwaite House
Responded 28 Oct 2023
Good morning Robert B Thank you for taking the time to write a review, I was disappointed to read your comments as this is certainly not how I would expect you to feel, our aim is that our guests leave after enjoying their stay and having received warm, friendly service. I would very much appreciate if I could chat to you in person so you can advise what happend on this occasion and I can investigate further with the team. If this would be convenient, please email me directly on karen.irving@linthwaitehouse.com. Thank you again Kind regards Karen

While the grounds are absolutely stunning everything else was lack luster. It started with the woefully inadequate parking accommodations. When I reviewed Linthwaite prior to booking our stay I viewed beautiful rooms and I thought I had booked one of those beautiful rooms but in actuality I received a smaller room in the old section of the hotel. It sounded like our room was right above the kitchen, very loud and it clearly needed renovations. In addition the room was extremely hot so we had to open the windows, which we could hear the other guests in the adjoining rooms. Very noisy night!!!! I really feel like I got a bate a switch. The meal we had booked in their dinning room was INCREDIBLY slow. After 4 hours of sitting at the table we finally got up and left before the meal was finished serving. The worst experience I have ever had at a restaurant. The staff’s excuse was they were overwhelmed. I can honestly say that I will not be back.

Unfortunately we never actually got the chance to stay here. The reason I am writing this is because it’s the second time that the hotel has let us down with a booking. We booked to stay in January of this year and because we are heading to wales we booked 3 months in advance as we like a secure care park. Unfortunately the hotel cancelled saying it was due to refurbishment however because they didn’t do it at the time of booking it left us with very little choice and infact we tried several hotels before finding one. Unfortunately yesterday the hotel has just done the same to us again, we have had it booked for months and they have told us they will be closed, but why take bookings and mess people around? Now I am not saying this is not a beautiful hotel as We stayed here years ago and it was, but unfortunately being let down once I can understand but to do it twice is very annoying and for this reason I wouldn’t book again as I would be scared they let me down once again.

We booked Linthwaite House for a special anniversary break and the whole experience was faultless. The hotel is stunning with breathtaking views over Lake Windermere, the staff were warm and so friendly and the food was fantastic. We had dinner in Henrock which was absolutely amazing. All in all, we had a fabulous time and would definitely recommend!

A beautiful hotel set it stunning grounds. The staff are very welcoming and go out of their way to make your stay special. We dined in Henrock and the food and service was impeccable. Breakfast the following morning was very good and the service was excellent. We have read the earlier reviews about breakfast but have to be fair and say we encountered nothing but great service and quality. Any earlier issues have obviously been remedied. This was our third stay in 12 months and we would definitely recommend this hotel. Well done to the team at Linthwaite.

My wife & I stayed at Linthwaite House back in May for two nights, the 6th & 7th, to celebrate my 60th birthday. From the moment we checked in, until the moment we checked out, the experience was wonderful. Our room (no 2, I believe) overlooked the spectacular lake Windermere & all the other magnificent views to be seen. As soon as we arrived, we had a cocktail or two, with some snacks & then explored the grounds, which was lovely. That evening, after a few more cocktails, created by an alchemist of a fellow, we dined at The Henrock, where we we looked after by a marvellous team, lead by James & Andreas, who looked like they’d come straight from the set of a Bond film . Leigh & Xav (the sommelier) , talked through the menu & wines, & gave us some sage advice on the food & the best wine pairings etc. Our food was amazing & served by a young Portuguese couple named Anna & Vitor, who were delightful & a credit to The Henrock. The following day, the weather was fantastic & we spent many an hour playing croquet with some of my family who’d surprised me by turning up for my birthday. That evening, our experience in the restaurant was as good as the first, but with the added extra of a gorgeous birthday cake created by the young pastry chef, which was accompanied by a couple of glasses of Chateau d’ Yquem (vintage 1990), one of the best Sauternes out there! Breakfast on both days was spot on, all the team, both hotel & restaurant, made us feel very special. All in all, a wonderful stay & we will certainly be back… Thank you 🙏

Stayed here with friends for a celebration Having booked we found the hotel does not serve dinner on Mondays and Tuesdays so we dined at the Samling (what a blessing - please refer other review). The only redeeming feature of the Linthwaite is the young gentleman who drives the golf buggy to carry you to your room from reception. He is absolutely excellent and deserves commendation - even pitched in to help clear breakfast pots and wipe tables in the restaurant when they ran into problems. We sat at our pre booked breakfast table (they tell you what time you can come for breakfast!) and then waited literally an hour at the breakfast table before the food came. Dining room clearly in total chaos. Everyone complaining. When breakfast did come the bacon was hard and dry, the mushrooms dried up, tomato barely grilled, luke warm baked beans in a pot. Toast like rock. Complained to reception afterwards which led to nothing but limp apology - manager was not available to speak to directly … Even the Henrock restaurant where breakfast is served is run down and drab in decor - matching the food. This is so far from the top end hotel experience it claims to be and charges high prices for. A complete fraud. I feel tricked. £805 for a room with dreadful breakfast and bad service. £1600 for the four of us! Never ever again. Does not even deserve one star. Better food at M6 service station …
