Been visiting the Mayflower for decades but the last visit was not good at all. It was very hot so did want a table outside as I have dogs with some shade so needed a table with an sun brolly. But most tables had none. Also the new system of the app is such a faf and not everyone has a smart phone anyway. We were not greeted well at all we felt just a nuisance. So left

Popped in for a late afternoon drink. Went to the bar to be told I had to use the QR code on my table outside to order a drink…what a palaver! This would have been ok but the bar tender was in the process of serving another customer at the bar. Had to go back to the bar because no connection on code. Seems different rules for different customers. Won’t be back!

We booked an outside table on the terrace for 6pm on a Monday night. It was surprisingly busy for a Monday evening, a sign of a good place I thought. We were warmly welcomed at the front door and shown to our table. The menu was as it is online, with some creative dishes. My wife chose two of the inventive creations - Scotch egg of pork, garlic and fennel followed by crab and Mac n cheese. She loved the taste of the scotch egg, and the main dish even more. She said the crab meat had been mixed in with the cheese and macaroni and was delicious. I chose devilled whitebait without the bloody Mary dip as I can't take any alcohol and instead they gave me a tartare dip which included capers and gherkin. For main, I had half a Norfolk chicken and ordered a side of chunky chips to accompany it and the salad leaves it came with. The chicken had a salty rub on its skin which was very tasty and the meat beneath was very succulent. Though I don't like to pay extra for a side and think chips or potatoes should come with a main, I thoroughly enjoyed them and was correct - they were a perfect accompaniment. With half a larger and lime, a pint of lime cordial soda, and a bloody Mary without the vodka, our bill came to £57. That included a 5% service charge which was highly deserved. Thank you

Booked here for evening meal inside the Restaurant with family as a birthday treat as we’d been several times before when visiting the New Forest and had very good meals. When we got there the staff member greeting us didn’t seem to know we HAD booked then offered us outside seating! It was a chilly evening and we refused saying we had booked INSIDE! He went away to check again then came back and agreed we had booked and that our table was inside! After we sat down another staff member came and advised us they weren’t doing starters due to kitchen staff shortages and they could only offer ice cream for dessert as they hadn’t had any deliveries. Caution reigned and we rang the restaurant we’d enjoyed the previous evening and they were able to fit us in at very short notice. We then left. Not sure if I will return.

The mayflower is a beautiful hotel set in a lovely spot overlooking the outer harbour. The outside garden is beautifully done although we only managed one lunch on the terrace under the awning because of the weather. Food was delicious. Highly recommend a stay here.
