Located in the heart of the city centre of Carlisle the hotel is conveniently positioned for those wishing to undertake retail therapy, have a coffee in the cities numerous cafes or a pint of ale in the pubs and bars, also the railway and bus stations are in easy walking distance of the hotel This is a traditional hotel, with the building oozing in history yet I have to say that it has lost some of its past grandeur having become jaded in terms of décor and upkeep, however, the hotels cleanliness was of a high standard in the vast majority of areas. The customer service from the hotel’s team was wonderful, in the most part, with nearly all striving to ensure that guests’ stays were the finest possible. The rooms require some tender loving care and in places updating in terms of décor with furnishings, in some cases, being old and worn out, yet the television was modern and the Wi-Fi was good connectivity and speed. Breakfast was served in a great room with white table cloths producing an air of sophistication and elegance with the buffet selection consisting of good quality ingredients, cooked particularly well. Prices are high for the standard of accommodation offered.

Charming old fashioned hotel in the very heart of the city, near the train station. Numerous shops and places to eat and drink nearby as well as just around the corner from the cathedral. Check in was quick and easy our rooms were ready at 2pm. Receptionist booked us a table in the restaurant for our evening meal. Room was old fashioned but perfectly clean and very warm, bed comfortable, TV had a good range of programmes available. Bathroom was functional with plenty of toiletries and towels. Didn't hear any noise from the corridor, outside noise could be heard from early morning with vehicles outside. Evening meal was lovely the restaurant had quirky decoration. Menu was good and I enjoyed my vegetarian meal. Breakfast was hot and plentiful and gluten free bread was available. Check out was 11am so we did some shopping before going back to the train station. Great hotel if visiting Carlisle

Total shambles. Just spent 2 nights here with our dance group, Friday and Saturday. Left Sunday morning. Arrived Friday hotel was freezing cold felt like it had been shut for weeks. Let's have a drink in the bar we thought. No one serving in there. Asked several times. 40 mins later someone arrived. Evening dinner Friday starters not too bad Main course just like school dinners. Plate piled high with mash potato and refried roast pots. Mixed veg undercooked. Dessert well instant stuff nothing was made. Tea coffee from flask that had been made hours ago. Breakfast. Saturday morning a shambles. Tea coffee in flask type on table. Been there hours as it was cold. Ordered fresh with well done toast had to ask 4 times. It came eventually but toast only done on one side, unbelievable. Dinner Saturday evening worst meal I have ever had. Starter was Pate that had been left in the warm . Mains Warmed up mashed potates warmed up fried pots supposed to be roasts. Half cooked veg which were the same as the night before. Chicken. Well you could not cut it it was so tough. Gravy looked like it had been made from a packet of soup. Most people who ordered it sent it back. Dessert I tried cheesecake again it was soggy on bottom and had been left out for hours. I believe others have registered a complaint ref Saturday night dinner. There are a few PLUS points. Hotel room we had was very good and so was room service and staff . Problem is lack of management and leadership throughout the hotel. Particularly in dining and bar area. This is our 3rd year here and although it was never very good in dining areas it has been much worse this year. Especially the terrible food. Needless to say we won't be coming back next year. £400 for 2 nights is expensive for the poor standard offered. Very dissappointed.

Exceptionally friendly and helpful staff - on Reception, in the Bar, and in the Breakfast Room. Restaurant was closed on the Sunday evening, but the full menu was available in the bar, and we had an excellent meal. We decided on staying in a Club Room, which was spacious, quiet and had been recently renovated. Hotel is right in the centre of Carlisle, near to the Cathedral (which is worth visiting), and a car park is available at the rear of the hotel. We had a most enjoyable stay, and would certainly return when we are next in Carlisle.

What a lovely surprise. Old fashioned Edwardian city centre hotel chosen on price and location but an absolute delight. Importantly it was lovely and warm on one of the coldest night’s of the year Staff were all exceptionally friendly and cheerful

Me and hubby stayed here on Dec 23 , and we arrived around one o'clock no free car parking spaces. There is a car park behind marks and Spencers, which is a very short walk away £12 for 24 hrs. Our room was not in the hotel itself, but over the car park in separate annexe. lift was broken, we were on the first floor. The room was very dated but clean and comfortable. We got woke around 11pm has there was xmas party's, and the car park was were they came out to smoke. We enjoyed our stay and will stay again.

We enjoyed our late Christmas meal at the Crown and Mitre Hotel in the centre of Carlisle. We travelled with a group by train from Newcastle. We managed to get a very good deal of £5.50 return by train. The hotel has an elegant grandeur of a past time, many beautiful original features. The meal served in an upstairs room, overlooking the square, was beautifully decorated, each table looking very Christmassy, even though we were now into January. The food was exceptional, full turkey dinner with all the trimmings and the waiting team very attentive. Thoroughly enjoyed our day. Hoping to return for a longer visit in the future.

Nice central location but very tired and dated with miserable management only the waitresses that smiled. Waited 10 mins in bar for service and decided not to bother. Room smells of moth balls. Manager who opened gate for car park didn’t even smile or acknowledge us - not a great welcome. Shower badly broken. Bedroom old. Dining room has carpet taped up with silver tape. Very very disappointing as the prices are still steep when it’s not even travelodge standard. Needs a major overhaul of building and management.

The very best sort of old fashioned hotel where staff are attentive and genuinely helpful and the beds are really comfortable. This hotel is right in the pedestrianised and beautiful, historic town centre. Just around the corner from fabulous Carlisle Cathedral and fratry too. This may be the only time I ever sleep with a Christmas fayre and helter skelter right outside my window. No traffic noise and gated oarking behind the hotel. Such a lovely and welcoming place to stay.

This hotel is a gem in the city centre. Excellent value for money, and the breakfast is superb, in a lovely dining room. Thanks especially to Claire for great customer service with a smile! Food in the Mitre Bar is great, and our room (302) was cosy and spotlessly clean. Thoroughly recommend.
