Immediately previously we had stayed in a Welch hotel which during the shutdown had had a total refurbishment. We spent two nights in Bedroom 108, the contrast could not have been more different. Highlights were in the bedroom three low-power bedside lights, no other source of illumination after dark. The noise from Bedroom 109 seemingly throughout both nights. Car parking costs £10 per night. One bedroom-style chair for two people. The two windows provided two views of rooftops. Yet we slept fairly well. The breakfasts, taken in Brazz, were excellent, Gerry's muesli was particularly good. The kipper was perfect Regretfully a disappointing experience for the cost.

Our visit to The Castle Hotel was pleasant. Not what was expected as this was our first time in this establishment. We waited for our server to come and get us (very short wait). Staff were very friendly and approachable. Frazer, our waiter was superb. Couldn’t have asked for a more professional yet friendly person. Fab job Frazer. Food was lovely and although it is a set menu I would have preferred an alternative option for sandwiches as salmon is just not our choice of filling. I suppose it’s not to everyone’s taste. However, the other sandwiches, the scones and the brownies were amazing. A little pricey for an everyday lunch but so worth it for a well deserved catch up with family.

We booked a one-night stay as the hotel is in a great location for Somerset Cricket Ground. The location is good but there is a problem with the use of the square by skateboarders. The outside of the building certainly lives up to it's billing, inside there are some interesting features which fit the history but the experience was for us somewhat disappointing. We stayed in room 62, I have to say it certainly didn't look as good as any of the photographs on the website, there were no curtains, instead a rather dull roman blind, the room was well equipped but some of it, e.g the hairdryer was just a cheap travel model. The absence of air conditioning was noticeable given the warm night, there was a small fan which helped but didn't really give a cooling effect. The room was surface clean but would have benefited from a deep clean. The bathroom was of a decent size but the sink was cracked, a shower screen that was fixed making it difficult when turning on the shower, the shower control was very stiff, I have arthritic hands and couldn't manage it, my husband who doesn't have issues struggled with it. The staff were friendly and efficient at the reception. When we returned to the hotel around 10pm the cosy bar near the reception was closed, we now discover that it is only open on a Friday/Saturday night which is surprising since many guests may enjoy a night cap in a cosy atmosphere. We were told the bar in the Brazz restaurant was open, the staff seemed somewhat surprised when we walked in, they appeared to be cashing up for the night. They did serve us quickly but the there was no atmosphere and we felt uncomfortable and decided the take the wine to our room. Breakfast was good, the staff were efficient but the atmosphere was not welcoming - there was no engagement making a guest feel valued. Given the cost it was a disappointing experience which is shame.

I bought a voucher for an overnight stay for my husband who was born in Taunton 93 years ago! Covid prevented us from visiting until now but we thoroughly enjoyed our brief stay. We upgraded to the Brendon suite which was spacious, comfortable and had pleasant views of the delightful small garden. We were joined by family for a lovely afternoon tea. Breakfast was very good too. All the staff and especially Karen on Reception were pleasant and helpful. The hotel is clearly in need of expenditure and the shabby carpet on the stairs to the second floor really needs replacing. Sad too that the gracious dining room I remember having dinner in about 15 years ago is now only used for corporate or special occasions. We were also disappointed about disabled access as only entrance was via revolving door. My husband who uses a wheeled walker fell when trying to get in but thankfully not injured. Several steps to restaurant for breakfast, surely there are rules about disabled access.

My experience at The Castle Hotel started with the lovely Megan on reception last week on the phone. I have to book company nights away through a third party. Whilst other hotels haven't always found my booking, Megan did and explained why. She has saved me a lots of time calling other hotels to check my bookings when previously they haven't been able to find me! Than you Megan. My room is delightful and I had dinner in the restaurant which was presented very well and tasted delicious. I will be back! .
