All in all very happy with our stay here. Friendly staff. Nice garden. Good terrace with sunbed and fantastic view of the ocean. No beach onsite, but two nice beaches within 100 feet. Great Breakfast is served at your private balcony or at the beach terrace whatever you like. Reason for leaving out the last star is because the A/C didn't work in our room.

Nice and big rooms, but so many things are going wrong. TV there, but only 3 channels ! Spa bathtub impossible to use because the drain stopper is missing, claimed it 3 times, never appeared! Towels in very poor conditions, holes, fabric gone...
Lack of management, no one there to help.
There are so many nice places to stay in Mauritius, simply avoid this boutique hotel !

We very much enjoyed our stay at Ocean Beauty in Pereyberes. It is a small hotel (approx. 9 rooms). We stayed in the Clownfish suite on the first floor. The room was very spacious, had a fully equipped kitchen and big bathroom with a big tub, rainshower and music.
Breakfast is served in the room (on your own big balcony) or upon request by the pool/sea. You just call to order the (lovely) breakfast and around 10 minutes later, it will be served.
There were complementary beach towels and bathrobes in the room and a bottle of water was placed every day in the fridge. Free soft drinks were available at the reception.
Staff (reception and night guards) were very nice and helpful. They organized the rental car for us and would have helped organising other activities if we wanted.
The public beach and some restaurants are nearby (we would recommend the Thai restaurant just opposite the hotel or the Restaurant Le Benitier a bit further down the road).
Grand Baie is only a short taxi or bus ride away, it took us about 20 minutes walking (but there are no sideways, it wasn't a really nice walk).

Although our stay started ok, it quickly went fully down the drain mostly due to disastrous service and poor infrastructure
- The waiter at breakfast looked like we pissed him off every time we ordered something
- The reception is closed at night. We were supposed to leave early in the morning (8am) to go to the airport, we informed the staff the day before but no one showed up until 9.30am. No manager was in the hotel, only one security that put us in touch by phone with a receptionist. She told me on the phone that "today is not my shift so your problem is not my problem". She then hang-up without notice
- No wifi available in the room. Only slow wifi available at the reception and only during day time
- The beach is a joke. It's actually just a plot of land that appear only at low tide

We had booked and paid a one week vacation in Ocean Beauty two months before the date of our arrival. We had chosen to book Ocean Beauty because of the good reviews and beautiful pictures. We took a taxi from the airport and as we got to Pereybere driver gave a call to the hotel as he couldn't find the place. After the phone call, we were told by the driver that the hotel is overbooked and we shall be staying in a much older and more modest sister hotel Ocean Villas, until Ocean Beauty is ready to take us in. We were dissapointed and upset, both because we had to settle in a hotel that we had not chosen and because Ocean Beauty did not even bother to contact us directly, but we had to hear the bad news from the driver.

We were staying four nights in Ocean Villas and only three nights in Ocean Beauty. When we finally got to the hotel that we had booked, we insisted on some explanation and compensation, because especially after seeing Ocean Beauty we realised how much we had missed while we had to spend more than half of our holiday in this another hotel. However, even then we didn't get a proper answer from the staff. Someone from reservation department claimed that she will contact marketing director, but when after two days I went to ask if anything is happening, they still didn't have any comepensation or hardly even an apology to offer. Not an upgrade, not a free dinner, not even a bottle of wine! Finally, after three nights and on our last morning in Ocean Beauty, we were told that we could use a shower in another room after check-out before we head back to the airport. And that was our compensation for spending four nights in a wrong hotel, having to pack and unpack our things, having to travel from one hotel to the another during our short little vacation! Not to mention losing our option for free drinks and activities that were available on Ocean Beauty. To add insult to an injury, we did not even get the present that was promised for 7-night stay!

So, I would recommend the hotel for being a beautiful place. But if you want to get what you are paying for, if you want that promises are kept and if you want to be treated with respect, choose an another hotel! But maybe we just happend to be the unlucky ones, so after long consideration, I decided to give a thumb up. But that is only because of the place.

Mauritius is so far away from the USA that I'd not do it ever again, but it was interesting to see. It actually took me two over night flights and about 40 hours door-to-door. The hotel did have a guy with my name on it when we arrived to my surprise.

The hotel was very quaint and in a good location. The rooms were nice looking, with large bathrooms and small kitchens. They only had a 4 foot high mini-fridge that disappointed me. They served us a free made-to order breakfast that was really great. We made lunches and many dinners in the room.

The capital Port Louis is large for an island in the middle of nowhere, and worth walking around in. There was some shopping since they produce textiles there. The restaurants were good, and never got sick. Taxi drivers often only speak a local mix of French.

The tile floors were dirty from a lazy cleaning staff and my own high level requirement. Had them do special cleaning of my floors, and it was fine.

Take the tour to Coconut Island and snorkel the marine park. Take the south island tour through the mountains; great views.

My husband and I chose this place hoping to enjoy the intimate feeling of a small boutique hotel but were very disappointed. To be fair there were some positives but at the high season rate (at 2.5 times the normal rates) that we had to pay in advance in full there was this nasty feeling of being trapped.

The positives:
(1) Quiet and calm
(2) Large rooms
(3) Owner willing to change our room after 2 nights because of the moldy musty smell in the room.

The negatives
(1) We came into a hotel where we not welcomed except for the kind security guard who let us in.
(2) The room was stinky, and especially when the air-conditioning was turned on. Seemed like odors from the bathroom that smelt like a dumpster were coming in. The area neighboring the hotel is a large dumping ground. We were worried about contracting respiratory problems particularly when we noticed the date for the filter change on the air-conditioning was long over due. We decided to sleep without air conditioning and under our mosquito net that we brought. We had no one to complain to but the security guard who eventually managed to tell the owner who said we should just stay where we were for 2 nights as there was no other room available.
(3) The next day at breakfast, that sounds promising, I was horrified to find that upon examining the toasts, they were MOLDY. After bringing it to the attention of the receptionist we were told we would be compensated in some way but of course there was no follow-up.
(4) The receptionist Natalie is the most unpleasant person I have encountered in the hotel industry. For one, she never greeted us and even when to the extent of telling us that we should be in our rooms all day so we could move our own stuff and since we weren't they simply moved all our stuff out without letting us know. She was fully aware that I had asked in the morning to know when we should prepare to move and had not received an answer. I had to actually let her know that WE were on holiday and we should be able to follow our own schedules and not hers! I am so glad I will never have to see her again.
(5) Our move to the new room was much appreciated and it did not smell and was in fact bigger. Unfortunately, we found 2 cockroaches on 2 separated days in the bathroom. Rather disgusting! Decided to store our toothbrushes in the fridge.
(6) Came back one night after dinner and waited outside for over 15 min in the dark as there was no one coming to open the gate. Guests can not enter on their own but need to be allowed in by the guard. Upset, my partner jumped over the gate and let me in. We were horrified to see the security guard sleeping on one of the armchairs. He did not even move when we walked past him. One of the other guests tried to wake him up but he just went back to sleep on another chair! Fortunately nothing happened during our stay but I would warn others that if your safety is placed in the hands of a sleeping guard then just beware!
(7) Finally, upon preparing to leave we had absolutely no one mention anything especially at the reception. But what can one expect, we paid in full and clearly this hotel is not counting on us returning. Somehow goodwill is completely overlooked.

I would therefore warn anyone, who, like me did extensive research to find a nice place in Mauritius, to avoid this hotel. There is really not much of a beach in front of the hotel. The public beach was always overcrowded while we were there. There is no free access to water sports. Given the high room rates, I find this really disappointing. The area in front of the hotel is not very pleasant. There is however a really nice Thai restaurant Wang Thai that we frequented and were treated extremely well by the owner. I am relieved that we cut short our stay at Ocean Beauty and Ocean Villas when I realized that when we were suggested a room in Ocean Villas for the first part of our stay because Ocean Beauty was full, the staff were not even going to provide a free transfer to their sister hotel which is about 5 min away by car. It certainly made me think of the other comments that were posted about Ocean Villas and the management. Good thing was we had a terrific time at Casuarina Hotel as a result and perhaps we became spoilt by their hospitality.

Ocean Beauty is a small boutique hotel in the little village of Pereybere about 3 min drive from Grand Baie. The staff were excellent (particularly Prakash and the receptionist with glasses). We stayed in the Nautilus suite - one of the junior suites. It was simply stunning with direct view out over the pool onto the ocean (and the sunset). It even had a second small bedroom and jacuzzi bath. Some of the room finishes could have been better, but overall it's an incredible upmarket B&B.

Our 'Love at first sight' package included a beautiful 5-course sunset dinner and plenty of freebies: speedboat trip at sunset (we saw dolphins, totally unforgettable), snorkelling, speedboat transfer to grand baie, massages and large ring ride across the bay. They would cost a fortune separately and it was great just having reception confirm them all without having to haggle

Some tips:
-there isn't much nightlife life in Mauritius. Grand Baie next door has some bars and restaurants and Pereybere has some small restaurants but is very quiet on the whole. The Thai restaurant opposite is great and very cheap and Don Camillo and the chinese (in front almost of Ocean Villas - sister hotel), both in Grand Baie, are brilliant. Banana bar in grand baie is good and open late. avoid the argentine grill bar nearby
-Location: my girlfriend and I searched for hours on the web for the right hotel, price and location. Ocean Beauty is great for a base and near enough to some great beaches (though better are to be found in Asia). Stay in the north if you can as the weather is worse in many of the other parts of the island. Having seen even the 5-star hotels elsewhere on the island we wouldn't have wanted to stay anywhere else
-Places to visit: Ile aux Cerfs is incredible, Le Morne is stunning, La Cuvette (beach next to Royal Palm hotel on way out of Grand Baie is a hidden gem. The capital is not worth it
-try not to get stung by the Euro charged by the hotel room rate. For Brits, it hurts..
-buy a snorkel (and rubber shoes for the coral) set from hypermarket in Grand Baie so you don't get ripped off locally. We swam several times in the sea outside the hotel and ended up with a giant turtle. Twice.
-The weather was good for nearly two weeks solidly, then for 48 hours poured at the end. Literally. It took the shine off an otherwise beautiful holiday
-For all that it is, the dream of Mauritius maybe doesn't live up to the hype. We went to Thailand the year before and the people were incredible, beaches (but not the murky sea), food and weather better, not to mention incredible value-for-money

The first thing you should know before reading this review is that we are seriously fussy people :-)

After deciding to go a bit further afield for our hols, we finally settled on Mauritius. I then spent a good month resarching places to stay (mainly using this site - thanks guys!) and settled on the Ocean Beauty. We booked direct with the hotel, via web and email and it was all very easy and friendly (also booked the flights with Air Mauritius online, again very good!). We had a garden suite, near reception and the rooms were gorgeous...
beautifully furnished with a giant, comfortable bed.

From our veranda, we could sit and look out onto the lovely, well maintained gardens whilst listening to exotic birdsong and the gentle rippling of water from their koi pool. Sometimes Minah birds and the occasional gecko would pop by out of curiosity.

The pool was always quiet and very clean. The staff bring you snack and complimentary drinks now and then and if you have one of the meal packages there you are in for a real treat as the chef is absolutely stunning. He can do things with a Red Mullet which would make it glad it had been caught!

Anyway, I could go on for hours about how magical this hotel and indeed island is but I still would be unable to really so it justice. All in all I can't ever remember feeling as relaxed as I did here. The people are friendly, the climate is warm and the scenery stunning.

Go to Mauritius
Stay at the Ocean Beauty

You WON'T be disappointed!

(oh and if you have a few extra quid knocking about, fly business class - you won't regret it!)

We booked a garden suite at Ocean Beauty 6 months in advance then went travelling through Spain, Morocco and Africa for 5 months. On the flight to Mauritius we were nervous as to what to expect having done it all ourselves on the net but what a fantastic surprise. We arrived with no luggage - lost for 48hrs - to be welcomed with champagne, fruit platter and a great suite with a kitchen and a nice bathroom.
Having no toiletries with us the supplied molton brown products came in very handy. We walked the 3-5km into grand bae the next day to purchase swimmers, thongs and general supplies to then spend the next week relaxing by the pool, swimming in the small beach, scuba diving and reading.
Great Thai restaurant across the road and a fantastic italian one in grand bae. Handy supermarket for extra supplies across the road.
It was exactly what we had wanted after 5 months of backpacking.
The only complaint I would have was the rooms were not sound proof and the couple in the room next to us persisted in playing music on their laptop until 3am and we could hear all their activities.
The bathplug was unable to be removed to empty the bath after one night so we did not use it again and the toilet did not flush one morning - but both these issues were fixed ASAP.
Not all the reception staff were pleasant and when there was a mix up for our dinner the night before we were not given an apology and made to feel it was our fault.
This did not ruin our stay and we left a week later well and truely relaxed and keen to return one day.
