Arriving in Bergen for a five night stay, we were disappointed to find that the Gjesthus was on one of the few streets in the city that didn't feel especially safe, near a small hotel that seemed to function as a hostel for down-and-outs and a football bar that was very loud, all night. We'd been allocated a tiny, sparsely furnished room with a grubby bathroom, and as we were paying a lot (even by Norwegian standards) we considered relocating to a different hotel. We were then offered a bigger room on the third floor which was much more comfortable and airy, with a nice new bathroom. The lesson is ask to see the room before you pay (the Gjestus insists on full payment on arrival). There was also a power cut one morning which meant using the bathroom and breakfast room in darkness - and no coffee! On the plus side, the hotel offers free internet access, an OK breakfast, and the manager was courteous and helpful in dealing with our complaints. When we made the eventual decision to skip one night in Bergen and head to Balestrand, he kindly allowed us to leave our luggage in the hotel overnight, with no problems. Good service but perhaps not ideal for more than one or two nights.

The hotel has two buildings, one of which is newly renovated and the other one has the hotel reception and breakfast room. I stayed in the newly renovated building which is accross the square a little down towards the center.

I have to say the staff was very friendly and the rooms were clean and just newly furnished. However, if you are going to stay in this hotel ask your room not to be on the front side of this new building. There is a bar below the building (called Sport Bar), which is extremely noisy and goes on till late hours. The drunk people are yelling on the streets and you hear everything at your room as the isolation is not so good. I couldn't sleep at all, despite my earplugs.

Another thing to pay attention is the parking in front of the hotel. They let you park your car but please ask for the special hotel ticket to be located in your front window, otherwise you get a fine(of about 700 NK, meaning about 100 Euros!). The hotel staff did not provide us with the ticket and we didn't know about it. And there you go. They helped us to sort it out later but still, it was disappointing.

Stayed here beginning April 07, nice room, clean, spacious bathroom. Hotel is in a great location, very central and good price. Staff were very friendly and nice lady on reception allowed me to have my breakfast at 11.15 even though it finished at 11. Bar downstairs is really good as it is frequented by local musicians. They will constantly ask what instrument do you play - very friendly people in Bergen. Pizza in bar at 10pm also goes well will the strong local beer. Happy days.

Perfect location and very very helpful staff. Our family room was absolutely massive and had windows to the front which the kids loved.
I think what made the hotel stand out was the staff. I probably was one of their difficult guests but got every whim catered for. I asked for a traavel adaptor, internet access, timetables, boiled water etc and got everything without a problem.
They had a very nicely decorated breakfast room and the breakfast as in most norweigien hotels was excellent.
I had a slight misommunication problem over the room fare but the extremely polite manageress resolved that.
We loved the location as it was near all the happening places but slightly away from it all. there was a Rimi superparket just outside which was very convenient. We walked from the train station and took us hardly 10 minutes. Will stay again!!

I stayed with a group of 6 friends in Bergen for 2 nights. The location of the hotel is perfect for us budget-conscious travellers - in the centre of town, but out of the immediate tourist area. Right on the main "strip" of town, the Bergen Travel Hotel is great as a base to wander around Bergen and walk from train station and ferry terminals. Our triple rooms were HUGE! Don't be fooled by the slightly dingy corridors, the rooms are airy, spacious and very well furnished with couches and tables. We were worried about the noise from the bar downstairs, but never had any problems in the end. Reception staff were extremely helpful and hospitable. Breakfast was basic, but the hotel still was great value for money. Would stay again.

I read the reviews after booking and I was REALLY nervous to arrive. I was already looking up some other places. Silly me. We traveled through Norway for two weeks and this has been my favorite hotel. The rooms must've been recently renovated - they're well outfitted and modern! The bed was incredibly comfortable, again, better than the others I had slept on. The bathroom was clean. It's a little small, true, but jeez, this is in the middle of a European city!

To address concerns about the noise, my future-in-laws stayed at the front of the hotel and they didn't have problems with the pub. We stayed at the back and the noise was also not a problem. If you're really noise sensitive, the center of town probably isn't the best place for you - you'll always be surrounded by cars, people, and restaurants. Also, bring earplugs!

A few other points: The breakfast was great! Hot and cold food and a good selection. The location of the hotel was also amazing, just 10 minutes from the fish market, maybe 12 from the furnicular, and near tons of amazing restaurants.

My summary: I would stay here again and I recommend that you do too!

We stayed at the Bergen Travel Hotel for three nights. Our room was very spacious and nice. The hotel is conveniently located within walking distance of at least three-fourths of the things people would want to see in Bergen. The breakfast was average. The bar and outdoor patio were great as was their homeade pizza. The only downside to staying at the hotel was that the city was having above average temperatures and the rooms are not air conditioned nor have fans. The lack of any cooling element was bad enough, but our room was also right above the outdoor patio. Accordingly, it was virtually impossible to sleep until the bar hustled people inside around 1:00 a.m. Even then it was a little difficult to sleep because during the summer we found that people like to stay out pretty late and enjoy the weather...so we heard drunk people cruising the streets all night. We thought about asking for a room change but I don't think it would have mattered. The rooms on the other side of the hotel faced another bar that was louder than the one in the hotel. So, all said, the hotel is nice but if the weather is as well, be prepared to be up all night.

This hotel is in a good location, near the centre of Bergen, they have some allocated parking outside the hotel but only about 6 spaces. We stayed in a building down the street from the main hotel which was above a pizza restaurant. The room was small but clean and had tea/coffee making facilities. The bathroom was also clean but very small. Breakfast was served in the pub area of the main hotel and was very good, nice fresh bread. The hotel itself was quiet but we suffered from some neighbour having a party with loud music until 2am. Staff were friendly and very helpful and the room rate was quite good, we booked through fjordpass which is supposed to give you a discount but not sure it made any difference.

I was met by the receptionist with an arrogant and negative attitude. I had to stay in an complex outside the mail hotel. Old rooms, pure Internet, no washing soap, and no real breakfast. My room was located on top of a Pub (with noise long after midt night).

we were warmly welcomed. We had a big room, bigger than many of the others. The beds were good and we had a nice sleep. There was some noise from the street, but it did not disturb at all. Close to the airport bus. I forgot a book which they sent me the same day.
