Detailed Reviews
prices: Bergen is just nuts apparently, so this is the cheapest i found by a long long shot
amenities: this place had more amenities than any other hostel i stayed at: laundry room, plenty of shower and bathroom stalls, luggage room, breakfast included, communal kitchen with public pots and pans and everything you need to cook yourself dinner. towel rental was priced fairly, and renting a lock for the lockers was free (just a deposit, if i recall).
squeaky beds: i can forgive squeaky beds, but when there are 20 people in a room or whatever, there's always going to be someone coming or going or tossing and turning, which makes the squeak a bit of a problem.

The platonic ideal of hostelling, encapsulated in a friendly, spacious, welcoming and clean reality.
The volunteer organised activities were very special and made it easy to meet and chat to other guests in a relaxed way. We would never have found the fjord-viewing sauna on our own - although these are only advertised ~12 hours in advance making it tricky to plan ahead.
There was a plentiful and good quality communal breakfast every day included in the price. The guest kitchen and restaurant also provided appealing evening meal options with the Bunnpris supermarket around the corner open until 9 most days (closed on Sundays).
The view from the hostel itself is exceptional and the location provides easy access to trails linking to the seven peaks of Bergen. The Floyen - Ulriken hike was well worth the effort.
Rooms and communal spaces were all very clean and cleaned daily!

We stayed at the Montana hostel for three nights in a double room. One night before heading out on a twelve day rental car roadtrip around the nationalparks and then coming back for two nights at the end of our trip. Though a bit far from the city center, the hostel has a great location with views overlooking Bergen. Its only a minutes walk from the trail start to the Ulriken hike. Bus connections and grocery shopping is right next door. It has all the facilities you could ask for in a hostel, rooms are clean and breakfast is one of the best ive seen in a hostel. The frontdesk staff are super friendly, very helpfull and makes you feel welcome. The hostel manager even arranged for secure and private parking for my motorcycle for the twelve days we were out exploring. I would recommend this place for anyone visiting Bergen.

I wish I slept at a public bus stop before stepping foot into this place. Now, I must admit that it looked fairly clean like every other hostel I have been in. However, be warned. I paid a bit extra for a female dorm because that is what I am comfortable with as someone who travels alone occasionally. I got my room key, verified that it was an all female dorm room, only to step one foot into the dorm with an old man berating me. Now, this man did not physically hurt me, but I have met rodents with more decorum than this man. This was definitely not what I wanted after just getting off a 7 hour train ride. I went back to the receptionist, who said that she did give me a female dorm. She then checked the books and saw where someone else had changed it to a mixed dorm for the night. I don’t know who in their right mind would not warn the receptionist that this booking as been changed, as I feel like that is very important, but whatever. The receptionist was very kind, as she could see I was physically upset, but did not offer much help. Safe to say I could not sleep here, as I did not feel safe AT ALL, and left after daybreak came. On a side note, traveling around a new city while being extremely sleep deprived is not fun.

This hostel is so well maintained, in facilities and also in community. They have staff people at the front desk 24/7, have simple but very clean and comfortable rooms, and have such a great community environment. They have free cookies and coffee everyday at 5:30 and lots of spaces to hang out and connect. The kitchen is very organized, and the breakfast is amazing!
The location on the outskirts of the city is both a pro and con. It's very quiet and has stunning views of the city, but it does take 25 minutes by bus from the city center. Because of that, I would recommend staying here only if you have time for 2+ nights.

+1
I had a great experience as a solo female traveler.
The reception is 24/7 for the summer season and was very kind and helpful. I recommend renting the padlock as soon as you check in (100 nok, refundable). I stayed in a 4 bed female dorm with a bathroom. Everything was nice and tidy, the mattress was comfortable and I was able to get a good night’s sleep.
The common areas are large and spacious and though this is very busy hostel, you don’t feel jammed and crowded. There is a patio overlooking the city.
The breakfast is simple, but fresh. Very good coffee!
The location is a bit far from the city centre, which is perfect if you plan on hiking and exploring the nature more than the city itself. Number 12 bus will be your friend and the bus stop is a 3 minute walk from the hostel. There is a nicely stocked grocery store right next to the hostel so you can get everything you need. Bring some teabags with you!
Overall, highly recommend for those looking for a hostel experience. If I’m ever in Bergen again, I’m sure I’ll be back.

This hostel was excellent! Really smooth check in and free parking for those with cars. The rooms are kept very clean. I really enjoyed the location of the hostel, which overlooked the fjords as well as the daily events that the volunteers put on. As a solo traveller it was nice to chat with people during the daily coffee and cookies and during the board games night. The breakfast was also amazing, and I recommend trying the local Sogn brown cheese! The cost is wonderfully affordable for Bergen, and definitely worth it. One of the best hostels I've been to all around.

This was my first time staying in a hostel so I can't tell you if the price was worth it but I will say, the amenities aren't entirely as advertised. The gym only had like 3 pieces of equipment and half were broken. The storage room is a dusty unfinished basement closet. The TV didn't have cable. The wifi is iffy The kitchen (cooking area) is very tight and was almost always crowed. There was no space in the fridges and (one!) freezer. The oven trays were too small for one oven and the second one didn't work for some reason. Keep in mind that the free breakfast is Norwegian style so expect a light breakfast of deli meats and cheeses, spreads, oats and yogurts. It wasn't very noisy in my experience (there are quiet hours) but I didn't sleep too well in the bed, the room got stuffy quick and I had people moving in at midnight so...
Some good things: Activities planned every day (not always free though), plenty of board games, cards, table tennis, musical instruments and multiple seating areas to hang out inside and outside. The bus ride to and from the city is very easy. A near by grocery store and kebab place. Free coffee every night. The rooms and bathrooms are cleaned daily and not only was there a private bathroom/shower but there were more out in the hall and gym. Check in and out was very easy! If you're into hiking, this is the perfect place.
Overall, if your goal is to just have some place to sleep for a few nights, it's perfect! If you're staying for a longer trip it might get frustrating with the amount of people staying there. I stayed for three nights and didn't dare use the kitchen because of that. Otherwise, it was great for my first hostel experience.

We stayed as a couple in a private room. The hostel has an institutional feel to it, but it is clean and well-run, and our room was very quiet. We enjoyed some of the activities on offer (hiking with other guests and volunteers) and the dinner you can order from the front desk for purchase is quite delicious (I had the lasagne with greek salad). However, the free breakfast is not very good, especially for people who try to eat healthy meals. Too much white bread, and even the brown bread was more like Wonder bread. No multigrain or other healthier bread. And there was very little fresh fruit, as well as no hot dishes. Aside from the breakfast, though, we loved our stay!
The hostel isn't close to the center of town, but there's a bus stop with a direct bus route that is easy to take. There's also a supermarket across the street. One of the front desk staff was amazing: I don't know her name but she had long dark hair and greeted a long line of tired people checking in with the same friendly smile and greetings. She should get a medal!

I loved my stay here. It's a really special place. I stayed for 2 nights in a 4 bed female dorm. The hostel is up on the side of a hill in a quiet residential area overlooking the city. It's really easy to find, with the bus stop and bus direction being the name of the hostel (Montana), and signs pointing you there from the bus stop. The staff were friendly, and it felt like a true international community. The hostel has lovely communal and outdoor spaces, with picnic benches overlooking the amazing view of the city. It's also opposite a supermarket and the start of a popular hiking route. It was everything I wanted from a solo hostel stay.
