Detailed Reviews
As my husband has stated this hotel is getting very mixed reviews.
The hotel's location is good for access to all parts of Bergen by foot and it only takes about 15 minutes (slow walker) to reach all parts off the main city. The Hotel is basic but for a crash pad it's more than adequate. The rooms are comfortable, and have TVs, a minifridge, a kettle (but no milk, or tea bags/coffee so bring your own), heated floor in the bathroom which is a wet room, bedside cabinets and lamps. The beds are a little soft but comfortable esp for a one or two night stay (i have bad back so 8 days was a little much)
The only thing some people might not like is that cleaning only happens every 4 days, the staff never go into your other than that though. you can pay extra for everyday cleaning but we did not think it necessary and managed perfectly well with the 4 day routine.
The hotel is also very near a host of bakeries and bars all within easy walking distance and provided excellent breakfast, snacks etc.
The only shame about this hotel is its neighbours; two bars right next door. The front of the Hotel is only one doorway wide, and underneath the remainder of the hotel are two bars. These bars open about 6pm and stay open (apart from Sunday) until 2am-3am every day. they both compete for the loudest music and there are continually people milling around outside, smoking, shouting to each other across the road, coming and going. Having spent the first night being disturbed by this(we had a room 4 floors directly above the bars) and getting no sleep we spoke to the receptionist who apologised profusely and offered us another room on the 5th floor on the other side of the hotel. however, I think this is only because we were visiting off season and there were plenty of spare rooms; in the summer this would not be the case and any chance of moving rooms would be minimal i think. so, Any rooms with odd numbers mean you will be on the bar side of the hotel, even numbered rooms are on the back side. the higher up you go the better BUT you can still hear the thud of the base in the music. if you value your sleep or a are a really light sleeper, i would advise; go somewhere else.
as we understand it, the bars were not there when the hotel opened but have since had permission for their bars. whilst the hotel owners are in discussion with them, they are running a business which demands loud music whilst the hotel is a place for people to sleep; the hotel comes off worse at the moment as there is no agreement as to what is "reasonable volume".
this is a great hotel, and i cannot understand how the council allowed two bars to open right underneath it. however, if you are young and out til all hours then this is a great hotel for you.
I would have given the hotel a higher rating if it were not for the noise issue from the adjacent bars.

Situated close to the city center. Easy to find everything around. Restaurants, malls, shops, supermarket, convenience store, and several kebab shops. We did not spend any money on city transport as the city center that we explored were easily walkable from the hotel.
We arrived early in the morning and got an SMS notification about our booking that we could check in earlier. It really helped as we need a place to rest after our overnight journey by train. The receptionist is friendly and efficient that we can have an early check in.
The hotel is not big, but stylish inside. It has a good size of lift and good security features right from the front door. We need the our room key card to open the front door, the door to the corridor of the rooms and finally to the bed room.
We have got a good deal for booking a double room with private bathroom. It was the cheapest rate we could find in our search. I think our type of room is the smallest type of double room. The room is stylish, new-looking, and very clean. The bed room we had was small about 2.5x2.5 m2, excluding a spacious bathroom. With a queen size bed, the remaining space was quite small. It will be even more difficult to move around if you have large luggage. What else are provided in the room? A working table and chair, TV with few channels, small fridge, heater, mirror, a short horizontal pole to hang the cloths with hangers (instead of cupboard), kettle and cups. The linen and the towels were clean. The soap and toilet tissue were provided.
We stayed there for 1 night. We have a pleasant stay there. I would recommend this hotel for those who would look for basic accommodation within budget.

If you need a quite hotel that's the right hotel for you. The room was quite small, but very clean at the same time. During my 5 day stay noone cleaned it or something, but I knew that in advance. Bathroom was very clean. The room quite small but efficient. Internet was very fast both In and Out. The place felt safe (btw. when you leave the room I believe like in so many hotels you have to swipe the card to actually lock it, just double check when you leave your room). The hotel, to my information, does not offer breakfast in the general sense, but I was okay with that. Although the hotel is I believe about 6 stories high I only met other guests once. Hotel has a nice touch in terms of decoration (I believe it was a love theme). Very positive. If you arrive at a time when reception isnt manned then you get a key code by email beforehand. Location is very central. Don't remember seeing any coffee/tea facilities. But price was alright. 100 meters down the street there is that Rimi 1000 shop where you can grab some food to eat. I think the Rimi is open until about 11pm or so. Airport Bus is just about 400 meter walk The stop is Byparken. Good hotel with that weird theme which makes me want to stay there again :) Good value for money given the prices in Norway.

The worst hotel ever! Me and my family stayed two nights. When we arrived the room was so dirty. Dust and long hair all over from previous guests. The pictures on the website is misleading. It is also a lot of noise from the street and between rooms. The bed is not comfy at all! Room 510 smells sewage and only has a rooftop window. Had a stroller with us, but the elevator only went up to 4th floor, so we had to carry the baby and stroller up the last floor. Don’t recommend this hotel! Unless you’re having problems finding the way home after a visit at the nightclub (witch is located at the first floor and in the basement of the hotel) and need a short stroll/crawl home.

Small rooms with windows that cant be opened. The hotel is right by a nightclub that you can hear. We were four guys that wanted two twin rooms but after we payed and came to the rooms saw that the beds were double beds and not two single beds. The receptionist wouldnt canel the rooms. After a quick check the scandic hotel up the street had bigger rooms with a veiw, included breakfast and great service. The scandic was even cheaper!!!
The Basic hotel is basic and certainty not worth the price!

If you value your sleep don't stay at the Basic Hotel, Bergen. I'm actually writing this review at 2 o'clock in the morning, having lost 2 hours sleep from the seismic thud of the bass from the nightclub right next door. Bear in mind that we are on the fourth floor and have two sets of double glazing in the windows and that will give you some idea of the noise level.
On the first night here, on a Saturday, I thought it was the noise from the festival that night but it turns out that this is business as usual for the night club. The club is shut on Sundays and Mondays so we got a decent sleep on those nights but on Tuesdays it kicks into gear again and each club night goes on until 2.45am.
The other problem here is that because it's a basic hotel, there's no on site duty manager in the early hours of the morning. I'm sure that if there was one, this situation wouldn't have been allowed to persist. As it was I had to call the emergency number, which wasn't answered immediately, and leave a message. Eventually the off site contact called me back and said that they would send someone down to talk to the nightclub manager. Apparently that has now happened but there hasn't been any discernible improvement, largely because heavy night club bass has a tendency to travel through walls. God only knows what the guests on The first floor are going through.
So, having called the emergency number again, I've now been encouraged by the guy on the phone to complain to the hotel manager in the morning, which I certainly will do. In my opinion this hotel can't actually provide its most basic function - allowing its guests a decent night's sleep - unless the nightclub changes the way it's run, or closes down. I would urge anyone thinking of staying here to steer well clear until this fundamental problem is resolved.
It's a shame, as the rooms are nice, well furnished and well equipped, and the staff friendly (when they're here!). But, as I say, it's up to the management of the hotel to find a proper solution to the most basic problem. Putting two sets of earplugs in each room just ain't going to cut it, I'm afraid!
This is the most damming review I've ever posted on Trip Advisor. I trust that the management will treat it with the seriousness and urgency it deserves.

Response from kennethbasic2, Manager at Basic Hotel Bergen
Responded 24 Sept 2015
First of all, accept our sincere appologiez for the disturbance you had during your visit,The reception is open from 0900 until 2300, after 2300 our nigthwatch have rounds and are reachable, information about this is both in the reception area and at the info channel in the tv in room. Since there is two bars that are located in the same building as Basic Hotel Bergen they where taken into concideration that we are running a hotel in the same building., as you say – a place where people come to sleep. and we are trying to have dialog with them concerning music level / noise from the street etc. For us this is not acceptable , and , actually we where buying earplugs for our guests, as it seemed that the noise still is disturbing. Of course this is not a good situation for us and our guests. Our nightwatch reported that it was better , but still noisy. For us this is a really big problem, We do not want to give our guest wrong information. We will when we launch our website describe that the hotel is located in the middle of the city centre and also that there are two bars in the same building. We are now addressing this and our aim is that these places are not to be disturbance for our guests. Hotel Manager did not get any email from you regarding this so please forward an email to hotel manager. Best regards Kenneth Klementsen Hotel Manager Basic Hotel Bergen

I'm literally sitting awake at 1:16am on a Tuesday morning at Basic Hotel Bergen because I cannot sleep due to the loud music from the downstairs night club. I'm on a second floor room. The earplugs the hotel provides do not help at all because it's bass music being blasted.
When checking in, ask for a room on the third floor and away from the night club as it might help.
The condition of the hotel itself is nice. The decor is modern and new looking. The bathroom is very clean. It is a very small, very basic setup.
No breakfast but there is a small frig in the room so I recommend buying breakfast items from the supermarket the night before if you want to save money.
Overall, for the money I paid, I would not come back due to the loud music. However, if you are a heavy sleeper, then maybe it will be ok.

While the price is good at this hotel, if you want a good nights sleep it is best avoided, particularly on Friday night which was when we stayed. The first hint is when you get to your room and find that earplugs are provided. There are nightclubs downstairs in what is essentially the same building, as well as elsewhere along the same street, and when they are operating you really cannot block the noise out, both from the amplified music and the drunken patrons in the street. Our room was on the 5th floor and facing away from the street, so the furthest away from the problem, but it was still a miserable night until after 3am.
The room itself was small but clean, and had quite a roomy bathroom. The bed was comfortable even though we (sisters) had to share a double bed. The windows could be opened for fresh air, though quickly closed again when the noise started.
A room on the 5th floor is probably best for one person only. The rooms are under the pitched roof, so the small floor area is made seem even worse by the low roof line on one side and it's very hard not to to bang your head quite a lot, particularly when two people with luggage are trying to manoeuvre in the small area. Also, try to get a room away from the 5th floor if you have heavy luggage or a problem with stairs - the lift only goes to the 4th floor and you have to drag your luggage from there.
Lastly, be aware that this hotel does not have rooms with twin beds, which is not made clear on some booking sites. Whilst most hotels in Scandinavia have beds which can be split into two singles, this one does not, and the attitude of the manager/owner is "nothing to do with me, talk to the booking agency". This is all very well but it would not hurt him to take steps with the booking agencies to prevent confusion for potential guests. He was very rude and did not do the image of his hotel proud, though as a counterpoint the receptionist was lovely and helpful.
The price at this hotel is good, but if you want to rest on those nights when the nightclubs are in full swing, pay a little more to go to a quieter location.

This was a nice hotel in a good location (near to restaurants and bars) and we got a free upgrade to a bigger room because it was available when we stayed. The room was nice, and clean and the bed comfortable. However, as other people have said it was extremely noisy due to the club and bars on the street, so you can hear loud music and people shouting until about 4am. Ear plugs were provided, but I would rather stay somewhere where you don't need ear plugs to sleep! This place is probably fine to stay in if you are also planning to be out late.

It was a pleasure to check-in to this Hotel...The staff were very welcoming and helpful and the room was lovely with all the modern luxuries, WiFi, TV channels, etc.....But...The disco started at 11pm we were on the third floor and on looking a the hotel layout the hotel is actually above the disco, we had seen the previous reviews about the noise from the disco but we thought mid week in March this wouldn't be really be a problem....how wrong we were, it wasn't just the music but the beat.. you could feel it going through the building ! We had some ear plugs which deadened the music but you could still feel it, it finally finished at 3am as we were up at 6am it was a short night.
I'm surprised the the authorities allow this to go on if it was in the UK they would have been given of closure... how many complains do they need to close this disco or just ask them to turn the music down to a reasonable level !!
