Detailed Reviews
We attended a wedding on the adjacent farm on Easter weekend, 2021. The guest rooms are in an old farm house, which I enjoyed. The house has an enormous garden and a pool. It is located close to the N1 but far enough to maintain peace. The gravel road is not bad and can be traversed with a low car.
I enjoyed strolling along the small roads and absorbing the calmness and beauty of the Karoo.
The people on the farm were extremely lax with security, which unsettled me somewhat, given the safety issues on farms in the country. There is no meaningful fence around the house or farm, only a small one to keep sheep from wandering off. The owners assured me that they’ve never had any incidents.
NB. Be specific when booking: You don’t want to stay in one of the out houses, rather in the main house.

If you are looking for a chance to have a peaceful break in a typical Karoo farm then Mieliefontein is ideal for you. The original farmhouse has been adapted to fit the rooms in but the overall feel is very typical of the Karoo. It is really in the middle of nowhere and is still a working farm so sheep abound everywhere. The fram house are itself come sacross as a small oasis in the semi-desert of the Karoo. Wonderful gardens are complimented by a very nice pool area.
The owners are the original farmners although their children now run the farm. Stories are endless and they are very hospitable. The food is cooked by the lady of the farm and her staff and it is truly wondeful. if you hanker after old style South African cooking where everything including the jam is home made then this is a great place to go. Ask for some vet koek!
A little off the beaten track (8km down a dirt road off the N1) and no air conditioning but otherwise a truly pleasant experince.

We stayed a night at Mieliefontein both on our way to and from Cape Town these December / January holidays. The farm is a tradition Karoo working sheep farm with a huge, truly magnificent oasis of a garden. The garden is over 50 years old and obviously a labour of love. There is a lovely swimming pool that our children enjoyed. The rooms and bathrooms are not modern decor wise but were all large and spotlessly clean. Meals are traditional Karoo farm fare, lots of delicious options and eaten in a formal dining room. The only recommendation I would make if considering a stay at Mieliefontein is not to stay at the separate self catering “cottage” but make sure you stay in one of the garden facing rooms in the main house.
We stayed in the separate self catering “cottage” on our first stay here and it was not very pleasant. On a separate property from the main house there is nothing but gravel and dirt around it, and lots of devil thorns that had obviously been walked into the house and that our children kept standing in. The house is in need of painting, the bath ran muddy water and the bathroom light didn’t work.

+1
Having booked for 1 night's accommodation and paid in September, my family were greatly disappointed with the service and "room" we received when arriving there from a long hard trip from Cape Town on the night of 2nd January at about 7.30pm. Instead of a lovely comfortable room with a queen size bed and two single beds - overlooking the lush green lawn, beautiful garden with stunning view as advertised, we were ushered into a concrete and gravel back yard and into a unit where we were convinced - granny lived. There were no comforts whatsoever. Only an old TV with snowflake channels, no DSTV or WIFI, no ice blocks in the freezer only frozen meat. The beds were not comfortable at all to say the least. There was however ceiling fans to cool the hot Karoo air. We are of the opinion that they overbooked and being the last guests to arrive, were given the poor option.
We had such a disappointing night, hardly slept and left before sunrise.
We will regrettably not recommend Mieliefontein Guest Farm at all.

Security was a major concern. The house is situated right on the railway line and after enjoying a walk around the gardens, upon our return we stumbled across a group of men who wandering around our cars and the house. Once they saw us they ran off. This incident left us feeling very insecure especially as the is no border fence

We were put in the flat next to the main house overlooking the kitchen back door and chicken pen. The welcome was bordering on being offensive and we were refuse access to the dinner area and made to fetch our plates through the kitchen back door even though we specifically mentioned that we will be traveling with our 4 legged daughter. We were looking for a Karoo farm night but did not find it.

Clean, friendly and beautiful accommodation. Food was great. Could not believe there was such a beautiful place out in the middle of nowhere! No more Colesberg sleepovers for me.

We were a familie of 2 Adults 2 children. We were placed in the house next to the one advertised. There is no tv. No fans or aircon. Old run down farm house. We did not open during the night any windows did not feel safe. For R2200 a night rather search for alternative accommodation in Beauford wes. After a long day on the road one need proper place to stay.

Most helpful and friendly staff. Booked for family during busy long weekend in December 2024 and got dates mixed up, had to cancel and feedback/help/ assistance from owners and on-site personnel was excellent right through.
Will return soon.

An oasis in the middle of the Karoo. Lovely hosts and beautiful homemade farm dinner. Great accommodation with super comfy bed and a view over the spectacular garden. Thanks for having us, we will definitely stay here again.
