The Karoo Gariep conservancy (10,000 ha) for the Karoo Hippo is between Colesberg and Hanover. We are 8 km of the N1 highway and perfectly between Cape Town and Johannesburg, also halfway between Upington (Kalahari) and PE (Garden Route); this make us the perfect halfway break in South Africa. We pay special attention to nature and the outdoors. You can explore the central Karoo using us as a basis, we have the Sea Caw Vally Meander which connects New Bethesda to Hanover and Colesberg by dirt road. These roads can be enjoyed by car as well as on mountain bike. Tourist friendly establishments are listed and work together in a communal afford. Our activities include early morning birding drives, horse riding, stargazing from our star deck, hippo drives, Koi etchings, mountain bike trails and more. There are three lodges on the conservancy to choose from. Mieliefontein, with Ian and Elma, New Holme with P.C. and Marisca are our self catering lodge Wolmado (managed by Elma) New Holme and Mieliefontein are 4 star and a pleasure to stay in. We offer good "Plaas kos" 3 course dinners. The meals are an experience and are recommended. We promote a 2 to 3 night stay to get a more complete experience of our beautiful Karoo.

The log cabin was perfect for a large family with kids. Both rooms have en-suite bathrooms, the main bedroom with a large shower and secondary bedroom with a bath. The living room and kitchen is perfectly set up for self catering, however, the farm dinners and breakfasts are not to be missed!

Have you ever slept in a horse stable? We slept in a converted horse stable at New Holme Karoo Guest Farm. The large room (with a king size bed) was luxuriously decorated with all amenities and had an en-suite bathroom with a bath and beautiful shower. The room had huge sliding doors, where one could go out and sit on the patio, looking out on the pastures and sunset. We had a shy 5 night drive and a morning birding drive where a very knowledgeable PC went to a lot of trouble to show us the Burchell's courser. The breakfast and main meals were excellently prepared and presented. There was a good variety of foods and a special wine cellar. You can self-drive if you like and visit the river and dam on the farm. This was definitely not our last visit!

PC and his team run a really relaxed venue with hearty food, very comfortable rooms, and range of drives and excursions that will suit anyone who loves nature. The birdlife is astonishing, and PC's bird and animal knowledge is exceptional. Be sure to do all the drives and excursions from rock art to the post-dinner Shy 5 drives.

The location is great, the owners very helpful BUT NO ONE WAS WEARING MASKS or observing basic COVID safety protocols! (Including owners and staff) The water was disconnected for a few hours. The food was average. The room ok. Very minimal amenities available in the rooms

A lovely oasis for an overnight stop between the Cape and Joburg. A family run farm stay, with very friendly service, and sweet little baby animals dotted all over the place - piglets, lambs, calves and a curious little Meerkat.
The highlight was the Karoo dinner feast - hot home baked bread, bobotie, lamb, veggies, salads, dessert.... It was all too delicious

We were driving from Cape Town to Pretoria and needed a place to sleep over and happened to end up at the New Holme Karoo Guest Farm after nightfall. It was one of the very few places we contacted that were serving dinner and breakfast. Both of these were tasty and typically Karoo fare, with the meat straight from the farm itself. Dinner especially would be difficult to beat anywhere else. The lounge is warmed in winter by a large fireplace, which was lit when we were there as it was chilly outside. The rooms are clean and built in what were old stables. (Not that you would realise it if you weren't told.) Ours was a bit on the cold side at first, but was equipped with a heater, and an air conditioner. The bed was just what a weary traveller needed, large and with a warm, soft, down duvet. In the morning we walked around the yard and were greeted with all kinds of farm animals. All the staff, including the owners, are warm and friendly people. This is a gem halfway on the route between the Cape and Gauteng, which we are glad we found, and we will certainly stay here again.

New Holme is a lovely old homestead in the Karoo but for an overnight stay on the long drive to Cape from KZN it was not ideal. The road was very muddy after recent rains & the 8km from the N1 took ages to drive. We thought we would be in our own family cottage but in fact we were in rooms in the big house with our bathroom over a common passage which was not very private. The people in the other rooms were quite noisy when we were trying to fall asleep. We felt it was overpriced for our family for what we received as it was more than double what we usually spend on overnight accommodation on the way to CT. It looked like it was a lovely friendly place to stay but not recommended as an overnight place.

Friendly reception on arrival. The tranquility provides a perfect atmosphere in which to relax after a long drive. The staff on duty were attentive to all our needs with the dinner providing a perfect ending to the day. We definitely will recommend New Home to family and friends. Very interesting project of reintroducing Hippos into the Seekoei Rivier (Hippo Rivier).

What a friendly, 'making you feel at home' place. PC went out of his way to assist us even on his 'off' day to ensure we have meat and salads prepared and even braaid for us. What a surprise when he asked us if we wanted to go with them out to the veld and see how they feed the buffalos, even went to see a Hippo in the water.

It is always a pleasure to spend a night or two at New Holme Lodge. PC is a warm and friendly host. His various bird and game drives are a must when visiting. Marisca, PC's wife excels in the kitchen with amazing taste sensations attractively presented. Whenever we are in the Hanover area en route home to Joburg we always try to spend time at New Holme
