I loved going to sleep with the sound of the ocean and looking at the waves crushing on the beach, all while lying on my bed. Only seen one monkey at our place the ti.e we were there.
Daily cleaning made it so much better.
Sharon and John was so friendly and welcomy. Having a bit of a knee problem, the lift made things much better.
The breakfasts Sharon served was excellent. I will definitely go there again and quite soon.
I would have loved if maybe the cheese platter in the morning cudda been served in the afternoon, if you there you welcome to have some, if not you miss out, or like a small sandwich platter. But this is just a thing I thought off. It made nothing for not having it. Everything was super. Even had an honesty bar. This is such a lovely place. I want to go again, and very soon.

Situated right at the beach with stunning views and sounds of the ocean. You go to Umdloti for the ocean, and there you have it, at your doorstep.
Rooms are very clean and equipped with all that is needed.
The service and hospitality are exceptionally friendly and welcoming.

We broke down on the N2 on a big road trip and needed a place to stay while repairing our car. John and Sharron went out of their way to accommodate us and provide local advice. And it was a nice place to be stuck! Good sized, clean rooms with amazing views (and sounds!) right on the Ocean.

The nice view on the ocean from the room and also from the bathroom makes definitely up for the basic room, poor WIFI, soso breakfast. The place is close to the airport, I had paid for a transfer from the airoport, but due to miscommunication, nobody showed up, yes, after three phonecalls, almost an hour later. No proper compensation. That was bad. (.....the swimmingpool is a big bath)

From fantastic seaviews to gracious and friendly hosts this place is a hit. I would come back soon. Comfortable surroundings and even a doggie is to be expected. A home away from home. Book early as it fills up quickly.

This place is great value for money. Friendly service from our hosts, Terry and Miralee. Accomodation was clean and comfortable. Breakfast was very good. Also a great view, to top it all off. Well worth a visit.

Just stayed over for one night, as we were flying the next day. It's proximity to the airport is another big plus - it takes 5 minutes.

Really enjoyed our stay. Managers were very accommodating and friendly. Woke up with a beautiful sunrise.

Most of my reviews I end up giving benefit over doubt so I guess it's only fair for me to try and do the same for this establishment.

Arrival:

We were met by a friendly lady who checked us in, given the house rules and keys and showed to our room. Quick and easy no fuss.

We just confirmed during the check in if our request for halaal food would be met. Sadly though the lady explained that she doesn't know what halaal means.

Here I felt a bit uneasy, as when booking there is a dietary requirement section which you have to complete, another thing is that, the establishment is in the hospitality industry and it would be of interest to the establishment if they were to understand and familiarise themselves with something like this. Being in Durban with a large muslim community and all hotels and guest houses knowing what it is, it would be assumed that this would be regularly understood. Anyway, after speaking to the lady and explaining her what halaal actually is, she said we need not worry as we will be catered for.

Room:
Basic Basic Basic. 2 three quarter beds, making up an extra wide queen size bed.
Large shower, clean bathroom and toilet.

All linen and towels were fresh and clean. The room doesn't have any closet space, there is a small area where you can leave your luggage at the entrance of the room but that's it.

No safe. No shampoo's or soap. No microwave or fridge ( if you decide to bring back anything to eat or drink from a restaurant, you can't keep it in your room for later, instead you have to go down to the main communal area, use the microwave there and perhaps store your drinks there too? That's an assumption, because we received a key to the communal area, where you are allowed to take drinks from the fridge at an extra charge. As for storing your own drinks there or using the microwave, as I said I am assuming that it wouldn't have been an issue. However a major inconvenience if you one of those who have midnight snacks or rather just an inconvenience having to go down to the ground floor.

The room doesn't have a TV. If it's raining and you feel like you gonna stay indoors, you can either sleep,or read a book if you into that type of thing. But if you feel like kicking back and relaxing watching a good movie, that's not happening. You have to get out of the room and drive to the mall to watch a movie in the cinema. Alternatively you could finish up your mobile data and browse the net as the WiFi is really not good (probably alot of contention on the WiFi as all guests are using it).

However it was good to sit outside on the balcony and just stare at the ocean. The chairs on the balcony aren't very comfortable though, so that idea might be short lived.

There's no aircon in the room so it tends to get really stuffy in the morning during sunrise as the room heats up, and you can't even open the sliding door and continue sleeping as the monkeys might invade your space. No biggy but it's something that needs to be looked at. The fan is decent and may help a bit.

The room is very comfortable though and very minimilist retro in terms of decor. But short of alot of basics. ALOT!!!

Views:
No problems here, top class 180 degree sea views.

Breakfast:
The lady did explain that she managed to get some fish for us for breakfast as that is halaal. I didn't take up that offer as I personally don't eat much fish.

Omlettes were really great. The hash browns too. There is a small spread of some Cereals, cheese, fruit salad and yogurt.

I really enjoyed the breakfast, it was good and sufficient. I just wish there was something meaty to accompany the omelette. I honestly will give the breakfast a proper 8 of 10 if it needs to be rated. If there was some halaal sausages or breakfast beef, hands down I'd give a 10.

Parking:
A small parking bay off street but sadly nothing secure. Now it was fine because we had a rental car so I wasn't all that worried. But had I went with my own car, I would have been on my nerves worrying about my car standing just off the road through the evening with no security .

Location:
Right at the end of the road in a quiet Cul de Sac in Umdloti. A car is needed if you need to get something from the local store. Unless you have time to take a walk, the closest store is quite some distance away.

Pros:
Great sea view
Good breakfast
Clean rooms, linen and towels
Location
Ease of Access

Cons:
Very basic rooms
No personal Fridge
No Safe in rooms
No TV
Bad WiFi
Unsecured Parking
No personal Microwave
No Aircon

Conclusion:

This could be an awesome place to stay. It could be one of the top B&B's around. It could be a place I'd recommend and return to. But unfortunately it's not.

It lacks basic necessities. On a rainy day if you are forced to stay indoors there is absolutely nothing you can do in your own private room besides read or sleep. You can't even keep take away meals and just be cosy if you like.

Having stayed along almost every place along beach road in Umdloti, I always said one day I'd like to stay at Greenfire. This time we did and sadly it was a bit of a disappointing one.

For me it seemed like a glorified much smarter backpacker lodge. Where if you need to do anything, it would need to be done in communal areas (again let me state these things, watch TV, warm food, use a refrigerator). That really does remind me of backpacker lodges I've visited around the world on travels, only this one was really smart and way too expensive but it offered a good breakfast .

At ZAR1500 a night, it is highly over priced and under equipped. The only perks is the view, fortunately cleanliness and a decent breakfast. It's not really a bang for buck place, but if you are forced to book and in a last minute booking situation, it would be one of those to book.

If you are a foreigner coming to South Africa with Dollars, Euros or Pounds or any of the stronger currencies this might be cheap to you.

But as a South African using ZAR it's not worth it, you could rent a holiday flat out at half the price or book a hotel which will have covered all the basis and receive much more for your money's worth.

Suggestions:

Get TV'S, Aircons, microwaves, Safes, fridges, comfortable balcony furniture. Give some light toiletries as well. Learn about different cultures and people that might visit and find out how to best accommodate them.

Relook at the exorbitant rates, at ZAR750 this would be much more worth it. At ZAR1500 it would be expected that everything above gets taken care of.

Will I stay here again?

Probably not at that price. If the place is better equipped than maybe but at a fraction of the price.

Will I Recommend?
If you have a lot of money to spend on a place to just sleep and shower then definitely yes. If you looking for holiday comfort and you still have alot to spend then No.

If you are one of those on a tight budget looking for accommodation then definitely not.

This is not to down talk the establishment, but an opinion of an avid traveller on how to better the establishment. It could be much better , so perhaps time to dot the i's and cross the t's and make it what it should be.

Nice and newly furnished hotel with friendly staff. However, they found it difficult to get up and arrange for breakfast at 6.30 am when we were hitting for the nearby Airport. The ocean view is stunning. No AC and no TV, the latter good for family-get-together when it is holiday. A bit odd with the opening in the wall between the toilet and the bed, which you could not close. Nice breakfast.

Gorgeous view, tasty meals and fast internet. I was surprised to see kettle in the room. If you are into surfing, nearby waves are cool and it’s close to surf schools. Hosts gave us surf instructor’s contact.
