Alto Lido Hotel garners praise from guests for its spotless accommodations and vibrant atmosphere, particularly enjoying the nightly entertainment and lovely pool area. The location is deemed convenient, with easy access to local attractions, though some travelers note it's a bit of a trek from the harbor. While the rooms are celebrated for their cleanliness and views, opinions on the hotel's amenities and service show more variation. Visitors appreciate the variety at breakfast, but some are concerned about extra charges and the dining space's cramped feel. Overall, the staff is commended for their friendliness, even as a few guests suggest service could be more consistent.

This was our second visit to Alto Lido and we were not disappointed in any way by our room, 7th floor at the back of the hotel. We had a good view of the pool 4 floors below us and a fantastic sea view due to the fact the Alto Lido is on a hill and so overlooks the hotels immediately in front of the sea, so big tick for room 752. We were somewhat disappointed with the fact you still have to pay here to use the room safe, really, 20 euros for 10 nights. Also the cups in the kitchenette were espresso size and when we asked if we could have some cups from the restaurant which were a more normal size, we were just told no! I understand that the hotel canā€™t let everyone take cups back to their room, but the hotel was 60% occupancy so it wouldnā€™t have hurt on this occasion. Also we were told half board buffet dinners were either 6pm or 8pm, you had to choose which sitting. Actually the restaurant was virtually empty when we went in at 8pm and we then went in when we felt like it as it was never really that busy, which is why we usually never opt for half board and certainly never will again in Funchal, thereā€™s just no need as there are so many places to eat at reasonable prices. All in all, a good hotel to stay at but donā€™t expect to rely on the shuttle buses as at 9am, 11.30am, 3.30pm and 5.30pm they are not really very useful, better to get yourself a Giro card and use the local buses, cheap and plentiful, if a bit of a gamble getting a seat! I will say that a few days after we arrived we suddenly had noisy neighbours, after not hearing a thing our neighbours suddenly came back to their room at midnight and put the tv on very loudly, in Portuguese and with singing! When we mentioned this to reception the following morning we were told they were repeat customers with hearing difficulties but to be fair, we never heard another thing after that, not sure if they were moved or told to quieten down.

We stayed in the Alto Lido for New Year 2019 booked with Jet2 Holidays.

Our room was great, overlooking the pool area with a view of the sea through the buildings opposite. To get a full sea view you would need to be higher up.

We booked a kitchenette which was really useful if you don't want to eat out every night. The only problem was that there are no washing up items provided apart from a tea towel. Rightly so the cleaning staff will not do your pots for you. There is a supermarket very close by which has all the basics. There are numerous bars and restaurants all around an en route into town.

The other facilities in the room were great. A very comfy bed, a powerful and hot shower and a lovely balcony with a table and chairs and one lounger type chair - you might need to draw straws to see who gets to sit on it! It was also really quiet with no noise from outside or the corridors and rooms around.

The buffet breakfast at this hotel was amazing and had everything you could wish for, even sparkling wine. I am really missing this back in the UK eating my porridge! We didn't eat any other meals so I can't comment on dinner etc.

Staff at the hotel were very friendly and spoke good English.

We used the shuttle bus into town a couple of times but it is only every couple of hours and was very full having picked up at the sister hotel up the road. It is a must to book a place with reception.

It took us about half an hour to walk into town. If you are going down to the front be warned there is a very steep hill to get up on your way back. If you have any mobility issues I would suggest getting the bus.

All in all a really enjoyable stay at this hotel.

This is an excellent hotel with good rooms, pools and wonderful terrace. All staff were efficient and pleasant especially reception and restaurant. Top marks to Humberto's team in the restaurant and especially Humberto who made our visit very special. Well done to the Chefs, the food was plentiful, varied and delicious. There is entertainment every night for those who require it. Very importantly for me, there is complimentary tea in the room but you'll need to supply your own coffee and milk and there is an efficient hairdryer and small fridge. It's a short ride on the bus to Funchal Centre for about 1 euro 70 cents or a 40 minute walk. There are shops a short walk away and Supermarkets and Restaurants very close by. Like all of Madeira, expect to have to walk up and down hills for the seafront and to get around the Island.I will stay at this hotel again when I return to Madeira.

Stayed here over the weekend and did not really enjoy our stay at all. This hotel deserves 3 stars at best. We stayed in a few other hotels before in Funchal so we can compare standards quite well. I would recommend you to stay at a different hotel for example Porto Mare for 4 stars or spend the extra money and stay at one of the savoy hotels where they know about customer service and making you feel special as a guest.
Alto Lido does not pay attention to detail: rooms looked quite cheap and not perfectly clean, the supplied shower gel/ shampoo was disgusting and smelled like spew (must be the cheapest option available for hotels), included breakfast was average at best plus they make you wear a plastic glove at the buffet, ordered a ā€œfreshā€ orange juice at the pool bar, which was not even fully fresh but instead a mix with sugary juice concentrate and they still charge high prices for them. All in all not an enjoyable stay definitely wonā€™t be back!

Having initially visited in 1990 I was amazed by the hotels recent refurbishment. On arrival offered a courtesy glass of Madeira at reception. Additional payment of ā‚¬13 for room safe. Upper floor side sea view room was comfortable although had to request air-con as temperatures unprecedented at this time of year. Staff also provided additional electric fan which was a bonus. Staff throughout were friendly and engaging. The courtesy bus into Funchal was used on several occasions which was of great benefit. Used local ā€œSunrise ā€œ agency to book excursions which offered alternative options. Breakfast buffet offered varied choice to include Prosecco. Local restaurants offered Tourist Menu, ā€œCome Togetherā€ highly recommend. Well stocked local supermarket provided all requirements. Had a relaxing, memorable stay. Would recommend Madeira for all ages although if itā€™s discoā€™s, bars and nightlife youā€™re after I would consider alternative options.

Modern, very clean Hotel with helpful Reception staff and a personal thank you to Humberto in the restaurant. Booked on B&B basis. Whilst they do require you to book a breakfast 'slot' when you check in, take no notice just go down when you are ready no one is on the Breakfast check-in anyway ! Breakfast plentiful and of good quality. Do not be put off by the size of the Restaurant, it was never really busy at breakfast, no queues for food and with very little English clients, the toaster was all ours :) A nice drop of courtesy prosecco was available at breakfast if required - just help yourselves. Rooms cleaned daily with fresh towels and bedding every day if you require. The pool area initially seemed small for the size of the Hotel but as most clients took to daily trips and walking , there was never a problem with getting a sun bed even at 11am. Ideally situated within few minutes walk of restaurants. Do try TILES and GOYA our personal favorites. It is 10 mins drive to Funchal main town and Marina but a courtesy bus makes 4 x trips there and back a day or local bus only EUR 1.95 each. Pool towels are provided on arrival, but if you wish to change them you need to take them to the inside Spa and they charge EUR 1 per towel. Overall no complaints although one silly thing .........the water pressure in the shower is quite poor. But we are on holiday so if it takes longer then so be it . Will be returning very soon

I have stayed in Funchal many many times, everything from 2* apartments to 5* luxury hotels in the town centre. This modern well decorated hotel is ridiculous value for money for the quality and location. Everything ran smoothly and I opted for the highest floor option as had a few extras included, sauna spa etc, which unfortunately were closed due to Covid when I arrived. However I really enjoyed my stay here and everything spotlessly clean for my 14 night stay.

There are many room types so choose what you require, don't opt for the cheapest and then moan there were better rooms and areas in the hotel than what you received. This hotel is under priced in my opinion.
Lovely room, spacious and air conditioned with lots of wardrobe space The bathroom very nice with a good walk in efficient shower. Shower gel, shampoo and conditioner were topped up daily.
Large balcony with side sea view 2 chairs and a table with great views in the morning over to the Desertas Islands.

They should really add the safe fee to the room price though, so many people disliked paying the 13ā‚¬ per week fee, just mark the room price up by 2ā‚¬ a day to include it and all problems solved!

The breakfast had a super choice, hot and cold, and you were met and shown to a table at a time you chose at check in. Buffet service with Covid regulations in place. I could not fault this and the staff were really kind and keen to make you welcome.

Location was fine for me and good exercise walking to and from the harbour front.
Only used the pool once but very modern and clean. The hotel is very close to a wide range of restaurants and shops. There is currently building work to the right of the hotel as you look out to sea. I think there are some apartments being built. This never bothered me as was out all day but you would hear it if you were by the pool.

I will be returning in November 2022 for another stay and this time have booked a sea view suite, hopefully they will be open as right beside the current building works. If not then so be it and I will happily stay in one of the Premium rooms.

We have just returned from Alto Lido and although the reception area is really pleasant and appealing over all we were disappointed in our stay . A complicated layout is not helping the visitors . We had booked a suite but were given an ā€œapartmentā€ which in fact was just two interconnecting rooms the second having a kitchenette. No soft furnishings . The breakfast every morning was supposedly hot and cold buffet but would have been better described as barely luke warm and cold buffet , even when we attended as soon as it opened at 7am . The pools are nice but not sufficient in size if the hotel was full. Terribly uncomfortable sun loungers top off a disappointing stay .
Pleased we only booked a week and lost 1.5 days due to being diverted to Tenerife due to high winds I think if we had been booked for 2 weeks we would have asked to move

The previous good reviews cover all the detail accurately in my view, so Alto Lido deserves every credit for comfort, efficiency and excellent value for money. I'm unable to tolerate gluten, onions and garlic, so skilled Chef Mendes kindly prepared soup and main course specially for me each day. Restaurant Manager Humberto led well by example, ably assisted by Assistant Manager Delia, so the happy team of waiting staff all worked very hard to achieve a high standard overall. Receptionist Christine had a great sense of humour and was extremely helpful, as were the other receptionists. Evening entertainment was good, though I mention that I would have deeply appreciated more traditional Portuguese music occasionally. My thanks for an excellent stay.

Tony. This hotel is on a very flat stretch of road. I have stayed here with my wife before who has walking probs but no trouble here. We are going again in October. To walk into the city centre there is one long downhill stretch, but the hotel offers a free bus or a local bus is only about 2 euros.
