We have been to Madeira many times previously and stayed at 4 and 5 Star hotels including the Cliff Bay and the Vidamar. We hadn’t stayed in this area of Funchal before so Baia Azul was something new for us and we were very impressed by the standards of this hotel. We were aware before booking that there was construction work close to the hotel but this did not spoil our time at the pool or in our sea view room. This hotel is spotless . Everything is very clean and Covid regulations are adhered to. The rooms are modern and fresh and cleaned to a high standard on a daily basis. We were bed & breakfast and thought the choice of fresh fruit , salad , cereals , cold meats and cheese was served swiftly and efficiently by the very pleasant staff. Hot freshly prepared breakfast food was available and did look very nice but we didn’t try this. We had lunch in the hotels Sal restaurant on the day we left and the food and service here was amazing , sitting on the terrace in the sun with a beautiful view of the sea . The lido promenade is outside the hotel which is great for walking either towards Funchal or to Camara dos Lobos. We found some lovely restaurants nearby , Cris’s, Leenos, Restaurante Marisqueira O Barqueiro, and Nos Copos for drinks in the evening. The weather was lovely and warm at the end of July. We are back in Madeira at the Savoy Palace in September this year but we will return to this hotel at some point as it is great value for money.

Very stressful breakfast experience, waiters are stressed, guests are stressed. You have a buffet that is fairly consistent until food is over and that is it. Guests form lines across the room and it’s incredibly noisy with the cutlery and chatting, by the time it’s your turn you could have probably finished eating. If you just wanted to get some fruit you’ll probably give up. In today’s case there was no fruit other than canned. With no intention of reposition. I’m gluten and lactose intolerant I rely on fruit to have a balanced filling breakfast. As you go and sit by the balcony the sun is so strong it will burn your skin, you are hardly able to open your eyes, there’s a only a couple tables in the shade but not enough. Tables are so close together if a group of four is sat next to you you won’t be able to hear your partner. Overall an awful experience, as we disinfect our hands coming in they should let us just go and grab what we need. It might sound nice to have someone serving you but in reality they never served exactly what I want, if there’s lots of it they will fill my plate without asking how much if there’s little they try to stretch it, instead of getting more from the kitchen. Waiters talk about guest occasionally and other subjects not related to work, they shout across the room to talk with each other. On good days they will make an effort to be friendly and smile. I literally left the food in the table and left because: Table was in the heat - table it self burned. 4 guests next to the table chatting loudly. No fruit other than canned. - no more fruit coming. The room was loud and crowded and I was rushed choosing an alternative for fruit ..tomatoes?

I visited this hotel for a week returning yesterday. I stayed at this beautiful hotel in 2018 and I gave it a five star review. There are many positives about this hotel such as the excellent standard of cleanliness and the service. The beds are also very comfy and the breakfast is very good. However I have knocked one star off because since my last visit things have gone downhill a little. There is no longer a well stocked mini bar in the rooms and there is no coffee and tea and there was both of these on my last visit. Also the food has gone downhill and I was really not impressed with the quality of food served around the pool. I was given an under cooked burger with a slimy egg that I could not eat. Having said all of that I really enjoyed my stay and would still return but it is a great pity this lovely hotel has allowed its very high standards to slip.

Currently staying at this hotel (7 nights left of 10) Half board booked in the uk before travelling on the basis of the description as buffet meals of high quality. At check in we were told we had to book our meals for a specific time which in itself was awkward as we have a lot of trips at differing times and not in the nature of buffet dining. At the allocated time we went to dinner and it became apparent that it wasn’t buffet at all. There was a chiller with salads and desserts which we were told we could have for starter and dessert and then we were given a menu and told we had to order the main off that. The menu was sparse with barely any choice (3 options) and all non suitable. We asked if we could order something else due to dietary preferences (we specified plain and simple like a chicken breast with potatoes or chips easy enough to knock up) and were told no, it was one of the 3 options or don’t eat. We ordered a dish and asked if this could be cooked without the sauce on one meal due to Dietary requirements. Then we were told to get salad to start. At the “buffet” we were led round and served and it was made clear it was one visit only. We returned to the table to eat the salad and once we had finished they brought the main course. It was dry, burnt and cold. Clearly had sat too long under a heat lamp. Upon starting to eat it was clear that the food wasn’t cooked fresh as the sauce had been ineffectively wiped off the meal that we had requested to be cooked without it. The meal had a small amount of potato and chicken, no veg and no option to get more salad. We had two bites each and couldn’t eat it. The waiter who took the plates looked at them but didn’t ask if everything was ok despite the complete meals being returned. Dessert we opted for cheese and biscuits which was on the menu to at least get some food in us. We were sent to the “buffet” and all that was available was cheese (no biscuits). Next morning the breakfast “buffet” (one visit, all served) was good aside from this so we spoke to our rep and asked to be changed to bed and breakfast basis and refunded for the evening meals for the rest of the holiday. She said she would see what she could do. We informed her that we would be eating elsewhere from that evening and she said the hotel had agreed to this. This morning (two days later) we were given a note from the jet2 rep saying we had been moved onto B and B basis however the hotel would not be refunding us for the evening meals. This is completely unacceptable as we have incurred additional expense having to dine out every evening AND the inconvenience of leaving the hotel and having to walk or pay for a taxi. We have never had an issue with half board anywhere in the world (including in Portugal) and should not be expected to pay for something which is not being provided. Sadly this is marring our stay with worry as we bought money only to cover things outside of meals which we had paid for. I shall be updating this review at the end of the holiday to cover all other aspects of our stay including staff, facilities, entertainment and management taking into account any attempts by the hotel to rectify this situation regarding our refunds.
