We were stolen twice, during a 2 days visit. It’s a very nice historical hotel. There is no parking or convenience for elderly persons or people with disability. Our shocking experience when arriving was seen a garbage collection point the the entrance of the hotel. We needed to take the suitcases upstairs. Our room had spectacular views of the river and Alfama neighborhood, but risky balconies for children. The staff was nice and we would have feel like visiting a friend except for our terrible experience. There are no elevators or some other regular amenities in the location. The streets are dirty. The hotel that was recently remodeled but has significant signs of abandonment. There are many other great choices in Linbon to visit. Since we are not the only one reporting been stole from, I highly recommended you to pick a different location and avoid to be picked up from your luggage. …
As soon as you read the words stuccoed ceilings you know you're stepping into an old world, but this is the best of a bygone era. In old Lisbon, in Alfama, walking distance to most things of interest, plus quaint shops and restaurants this is a one out of the box find. The Palacete was a private family dwelling in the 19th century. Careful restoration showcases many of the buildings period features, including stuccoed ceilings, stain-glass windows, tall windows and interesting, elaborate curved wooden door frames. Though old, restoration has allowed for lots lovely natural light. The Moorish influence can be found outside in the grotto with beautiful Morocco-style tiles. To get to the grotto you'll pass along the terrace garden that overlooks the Tagus River. How grand it must have been in the early days before the buildings went up in front, including the port where most cruise ships dock today. This is a great place to take a gin and tonic or tea. Decor and furnishings inside is a combination of old and new. Individual pieces have been sourced from far and wide. I wasn't a fan of the modern art in the rooms, but this is a personal taste thing. I would have kept it all old-world, or perhaps used historical prints of Old Lisbon to tell more of the history of both the house and Lisbon. Rooms, and bathrooms are super spacious. I stayed in the Junior Suite and the Deluxe King... a lovely gesture by Rui, the hotel's manager, for me to experience both as I stayed for 5 nights. My beds were on the side of being over firm, but many travelers I've met along the way like a good firm bed. When you're welcomed at the front door, it feels like stepping into your wealthy grandmother's house, and you wishing all the while that you are first in line to inherit all the loveliness your eyes are trying to take in, once grandmother moves on! The staff were lovely and always around to offer assistance and prepare a sumptuous breakfast served in the stunning, period Breakfast Room. I would have loved some appropriate music playing in the breakfast room to soften the harsh silence when I was the only one at breakfast. If you love modern conveniences like a lift... this place is not for you. You will have to climb stairs to your room. It also does not have a business facility, but the free wifi was perfect. It wasn't the easiest place to find at first, but once I had clear instructions from the staff I was able to tell uber drivers where to collect me from. Beware walking on your own late in the night into the lane to access the front door of the Palacete... I had an unpleasant encounter but as an experienced traveler...not engaging with the menace and fast footing it lost him. The rooms don't come cheap, but then most unique experiences never do. It's a perfect honeymoon destination, girls get away or perfect for the solo woman traveler. I certainly will return.…
My wife and I stayed at the Palacete for 3 nights in late September 2018. On our last night, the ceiling in our room collapsed on us in the dead of night, causing serious injury to my wife. I narrowly escaped serious injury, perhaps death when a large piece of the plaster missed my head by mere centimeters. The collapse was followed by paramedics taking us to the hospital where we spent the evening in emergency. We were able to recover enough to make the flight home the next day. In the ensuing confusion and the mess in our suite, some personal articles of value were lost in the rubble as we were forced to leave quickly in case of further ceiling collapse. Since that time, the hotel has admitted to full responsibility for the event. The hotel contacted their insurance company who advised they would fully investigate our personal property losses, medical costs and non property claim. To this date, 5 months have passed and no progress has been made other than 'we continue to investigate'. Neither the hotel or the insurance company have reimbursed us for any of the above claim. We are extremely disappointed in both the hotel and the insurance company as we continue to wait and experience delay after delay in resolving this. We are also disappointed that our memories of a vacation in beautiful Portugal are marred by the ceiling collapse in the Sophia Room. At the time of the incident, we had advised the Palacete that we would not post on any social media as we viewed this as an unfortunate accident and they thanked us and advised us that this would be handled quickly and a top priority for the hotel and their goodwill. With no resolution in sight, we are reluctantly posting this negative review of the Palacete Chafariz d'El Rei.…
We could have been killed! In the middle of the night, while we were asleep, the ceiling above our bed collapsed over top of us! If my Husband had not moved over to the left, he would have been maimed or killed. I was struck with blunt force on my head and shin while I was asleep. In shock I sprang out of the bed in the pitch black and heard my husband ask me if I was ok. My forehead had a goose egg, my right eye was bleeding down the side of my face and my shin was swollen. This happen Sept. 29, 2018. The hotel has taken full responsibility, yet we have spent over $1,000 in prescriptions, medical forms and information they have requested. We also, due to the fear of the ceiling erupting further, had to dash out of the room. I waited downstairs for the ambulance. My husband gathered all our belongings together as quickly as possible. In the frantic pace, he may have missed one of my diamond earrings and his glasses (probably covered with plaster) or got lost in the clean up and not reported. I have experienced vertigo, nightmares, stress rashes due to this incident. 5 months later and their insurance company has given us nothing but more stress. As if they were the ones, that were almost killed! This is not a cheap hotel and I am almost certain any other high end hotel, the owner would have reached out and done what ever he needed to, to make sure we were looked after. It's been a nightmare! I have nightmares of ceilings collapsing over top me and it is no fun. Shame on them!…
Wonderful building, incredible atmosphere! Very clean and very good breakfast also. Of course the people working there are all very nice and very helpful if you need information about your tour in Lisbon. It is an unforgettable experience!
