Neighbourhood
Chiado & Carmo
The traditionally trendy "Chiado" (literally, "squeak", the nickname of a 16th century poet) offers plenty of cafes, restaurants and bars where you can stop for a cafe or cocktail, after exploring its streets, shops, art galleries, theaters, museums and viewpoints. It's also the home to the statue of the famous statue of portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa, having is usual espresso at "A Brasileira" as he used to. You can also enjoy breathtaking views of Lisbon from the Elevador de Santa Justa or the Carmo Convent, for example. A commercial neighborhood at its core, especially for its Garrett and Carmo streets, Chiado is to this day a mandatory visit in Lisbon.

We had a two bedroom/two bathroom apartment on the 2nd floor. The entire building is in a former ancient apartment building that the owner's great-grandson has renovated. And it is fantastic. Lovely old exposed beams and ancient stonework are mixed with the modern features. Ours was spacious and had three huge windows in the living area which had huge floor to ceiling wooden shutters. All of the shades are electronic, the kitchen is entirely modern, the fridge is stocked with fresh oranges to make juice for yourself, water bottles that they replace as are used, ham, cheese, eggs, yogurt, and milk for your breakfast & are replaced if finished. They place croissants and bread rolls in a bag placed on your doorknob each early morning, coffee capsules and teas are replaced if finished. Bathrooms and showers are all modern with huge rain showers and plentiful hot water. The beds are huge and comfortable, pillows are extremely large and fluffy. And if you require A/C it's available in all of the rooms and it is very powerful and great. Negatives, sorry to say there are, but only a few. Firstly the lighting is poor. Design takes precedent & we'd have preferred just old-fashioned lamps that are practical. As it were, the bedside lamps have to be extended upwards just to get some light for the entire room. Next is the bathroom in the master bedroom. Well, I suppose in order to preserve the ancient beams that is right between the bedroom and bathroom, the owner didn't want to destroy the beauty of the beams so had a glass wall placed between bathroom and bedroom. It would have been good to have been shown this on the website because while my husband and I know each other really well, still we appreciate privacy when in the toilet! The housekeeper failed to replace amenities because we happened to leave the previous set on the wooden bench in our shower once. Also we found all of the front desk staff to be extremely friendly, welcoming, and accommodating to our questions. Except for one. The young man who checked us in seemed friendly upon first meeting. The next time a few days later he didn't seem as friendly. Also at this second meeting my husband had made a comment about not remembering where we were in relation to a place and wanted a map. The young man didn't seem pleased when my husband asked for a map; he was told that he was already given a map upon check in, that the clerk remembered giving him one for certain. We've never come across any hotel that refused giving out multiple maps before this. But apparently this guy seemed to be a bit arrogant after talking to him since checking us in. That's a bad attitude to have in hospitality no matter where in the world one is. Otherwise, like I mentioned, other staff were so helpful and accommodating. They even tried their best to get our laundry done in time for our departure, but it was not possible. One reason is because the same young man gave us erroneous information that turnaround time for laundry would be 24 hours; well, it turned out to be 48 hours instead and by the time we found out it would be too late as we'd be departing. But the kindness of those particular staff members about trying their best to help us will be remembered. The location can't be beat. It was on a quiet street, but a few steps away from the crazy Rua Garrett (corner is Bertrand, the oldest bookshop in the world). Another few steps uphill is the lovely Bairro Alto; go here for the authentic restaurants. All in all, the apartments are great. Would not hesitate to recommend for space though it is pretty pricey it's worthwhile in the end.

What an amazing place. Beautiful apartment, and great location. I travelled with my mother and husband. The staff were incredibly helpful with finding places where mum could easily get to with restricted mobility and couldn’t do enough to help. We loved the decor (apart from the see through loo in our bedroom), and would love to go back. It’s not cheap, but you certainly get what you pay for.

We stayed in the Flora Chiado apartments for 5 days and couldn’t fault our stay there. The apartments are very nicely decorated, spacious and excellently located. Breakfast ingredients are provided daily in the fridge and then each morning fresh bread and croissants are delivered to the door at 8am! Great way to start the day! The Apartments are literally next door to Alma restaurant which is a Michelin star restaurant and in the next street is another Michelin star restaurant called Belcanto (where we had a superb meal). A few doors away on the corner of the same street as the apartments is a very good informal restaurant that also does delicious food. The reception and other staff were very friendly and helpful. We highly recommend these apartments.

We loved our stay. Beautiful and stylishly converted apartments on a lovely quiet street which is literally around the corner from major shopping / entertainment areas. Great service by staff - very responsive pre visit to help book restaurants and plan our trip. Highly recommend.

We LOVED the Flora Chiado Apartments! My husband and i stayed in 1C and our adult kids stayed in 1A...both had a terrace off the back where we would sit and enjoy our coffee in the morning and wine later in the day. In 1A, the kids also had 3 glass doors that opened to small balconies overlooking the street which was so cool....we would open them up in the evening to feel the fresh air and hear the buzz of the city. The people that worked at the front desk were SO helpful with recommending things to do and restaurants to eat in. But, they really blew us away when we were not quite sure where to park and one of them went with us to park the car so we wouldn’t get lost. They were so kind and truly cared about making our stay perfect.

We had the same driver--who was a hoot. The service is probably more expensive than you could get by going online but was easy to arrange--we ctually used him to take us back to the airport as well
