Set on the absolute waterfront of Cascais’s dramatic Atlantic coastline, Farol Hotel reflects the unique charm of the township. Delightful old-world houses and cobbled streets frame a graceful bay on Portugal’s spectacular Estoril Coast to tell the story of a bygone era. The capital, Lisbon and the international airport are an easy 35-minute drive along excellent roads. A local train also runs between the city and Cascais. Lisbon is served by full service and budget airlines from all the major European hubs, which include Frankfurt, Paris, London and Zurich plus Stockholm, and Moscow. Arrive fuss-free and in style at Lisbon International Airport with a pre-arranged Farol Hotel limousine to meet you and transfer the short scenic trip to Cascais. As a proud member of prestigious Design Hotels, Farol Hotel is a wonderfully eclectic composition of adventurous architecture that embraces a remodeled 19th century private mansion that was once owned by the Count of Cabral, together with unique contemporary additions. The result is an inspire union of the old and the new. The Farol Hotel has a non-smoking policy in all its areas.

Detailed Reviews
We spent a fabulous 5 nights stay at this small 33 room boutique hotel with our 2 daughters (10 and 13). We were incredibly fortunate to get excellent rates due to the lack of airbridges between the UK and Portugal at the time of booking which we were grateful for. We had rooms 210 and 211 ocean facing design rooms. Rooms were spotlessly clean, functional with very comfortable beds and pillows although on the smaller side the views made up for this. Both rooms had small balconies. Bathroom again, small and functional. The rooms have external electronic shutters which block the light, they are noisy going up and down. The rooms also overlook the restaurant area which could bother some people as the noise definitely floats up. This didn't bother us as we were out in the evenings. Breakfast was included in our rate and was of a very high standard. Fabulous quality bread, cakes, pastries along with a selection of cold meats / cheeses. We were also able to order hot food from a menu. Breakfast / Restaurant service was professional and efficient. We had dinner twice in the restaurant. Eating from both menu's (Japanese and the regular menu). Both were excellent, although on the expensive side. The pool is salt water, not heated but was a perfect temperature when we were there mid August. Plenty of sun beds to choose from with stunning views. Check in / out was efficient. From a Covid perspective there was sanitiser stations at all appropriate places. Staff and guests wore masks while inside the public places and tables and sun lounges were socially distanced. Look forward to visiting again.

We loved our visit at Farol hotel due to the amazing hospitality provided by the staff, amazing view of the ocean as the hotel is literally on a cliff. The front desk staff specifically Michael Price was great. He genuinely took care of us, provided recommendations for tours, restaurants, and catered to a barrage of questions since this was our first visit to Portugal. We stayed at the Farol suite with Jacuzzi, the view on the patio was great. The hotel is also walking distance to the town center, Boca de inferno and many other local attractions. My recommendation for improvement would be updated wash rooms and general modern touches in the suite as there was not enough space to put stuff in the vanity area. Also, there needs to be more staff at the restaurant as when it was busy the staff was getting overwhelmed serving everyone since the buffet is no longer self serve due to covid. The breakfast area also needs to be monitored for social distancing as on Saturday it was completely full which made us nervous. But, overall amazing visit and we will surely return to this hotel.

I’ve thought long and hard about what to say about the Farol Hotel. I think that individual experience depends very much on how much you paid for your room and accordingly how your expectations are set. We paid c£215 per night for a spacious room but without the sea view. We found the bar prices quite steep.
And for us the Farol absolutely delivered. After a few years cooped up mostly in land I was determined to be as close to the sea as possible, and the Farol can’t get closer. The pool area is simple but shows off the amazing setting, the pool isn’t massive but is unheated seawater which compliments the Atlantic vibe. The terraces, bar and restaurant have stunning views.
The staff were uniformly attentive and friendly, reception’s tip to go to Guincho beach was excellent. There is a metalled cycle track along the coast which makes it very easy to get to. We used the hotel bikes which could use some tlc, maybe take for a test ride first as there are other hire options.
Our room was very pleasant and immaculately clean. In the interests of balance I think it’s been a while since the hotel was last refurbished - today you’d find more sockets for example. I suspect that some of the common areas may be ready for a refresh, but given the last couple of years in the hospitality industry it’s not surprising that some things are overdue.
Overall, at the right price, highly recommended and we would go back.

To Mr and Mrs Smith and Design Hotek travellers, of which this hotel is a supposed member, lower your expectations.
Whilst a beautiful location outside the town of Cascais, this is not a 5 star hotel. Aesthetically, the hotel is very run down and in need of TLC - especially the pool area which looks like a 3 star area at best (tired umbrellas, rusty sun loungers and uncomfortable chairs do not make the space enticing). The service by the pool was painfully slow and staff do not tidy up drinks or left over towels until the end of the day.
To not provide complimentary tea or coffee facilities in the room is absolutely absurd, and to charge for coffee pods is absolutely outrageous and again not representative of a 5 star hotel. On arrival, we were not met with a welcome drink or towels - something which we feel is customary for a 5 star hotel.
Overall our stay was very disappointing and we left feeling we had overpaid for the hotel. When checking out, I informed the front of house manager of these issues who noted them down but did nothing to rectify or appease the situation - even a complimentary drink by the pool would have been a nice touch.

+1
I think the best way to start this review would be to say that our stay here was AMAZING. Before booking we read the most recent reviews and these were all mixed. We decided to give it a go anyway and this was the best thing we did. The location is just amazing (just 10 min walk to the historic centre of Cascais). This is not a big hotel, it is small and cosy and the atmosfere is great. We read some of the reviews where people were saying that the furniture could use an upgrade, some were saying that this is not a 5 star hotel and that this place is too expensive for what it has to offer. Well... after my experience here I can assure you that this is not the case. And yes, maybe the room furniture is not the newest and the poshest but the rooms are so cozy and very very clean. We stayed in a Deluxe double room with seaview and it was gorgeous. The view was one of the best. We had the safe, the fridge, the coffee machine with the nespresso pods , teas, water and fruit all included in the room price. The room was cleaned every morning, and every single evening a member of staff was coming to set up the room for the evening, leaving us cake and kombutcha drinks. All this was also included in the room price. I cannot praise enough all the staff for always smiling and making us feel so welcome. They looked after us making sure that we always have everything we need and offering their services for any of our queries. Natalia and Francisco were amazing and it was lovely to have a chat with them every day. The staff was so attentive and our experience of having breakfast( with the most amazing view) was enhanced their hospitality. The gentlemen who cleaned our room every morning had always a big smile on his face and he was greeting us every time we were going out. The room was spottless after he cleaned it. I cannot praise them all enough. It was such a beautiful experience and I would recommend this place to everyone. I forgot to mention the breakfast where the food was so fresh and you could actually feel and see the quality of the food. We traveled a lot and we are used to different types of culinary experiences. These was one of the bests. So please, don't be put down by the negative reviews. I would always recommend this place and would suggest to book the sea view rooms for a complete experience.

Just spent 5 nights here & was a little disappointed after looking forward to a 5* rating experience! We had just traveled from Porto & had stayed in an exceptional 5* hotel there which I highly recommended. The staff here @ the Farol are excellent & from the moment we checked in until we left could not fault them & that includes Reception, restaurants & domestics, what let’s the hotel down is that it was looking a bit tired & requires updating, the rooms are quite small & depressing with limited facilities & to charge for coffee & tea is certainly not on especially for the prices charged for the rooms.
The pool area needs looking at for safety as the steps down are concrete and cannot be seen in certain light as steps! Not good for anyone with limited visibility. On the HIT side the location of the hotel is 1 of the best in Cascais. The Staff are great, The Miss side, Management need to address their * rating.

First, the hotel made "an upgrade" and showed us the room with "sea view" that had a thin line of blue and an iron fence outside the window, right above the restaurant with the air conditioners and all the noise that the open roof restaurant was creating. After we disagreed to stay in that room, they were managing for an hour the other solution and gave a room downstairs. When the night began, the noise outside from the air conditioner that apparently was not functioning well was unbelievable. It was not ours, as in the room it didnt work. When I was called to the reception and asked to solve it, they answered rudely that nothing can be done. So I havent slept for the whole night, noise was starting and stopping, starting again. The door to the garden opens the ways that you can easily hurt your fingers, against all possible rules of secure usage, so I hurt my finger.
Overall, the prices in the restaurants etc are high, the service is average, the food is good, but the problem with the lack of adequate understanding and solving problems spoilt the experience.

We had two ocean front rooms with balconies (213 and 214, I think). They were very nice and looked out onto the beautiful ocean and the surf breaking on the rocks just 50-60 feet away. Towels passed my glasses test (Dry my glasses with them and crystal clear!). Staff was friendly and helpful. Common areas and pool area very nice. Breakfast was good. We had lunch one day at the sushi restaurant and it was good but seemed expensive (16 Euros for 1 tuna + guacamole taco).
Location is great with an easy walk into town.
I would suggest that the negative reviews on the Farol are likely a function of room choice - more so than any other hotel I can think of. If one books the balcony oceanfront rooms, I can't imagine not enjoying them.

The hotel lobby and pool area is spectacular. But once you open the door to your room, you will feel like you are in a different resort. The rooms are small, dated and lack the amenities you’d expect for over 300€ a night. When we asked if there were any better rooms available (we were willing to pay the difference) the front desk staff said they were sold out. But their website has openings listed. When pressed the front desk staff said they only had the penthouse suite for 800€ more a night.
I would not recommend staying at this hotel. Especially avoid room 203.

No we got a taxi from the airport and train plus 2 taxis back to airport
Not a major difference in cost
Also yes there are bikes for hire and a beautiful cycling track along the coast.
No they don't all have usable balconies, some of them are 'Juliette balcony', ring the hotel to ensure you have one of the room above the pool with the balconies that have table and chairs. They are the best.
Best way to get around is by renting a car with GPS if you planing to visit Lisbon. I would not use the train; is my advice. Good luck
