Quinta das Merces - A secret place at the Atlantic Ocean. The Country House - Quinta das Mercês is ideally situated in the protected area of Mount Brasil, in Island Terceira, Azores. It grows from the sea line through the interior within an area of about 35,000 square meters. It gathers the ocean influence with a dense extension of Atlantic woods wrapping an architectural set of great historical and cultural value. The farm roots go back to the XVIth century when the actual farm tenant’s house was built. In the XVIIth century was raised the Manor House to which, in the same century, was added the chapel in all alike a small church. The House and the Chapel are the nucleus of one of the last examples of the Feudal Architecture on the surrounds of the city of Angra do Heroismo. The outside space, with deep connection to the sea, was valorised through a careful landscape architectural project witch faithfully kept the original line of the land, implementing selective areas of leisure. It is a multifaceted space directed to an exacting and qualified tourism demand. The interaction with the sea allows practicing numerous sports in the open wide Atlantic and the dense woods invite to share a relaxing environment. The Country House Quinta das Merces is a unique space where nature perfectly combines with a rich historical patrimony, giving the pleasure of an unforgettable experience.

We have mixed memories of our stay in this historic manor house which we found to be rather eccentric. The room décor is dated (although in keeping with the age of the building) and the rugs in the corridor appeared to be stained, as if cleaned but not dried properly. The owners are friendly enough but the property is run in a rather old-fashioned way, e.g. you leave your keys at the desk when you go out (and yes - they are left there so there is the potential for someone to take them); external doors are often still locked in the morning so you have to ask to go out to the pool and there is strict and complicated distribution of pool and beach towels. Our room was comfortable enough and had a (noisy) ceiling fan. Unfortunately, it did have a very strong smell of damp which hit us when entering the room. We had to throw open the bathroom window and back door (leading to a small private garden) in order to air the room each time we entered it. The property and its history is fascinating; we particularly enjoyed exploring the elegant reception rooms and gardens and the outdoor pool has a wonderful view of the coast. There is also a lovely private chapel in the grounds. Breakfast can be taken indoors or in the central courtyard and has the usual selection of coffee, teas, juices, cereals, fruit salad, sliced meats, yoghurt, rolls, local cheeses and cake and eggs and bacon can be ordered. There is a games room but we didn’t make use of this. Whilst it wasn't a total disaster, we wouldn't stay here again.

This is a really interesting place. On the one hand side, the place is beautiful (outside area, public area, etc.) and they served the best breakfast we had on our entire journey. For this reason I still give two and not just one star. However, there are severe downsides mostly related to the room: In our bathroom we had a big patch of mold on the ceiling above the bathtub. When I say „big“ I mean 20 x 20 centimeters that were greenish/black. The bathroom is also quite worn, the bathtub, for instance, has a damaged spot which is really rusty. And honestly, the bathroom looks not nice due to the beige/brown stone tiles at the wall. Our bedroom and the bathroom was also pretty humid and both smelled really really awful. We were lucky that it was nice and warm so we were able to leave the window always open. Without that, the smell would have been unbearable. However, having the windows always open in a room on ground floor leaves a bit of a bad feeling when you are out as everyone can climb into your room easily… We also were not really convinced with the cleanliness of the room. On the ceiling were some dusty spiderwebs, on the floor (on the terra-cotta tiles) was some white smear at various places, the carpets were stained, and there were also a lot of ants in the room. Luckily, the bed was spotless and clean (but also hard as a rock). Lastly, the walls started to crumble at various spots which also indicates humidity in the walls. We asked other guest at breakfast about their room. They confirmed that there is an odd smell in their room as well but they were more lucky than us as they had a room with no visible mold at the ceiling. One further thing I did not like is that they ask you to leave the key at the front desk when you are out. However, we often found the keys unguarded when we returned from the outside. So everybody could actually take a key and walk into your room when you are out. Last not least, we thought that this place has some kind of “odd vibe” to it. I had the impression, they believe they are some kind of super great luxurious resort — but they are not when you look at the rooms — and hence they feel super proud and almost arrogant. Nobody was unfriendly, I cannot say that, but we did not feel super welcome as we did in other places we stayed at. So I can only say: don’t be blinded by the nice photos you find on their website and on trip advisor. They only show a part of the whole story. The rooms are not as nice as the outside or the public areas you mostly see on their pictures.

Great scenery. Delicate and exquisite house decorations. Spotless service for the quiet and cosy breakfasts in the center patio. The Lady of the house was very sweet and helpful for our first days in the archipelago. Definitely The place to stay near Angra do Heroismo
