Rich with Industrial Diversity, Newcastle attracts mostly Corporate Clientele. Ideally situated between Gauteng, Durban, the Kruger National Park and the Drakensberg. As the Original Farmhouse of Sir Rider Haggard, Author of “King Solomon’s Mines”, our Establishment is nestled at the foothill of the Hilldrop Rocky Range. Built in 1875 and the focal point of our Bed & Breakfast, many a Corporate and Holiday Visitor has shared the history hereof since 29 July 1995. Our rooms are inviting with crisp poly-percale linen enhanced by the rich colours of Persian and Kelim carpets. Each Bedroom walks onto a patio or balcony with Garden or Forest views. Secure parking on premises for each room makes unpacking a breeze. Our 3 Hectare Indigenous Forest hosts an array of birdlife which surrounds the Honesty Bar and Swimming Pool. The Braai Lapa is available for private use and a favourite meeting place.

This was my first time working and staying over in Newcastle, therefore I was not familiar with the standard of accommodation establishments. Well when I arrived I was very pleasantly surprised by Haggards Hilldrop which is tucked away in a very quiet road. The grounds are immaculate and the setting of the whole establishment is well thought out. The pool area has a fully stocked and licensed bar for you to unwind at the end of a busy day. Finding the place is also very easy as there is clear signage from the main streets. The staff was very friendly and informative. The room was very spacious with modern decor, clean white linen, and with all the amenities required for a business trip. They also have a great breakfast spread. Overall you will not regret your decision to stay at Haggards Hilldrop.

I stayed at Haggards Hilldrop overnight for a business trip. Having never stayed in Newcastle before, I was a bit anxious about where to stay but Haggards came recommended by a client.
It was a lovely stay. Rooms were warm and comfortable for winter, there was a generator so we could at least watch TV and the breakfast the next morning was delicious. I will be back.

I find this a difficult review in that I feel that I am 'damning with faint praise.' There was nothing seriously wrong about our stay yet I find it difficult to enthuse about it. We booked on the recommendation of a friend who had stayed there and loved it and perhaps it was pre-covid. We booked on a DBB basis. The Receptionist was charming and gave me a full run down on the establishment. Dinner was in a room with two others present, which made for a fairly depressing atmosphere. There was no choice, but the fillet stir fry we were given was delicious, with a very nice salad. What was curious, was that before my wife had finished her meal, a plate of dessert was put on the table for each of us.. No dessert had been ordered, but it was very tasty. What was even more curious was that we had to walk some distance to the honesty bar across some lawns to select a bottle of wine. The selection was not vast- 4 bottles of white in the wine cooler and about a dozen reds. I would have preferred to dine with my own wine and pay corkage, but I was informed that was not permissible. The room was comfortable and the bathroom well supplied with shampoo, conditioner, body lotion and soap. We saw very few people yet there were cars parked everywhere, so I assume that most were self catering. This lodge is the former home of Sir Rider Haggard who left for England in the early 1900s before he started his writing career . If asked, I would have described Haggards as a Travel Lodge. I Was pleasantly suprised at the service as well as the staff they were friendly as accommodating to my needs as the week progressed thank you for the awesome service .the location was bit hard to find at first maybe changing the sign might help for future customers that visit ,the history of the place was awesome to read .It is always nice when we can let history just keep going so that the future can also remember what it was like for us when we grew older and what we experienced during our lifetime.

What a pleasure to enjoy the old fashioned welcome to a lovely site and garden in the forest, but still have wifi in the room, a desk with enough light to work comfortably, and a lovely hot shower. The meals (dinner must be arranged) were superb and when it turned cold the fireplace was lovely and cosy. The local cats made me very much at home, but won't bother you if you are not a "cat person". If you can, try and get a room with a balcony like the log cabins so you can enjoy bird watching in comfort on your own while sipping a drink from the honesty bar. All round a most pleasant experience.

A gem hidden in central KZN.
Neat and clean guest house, situated in a lovely area with lots of trees away from the noice in town yet less than 3km from the CBD.
Excellent staff, from the time of making a booking to your arrival at reception, room service with home type meals and well trained staff.
Curtacy call on the day of arrival to confirm your booking is in place just tops up what you can expect at Haggards on Hilldrop.

Another awesome stay at Haggards, in Newcastle, KZN. the clean, spacious room, with Wi-Fi facilities and a coffee station was welcoming after a day on the road. The freshly sanitized surfaces accommodated my belongings and my Covid anxiety. Friendly and warm breakfast service accompanied by a stellar meal the next morning completed another awesome stay at this venue.
