Amazing experience. Rooms were clean and decorated stunningly. Food was extraordinary. Family and myself loved every minute. Definitely the best place to stay if visiting in and around Newcastle. Highly recommended.

While Volksrust is not exactly the town to attract tourists, I'd recommend people who are travelling in the neighbourhood to stay/eat at Majuba Lodge, just 5 mins out of town (road to Newcastle - right hand side of the road). The rooms are nicely decorated and clean, all facilities present. The restaurant annex-bar is very well equipped and the food à la carte is delicious and served in (more than) generous portions - try e.g. the porkleg ... . Restaurant/bar are closed on sundays though.

I have to visit Newcastle about once per 6 weeks and stay here because it very central. The rooms are huge with beds for africa. Car port for one car and close to a good pub and eatery. Breakfast good and for most tastes. Will return.

the people are amazing, they have the right staff but with dread full decor, don't know how that happened, the place has potential but requires some one with an eye for taste. Going away for a weakened is not just a physical experience but must also be a treat to all your other senses.

Visisted the place a week ago and i must say everything about the place is just horrible, from the rude staff to the horrible breakfast, to even the rooms that has dirty cupboards. no ironing equpiments in rooms, no fridge in the room, bad looking bedrooms with two large beds in one room. i felt degrated at that place, when i wanted to iron my clothes and had to walk all the way to reception area and made to iron in shady looking place where everyone just walks in, from the receptionist to the general worker. wanted to warm my food and the same procedure applied that i had to walk all the again. the claim to have wi-fi of the signal is even very poor. and oh its the same breakfast everyday, no change of menu. the blankets really look like dog blankets indeed, the is even llice on the beds. WORST PLACE EVER TO VISIT.

Response from Mandy Austin, Owner at Majuba Lodge Newcastle
Responded 28 Jun 2023
A LOT HAS CHANGED SINCE 2015. Sorry for your poor experience. Our staff are polite and welcoming. The rooms are cleaned daily and inspected randomly to ensure hygiene standards are kept constant. Our ironing station is behind reception because customers tend to burn our carpets if we supply irons in the rooms. Every room has a microwave, fridge and wifi. We can't control the signal strength however as Newcastle has massive internet problems in general. Our breakfast menu is a full english breakfast or omlette, however if you want something else all you have to do is ask as we are here to assist our customers. We have lovely warm blankets - not dog blankets and the claim that their is lice in the beds is deflamatory and completely untrue. We would say please come back again and see us now, but given your review you would probably just try to damage our reputation more.

I will never stay here again .
The rooms are old and extremely outdated .
There were bugs everywhere.
Expensive for what you get ..R 700 room only . The Internet doesn't reach the room so not that ideal for business travelers who don't have their own internet.
The only plus side is that it's walking distance to the shops, pub and restaurants

My family and I went to Newcastle for a family reunion and decided to book with Majuba Lodge on the weekend of 18th of Feb 2017, for 2 nights.
We were welcomed by very pleasant, friendly and accommodating staff,( Zowie and later Amanda),the cleaning staff were also very friendly and helpful, and I was very impressed with the chalets.
They were very clean, comfortable and spacious, we were 5 of us and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
They have a lovely pool, which unfortunately, we didn't get to use,due to bad weather.
I would definitely stay here the next time round and would definitely recommend this lodge for families.

But I've also stayed in worse.. Like when I was in the army.
The lodge has a cheap motel feel about it. The floor tiles and the basin in the bathroom are cracked. The floor tiles in the room are chipped. The grouting in the shower is full of mildew.
On the positive side, the room is spacious.
The breakfast was substantial although the steel framed chairs in the dining area gave it an institutional feel.
I would recommend this venue for a one night stop over to get some rest if there was nothing else available in a 200km radius.

I had an excellent stay at this place where you have everything under one roof; a place to sleep, a comfortable covered carport with security and lots more. i would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a nice accommodation within a walkable distance from the mall and restaurants.

My husband stayed for 10 days at this resort, funded by his employers and though I was due to go visit and stay there I never managed to get there but I have grilled him for information to write this review. It is very very peaceful there and the accomodations were really very good indeed.
It really is quite far from anywhere and is mainly used by those touring the battlegrounds as a perfect base.
The grounds are manicured and the bar and restaurant friendly and accomodating. EXCEPT ON SUNDAYS - the entire place is SHUT simple as that - shut! so you will need to make arrangements for your meals and evening entertainment elsewhere if staying here.
It is a popular resort with companies putting up their workers and can be full with just them so booking would be essential just incase.
It was kept immaculately clean and offered an excellent laundry service and picnic lunches made up for you if you tell them the night before.
It is within driving distance of a village (care needed when visiting - especially the bars here) and a couple of medium sized towns.
It is a few hours drive from Rorkes Drift (think Zulu) and that makes it one of the nearest places to stay to visit this site and other battle grounds nearby.
